She shrugged. "What will happen, will happen, but I think Aemy will be off at war soon enough, and the King might be glad to have an heir planted before his heir goes off to fight again." She smiled, then. "As for that, there is some good in the religion of the Seven. His wife will get him all to herself." "Not the most pious reason to convert, Sister," Elseyris replied with a wink. "The sooner Aemy is away, the better. She hates us and isn't shy of making sure everyone knows it. I hope she suffocates in her own tits."

Visenya snorted in a most unladylike way and reached out to give her sister a one-armed hug. "It would only be poetic justice, the way she flaunts herself, as though she were such a catch."
"Perhaps I should pay a visit to the sept, someday, though it is quite far, and I doubt the King would give me permission to go so very far."

He's allowed to go pretty much anywhere, and the King won't think anything of it, because of his post. Or one of the nicer cousins? I sneaked along there on my own once, but nobody saw me. It's a strange place, but there's a nice old man who lives there."

"I don't think I could sneak anywhere, but you're right. We could ask Lord Darklyn. He has been very kind to us, even when few others have." She picked up the comb again, idly running it through her blond locks.
"I hope you'll come talk with me more often. I enjoy it." She left unsaid the fact that she had almost bitten Elsey's head off not a minute before.

She paused at a thought, her brow furrowed. "Do you think he's actually on our side, or just being kind out of pity?"

Visenya shrugged. "You know the man better than I. My advice would be to trust him, but not with your life. Never give him the full truth, or volunteer too much. But, I'd say the same of everyone at court. Except me. You can always trust me, Elsey."

"We must protect ourselves, and eachother, no matter what. We are tolerated, not accepted."

Rhaegar Targaryen arrived at his mother's rooms. He knocked briefly on the door, before walking in. He looked around for his mother or either of his sisters.

He is allowed admittance. Jeyne smiled at her only son, but, as ever her smile was tinged with the sadness built up from years of fear.
"My dear. What can I do for you?"

"I have not seen you for some time." replied Rhaegar, smiling to cheer his mother up. "It behoves a son to visit his mother every once in a while. Where are my sisters?"

"About their own affairs," Jeyne said with a little shrug. "I am not their jailer, my dear. And they are grown now, I cannot keep them in these rooms all the time, no more than I can you. Even though it is safe here than any place else in this horrid city."

Rhaegar suppressed a smile. "Visenya yes, but Elseyris? However that is your decision." He took a seat beside his mother saying nothing for a moment, before saying conversationally. "You wish to leave Kings Landing, mother? Perhaps return to the home of your father at Yronwood?"

"You know I do," she sighed. "But the king and queen will not give me leave to go. I dare not disobey so long as my children remain at court in thrall to the dragons."

Rhaegar looked puzzled. "I don't understand, mother. My sisters and I are required to stay, because of our blood. But you carry no Targaryen blood and have no claim to the Iron Throne."

Elseyris, returning from training in the yard, sloped in. Her boots (and some of her hair) muddy, her flail slung over her shoulder.
"Mother, Rhaegar," she said, dutifully kissing each of them on the cheek.
Their faces, deeply serious, made her worry that Jeyne had been telling Rhaegar about their earlier emotional conflict. She didn't want him making her feel guilty about leaving too. However, she nevertheless reasoned to meet with their concern. It is the adult thing to do, even if I don't like it.
"Are you...alright?"

"Of course," Jeyne lied with a false smile for her younger daughter. "Rhaegar, the king will not allow me to leave. My presence here compels Father not to offer up any threat to the Iron Throne. Have you forgotten that Yronwood men joined your father's rebellion? So long i remain here, you grandfather dare not take action. Though it's my hope that one day he will be able to smuggle in assistance to help us escape."

After returning his younger sister's greeting, Rhaegar shook his head impatiently at his mother. "My grandfather will not take action against the Iron Throne, with his daughter's children still in King Landing, irrespective of where you yourself are. What would be the point? What could he hope to achieve except our deaths?"

Jeyne shook her head with a little sigh at her son's hopeful obstinancy. "Rhaegar, my sweet, you do not understand these things as I do. If you are so sure the king who has kept us under guard all these years will be so kind as to send me home, perhaps you ought seek his permission? For myself, I am not such a fool as to hope I may be set free."

"I shall do what I can for you, Mother." replied Rhaegar firmly. "You have suffered enough. Needlessly in my view."

"Tell the king that," Rhaella sighed. "I do not believe he will agree with you. Like as not he will tell you it's my fault your father challenged his rein."

"And yet Maegor rules us, as his grandsire did. My son, you will not change him. Please do not be foolish. I could bear to see you die too."
She spoke with genuine fear in her voice.

Rhaegar patted her hand. "When the time is right Mother, I will intercede for you. You need not fear for me."

"You will not stop me fearing for you," she told him. "Now let that be an end to it, if you will. We all live here on sufferance, and I fear the day the king decides we do not deserve to live/"

Elseyris, eavesdropping as she slowly traipsed towards her room, turned to speak to her brother;
"Rhaegar, the King barely entertains the requests of his own son, he's hardly going to do anything for you. He treats his own children with contempt, you're only going to make him angry by approaching him."
