Nope, Aang killing Admiral Zhao was the first.
There was also Long Feng killing Jet (though offscreen), Aang technically being killed by Azula, and Combustion Man.
The lieutenant also didn't die. He was just knocked unconscious according to the wiki.

God damn that looks good. I'm going to get so many new metalbending tricks for my guy! Using the shoulder armor as blades projectiles and bending liquid metal (t1000 style!) are already being added to the list.
Now I'm thinking Suyin might not be involved and it's a military coup, but we'll see. Then again with Varrick, a freaking third trusted advisor turning evil, she's either villainous or horribly incompetent. Either way, the villain looks awesome. Also it's really cool that Zelda Williams is playing her.
That did indeed look like Zhu Li in the tank. There might be Zaheer in the season. Who knows? They left him alive for a reason I assume.

Just noticed.
Air is described as the element of change. Earth is described as the element of balance.
The baddies for Book 3 and 4 are an Airbender and (apparently) an Earthbender.

Watching Book 2. I completely forgot how normal Unalaq looks and sounds for a guy whose goal is to become the Antichrist.

Yeah I'm assuming they're going to do the polar opposite of anarchism and have Kuvira trying to enforce order through a military state. We shall see. She looks like she might give Azula a run for her money.

That would make a lot of sense, actually. The Metal Clan are the last bastion of Earthbender order.Still, that's not very Red Lotus-like, and Kuvira had the Red Lotus theme playing when she was introduced. So I imagine they have a scheme.

Now that the LSAT is done, I think I might treat myself by watching TLAB and LOK in their entirety.

Point of interest while rewatching: Avatar Roku clearly lavabended as a fire bending move when he destroyed his temple.

Is a shirshu really as powerful as a dragon?

Maybe for tracking purposes. But from a killing your enemy standpoint not so much.

I mean the paralyzingly tongue is handy but when compared to a flying bison or dragon I don't think it matches up. A polar bear dog can track as well. So the tongue might put it more powerful than the polar bear dog but still a level or two under anything that flies.

A shirshu's tracking skills are in a different league from a polar bear dog entirely. You give a shirshu someone's scent and it will find that person no matter where on the planet they are. Literally the only way to avoid the shirshu is to walk through a spirit portal or hitch a ride with a lion turtle. It's a really powerful pet. ...or change your perfume....or roll around in shit....or anything really that effects smell. It might be a better tracker than a polar bear dog but it has substantially more weaknesses to balance it out. Will there be a money system?

I also just realized there's now a villain for each nation. Fire (Ozai) Earth (Kuvira) Water (Unalaq and Amon) and Air (Zaheer).
It also makes me a bit angry that Amon wasn't actually a non-bender because then we'd have the balance of a villain from each nation and a nonbender. Makes you think he might have been right since benders seem to cause more harm than good.

If you count secondary villains, there's Varrick, Hou-Ting, and possibly Long Feng. His earthbending scenes are vague, since he's always surrounded by Dai Li and he never really gestures.

I call an elephant koi as a pet, that me and my polar bear dog will ride around on. He's going to act as a yacht service before long.

In that case I want an unagi.

It makes sense that they have to set a few things in motion before the jump, such as the aftermath of the Eath Queen's death. I assume Kuvira will be attempting to fill the power vacuum. Otherwise the jump would be a bit jarring.
In response to the shirshu: Well from that logic, a fire ferret is overpowered for stealing. The shirshu is the king of its particular niche, but I'd still argue a dragon and bison are far more useful pets. It depends on what you use them for. Harder to tame than a polar bear dog and easier than a dragon or flying bison sounds like the perfect spot for it.
In response to the Amon bit: I disagree. His false persona still came with with a poignant message, it just undermined his cool factor a bit. Which, as I said before ,was probably the point. It do think the writers were being extremely clever, I just would have preferred if he had remained a non-bender for the purpose of balancing the villains. I know plenty of people that loved the revelation of his identity and it's fascinating that the villain in this case was 100% right. The opression of benders may been an actual problem but it wasn't one Amon actually gave a shit about. He just wanted revenge and power. Hitler is the obvious historical example, turning the actual hardship of a people into the impetus for his own meteoric rise. It is absolutely commentary on the "false or dangerous message/misleading propaganda", the issue is I think they sacrificed the story a bit there for the sake of the message. My complaint that there wasn't a non-bender villain when there was one for each nation is actually a fairly petty one because the only reason I don't like it is because it made the big bad "less cool."
