Visenya followed on Elseyris' heels. "Well well well, brother, you have returned to us at last." Her face, as always, was pleasant but her voice dripped with contempt. "You know not the temper of court. Do not intercede or you risk all of us. Yes, brother, even your own hide." She sat down beside her mother, beckoning Elseyris to join them, and looked at her freshly polished nails. They gleamed in the candlelight blood red.

Rhaegar gave a snort of derision at his younger sister's words. "As always, nice to see you too Viseyna. Actually I don't recall asking for your advice. Do not presume to give it, unless I ask you directly." He gave a warning glance to his youngest sister, as he spoke. "I am no fool, sisters. You would both do well to remember that."

Jeyne, trapped in an unhappy life for so long, lost her temper.
"Enough! I will not allow fighting between my children. We are in this together, all of us! We will behave like a family else we will all suffer."

Jeyne, trapped in an unhappy life for so long, lost her temper. "Enough! I will not allow fighting between my children. We are in this together, all of us! We will behave like a family else we will all suffer." "Sorry, Mother. I was merely trying to offer advice, as someone who has been around the relevant people more than Rhaegar has. I'm sure the King will be delighted to receive your presence, brother." She glanced wearily towards Rhaegar, then turned back towards her room; "I'll come join you presently, Visenya, I need to set down my things, and get this mud out of my hair." She strode purposefully to her room, locking the door behind her.

Visenya just smiled when Rhaegar spoke to her so cruelly. The smile never reached her dark violet eyes. "I am sorry, mother. It is just our brother insists on speaking where he has only a surface understanding. And he insists he is no fool, when clearly he knows half of what he thinks. And here he comes, treating his mother and his sisters as though he is in control of them," she sneered, getting to her feet, "when clearly it is the king and the Goldcloaks and gods know who else who are even in charge of his own life. You are no Prince, Rhaegar, and you never have been. Tread carefully in this place." She kissed her mother's cheek then, and would have left the room, but she knew better than to leave her mother all alone with her poisonous brother.

Jeyne smiled a little at her elder daughter.
"You are quite right, my love. I am pleased you understand the situation."
She looked to her son. "Rhaegar, my dear, your sisters have the right of it. You must never forget the danger we live in every day. You must show a humble and grateful presence to the king and his close kin, as I do, as your sistesr do, or I fear you may come to the same end as your father. Do not make me watch Prince Aemon cut off your head."

Rhaegar sighed in exasperation. "You think I do not understand, mother? I understand perfectly well my position here. Over the past three years, there are those who make me aware of it every day."
He looked coldly at his younger sister. "I care little for what you do Visenya. I have understood for some time that I am merely an inconvenience to you. To your ambitions."

Visenya shrugged. "What you call my ambition may very well save the lives of this family, not to mention smooth over our damaged reputations. Maybe it will even land me where our father intended me to be." Now she looked poisonous. "Pray stay out of my way. Things are going rather well for me at this moment."

A small smile curled at the edge of Rhaegar's lips as he leaned back in his seat, and studied his sister for a long moment his violet eyes appraising her.
"It would be my pleasure, Visenya."

Visenya rolled her eyes and stayed near her mother, stroking her long dark hair and no longer watching Rhaegar. He didn't matter, and he never had. That was why Visenya had gone with their father to Dorne, she told herself, because even then people could see her value. Rhaegar was nothing but his father's son, now, and would fail in the same way.

Rhaegar gave a short bark of laughter. "And where was our father intending you to be? As much as you might hate to admit it, I am my father's heir, Visenya and was always going to be. Not you."
He turned to his mother.
"Now mother. Is there anything I can do for you?"

Visenya gave a small smile, turning her head so he could not see. She cared little for her brother's jibes. She carried on stroking her mother's hair, and humming a song she had heard once about someone's mother who was a font of mercy.

Jeyne smiled as her daughter stroked her hair. "Shall I brush your hair, Visenya? As I did when you were little." She looked over at Rhagar. "There is nothing I need, my son. Only to see all my childre as safe as they can be, and not quarreling with one another."

Visenya obligingly sat on the ottoman at her mother's knees and pulled the comb from her long locks. "I would love that, mother." She look she gave Rhaegar as he was dismissed so carelessly by their mother was pure venom.

jeyne began to brush her daughter's hair but as she did so, she watched carefully to see what Rhaegar would do.

Rhaegar gave a small resigned smile. It was nothing more than he expected. He noted Visenya's look of derision. A brief pang of what once was between him and his younger sister briefly coursed through him, but he shook it off. He, unlike his mother, had recognised how poisonous his sister had become. Nowadays she reminded him of little more than a hissing snake, such as might be found in his mother's land of Dorne, in an odd way quite beautiful to look upon, but ready to sink her poisonous fangs into those she perceived as being in the way of her ambitions. Clearly, that is how she had come to regard him. He had done nothing to deserve her derision, except to have been born his father's eldest son.
He stood and gave his mother a small bow of respect.
"Then I shall keep you no longer mother. You have but to ask if you require anything of me."

"I shall." replied Rhaegar. "Farewell mother."
He turned on his heel and without a glance at Visenya, walked out of the room.

Elseyris tapped on her mother's chamber door, and waited with a nervous smile.

Jeyne opened the door, let out a cry and enfolded Elsey in her arms as she let out a cry of sheer relief! She was impeccably groomed, as always, but her hair was loose and she held a brush in her hand.
"Oh my dear! Thank the gods! Was it terrible?"

Elsey returned her mother's embrace, and she felt her eyes well up.
"I'm home, Mother. May I come in?"

"Of course, of course." Jeyne pulled her daughter through the door and closed it behind them. "Tell me about it," she urged.

"Firstly, I want you to know that Rhaegar is alive and well," Elsey said, treading carefully in her news-giving.
She sat down where she and Jeyne could sit side-by-side.
"But, we lost our dragons to the battle. Nenyan and Vermax are gone."
Elsey hung her head sadly.

Jeyne gasped. Though dragons ha been lost before, she had been quite sure she could rely on Nenyan and Vermax to keep her children safe. But now they no longer had their companions and protectors.
"Mother have mercy on us all," she gasped. "Where is your brother now? Has he come home?"

"I have not seen him, he was not on the same ship as I was, but I expect he will have returned by now."
Elsey took her mother's hands;
"I don't want you to be upset, but I do have to be honest with you. I was wounded in the battle, but do not worry, please, it is not much at all."
