Rhaella produced pen and paper. "Take as long as you need," she urged. "Have some more wine if you like."
She went to the far side of the room, took out Dark Sister and began to oil the blade.

Elseyris stared at the blank paper for a long time, her mind searching frantically for the right words. She knew she would not be permitted to speak her true heart's words, but neither could she bring herself to be cold. Eventually, she took up the pen, and began writing;
Aegon,
I write this with a heavy heart. Life has diverged our paths. Of course, I ought to accept this. Vying for your affection was folly. Evidently, I am unworthy. Your kindness has meant a lot to me though. Out of your leadership came my bravery. Under your command at Oldtown, I became a better soldier, and a better person. Please try not to think ill of me for my softness of heart. Learning this weakness now is better than not at all. Even the greatest among us have their flaws. All will be well, I'm sure, in time. Scars will heal. Even the things that trouble us now shall eventually right themselves, I hope. Do not worry about me. One such as you has far more worthy things with which to contend. Never forget how much I respect and honour you. To be a companion to you was a privilege. Go on with your life in peace. I wish you every happiness. Vhagar bless your future. Each of the Gods smiles upon you. Unchallenged may your reign be. Please keep yourself safe. Over all things, be strong. Now, things may be hard, but I trust it will not always be so. Uphold what is right and you will not falter. Someday, I hope that we will be permitted to speak in person again, but, until such a day comes, I shall not trouble you further.
- Elsey
It was a gargantuan effort to restrain her emotions, to omit the words of love she longed to send him, but she felt sure that would be immediately deemed 'unsuitable'. She set the pen gently aside, and studied the letter for a few moments, before standing up and approaching the Queen, holding it before her like a shield, her expression anxious.

"You are finished then. Very well."
Rhaella put aside her sword, the blade dark and gleaming from her ministrations. She took the letter and read it closely, lingering over some phrases. Sometimes she frowned. But finally she folded the letter and weighed it down with a small golden figure of a three headed dragon.
"It will serve. I will ensure it is delivered to my son the prince. Now, go to your chamber and lie down. We cannot have you becoming unwell. Cry, if you like. Nobody could blame you for that."

"Thank you, Your Grace."
Elsey rose gingerly, and bowed to the Queen, before turning and making her way to the door, stepping out into Trajan's shadow once more.

Maelys stormed through the corridor, ignoring the Kingsguard at his sister door and knocked aggressively.

Ser Jon Gaunt, the knight on duty, gave him a withering look. "My lord, it is not meet for you to approach the Queen thus."
A servant opened the door nonetheless. "My lords? Her Grace is available for visitors."
Ser Jon, scowling, said "Prince Maelys is requested to state his business with the Queen."

"Does my brother pay you to be my sister's secretary, Gaunt?" Maelys barked. "My businesses with her are my own..."
"Tell her it's her brother, darling... Urgent matters." He told the handmaids with all kindness he managed to muster.

Ser Jon remarked "Such haste is unseemly, my lord." But he stood aside, having made his point, and thus the servant showed Maelys in.
Rhaella sat clothed in simple tunic and breeches. She smiled as Maelys approached. "Brother! Welcome. How do you find Oldtown? I hope you found a manse to your satisfaction."

Maelys wanted to explode in rage and roar at Rhaella demanding information about the rumours he had heard. But he couldn't do it to her, she probably had nothing to do with it.
"It's all fine... The kids are loving it." He forced a faint smile. "Though this is not why I came here, dear sister..."
"What is going on?" He sat on her bed, his rage turning into dismay. "What happened to my little girls? You have to know soemthing about it." The prince could feel a knot in his throat.

"Which girls? You mean Aenar's brats?" Rhaella put aside the book she had been reading. "Why do you care so much, Maelys? What are they to you? Their father tried to steal your brother's throne."

"They are not their father... They had nothing to do with it." He protested. "Imagine what it would be to be young and alone in a dragon's nest, where everyone hates you for a crime you had nothing to do with."
"In their time of need, I gave those girls a shelter... Something that no one had the decency to do."

Rhaella frowned. "Mother wanted them killed," she reminded him. "They had bed and board, and a degree of freedom. They even had their dragons. But Elseyris was fool enough to make Aegon fall in love with her. There had to be some penalties for that, since both of them needed to learn they could not be allowed to marry. Truth be told, until that happened, I had no opinion of any of them, good or bad. I allowed them to live in the Red Keep so they could not be used as figureheads for future rebellions nor left to die of starvation. I had no obligation to do more."

"You're right, sister, you did everything you could." Maelys sighed, he had to agree.
"I was a fool to fall for those children, but I did. I held them under my wings for years.... An now this." He had his hands on his face. "Elsie was wrong to get involved with the Prince. But Trajan... That man is a monster... Brother doomed her the day he bethroted them."
"If she's dead..." The Lord of Oldtown swallowed a sob. "I have to see the body, I'll promote an investigation, if the rumors deem true, Inquisitor or not, I'll have that little shit thrown in the darkest cell I find... I swear this by my goldcl..." He reached for his chain of command. Or at least where it should have been.

She reached for the wine glass. "Have a drink, Maelys. Would you be good enough to pour?"
She looked directly at him. "Elseyris is not dead yet. Her wounds are severe, though." She let that hang in the air for a moment. "If she dies, I will ensure you are granted the opportunity to stand vigil over her corpse. As for Trajan, I am disinclined to intervene with him. I love him not - how could I, when he is my husband's bastard - but he is useful to the crown. I do not disagree with you - he was likely harder on the girl than he needed to be - but it would not be wise for you to challenge him in this matter. I have already lost my eldest daughter to his crossbow. Do not let me lose a brother too. Especially now I am short two brothers already." She sighed, thinking of fierce, romantic Valarr, her champion, and dutiful, steadfast Aemon, both lost forever.
"Let's see if the girl survives her injuries before we take action against Trajan."

Maelys poured some water for him and the Queen. Her words were a gust of fresh air, he could now breathe easier.
"Where is she being kept? Is she being well guarded? How many? Goldcloaks? I have to see her."

Rhaella sipped at her water.
"She is in her chambers and too badly injured to give anyone, including Trajan, cause to be concerned about her activities. The guard around hers and her sister's rooms has been doubled." She sighed. "I get no joy from thinking of the girl wed to Trajan, but the King has not seen fit to change his mind. I would be surprised if he does. I feel sorry for the girl, certainly, but I cannot forget that she was a bad influence upon my son, and I see no benefit to myself in persuading the King to call off the marriage."

Maelys nodded, though this te he did not completely agree with her, Elsie wouldn't harm a fly, much less influence the Crown Prince.
"I'll go now... Te next days might turn out be a bit tiresome." He said rising from his seat. "I may even try to talk to my brother about this." Again, Maelys forced a faint smile under his mustache, he did not want to lose Elsie, but to do nothing but grieve would not help her anyway.

Rhaella sighed. "If you value your own skin, you'll do nothing, Maelys. Be kind to the girl, if you wish, be her friend, but don't intervene in this marriage. You have no obligation to do that, and no authority to confront Trajan. Please remember that."

Rhaella sat in her chambers studying a map of the Free Cities, wondering how long her children would be away from home. It felt like they had been gone a long time and she was worrying about them. Aegon and Rhaena had one another, as well as their companions, but Daenya, off in the Summer isles, had only Adara. As a mother, Rhaella couldn't help but worry.

Bertram, having left His nephews in the throne room, passed by the Queen's chambers on his way to his rooms. Seeing the guard standing next to the door he greeted the man,
"Ser! I wish to introduce myself to Her Majesty the Queen if I may. My name is Bertram Targaryen."

Fortunately for Bertram, the queen's door was today guarded by a kngiht of the Kingsguard, Ser Jon Gaunt, who was close to Bertram's own age, and had been a knight of the Kingsguard for a year or so when the prince was sent away. "Prince Bertram," he said, polite but a little shocked. "I always thought you'd never come back. I am sure Her Grace will be happy to see you."

Looking closer at the man after hearing the surprise in his voice Bertram thought he recognized the man. "I know you... Jon right? Jon Gant, no... Gunt?" Bertram smiled after Jon corrected him and they shook hands.
He knocked on the door before entering.

Ser Jon opened the door and called out "Your Grace, it's your uncle, Prince Bertram."
"Send him in," Rhaella called.
Ser Jon ushered Bertram inside. The queen sat at a table poring over her maps, but she looked up smiling as Bertram entered. "Uncle! It's been far too long."

Bertram walked in and greeted his niece with a smile. "You look as beautiful as the day I left!" He then knelt with his fist over his heart, adding "Your Majesty."
Bertram stood up "How have things been in my absence? Your brother appears to have grown hard and cold. Although I suppose the throne will do that to a man."

"So it will," Rhaella agreed. "Maegor has not had much warmth in him for many years. Even in the last years of your father's life, I found that Maegor was often harsh. He does not show his heart often, even to me. You missed our defeat of the Faith Militant, uncle. You grew up with it, the same as Maegor and I did, but you missed most all the fighting. I didn't do much fighting when you were still with us, of course, since I was but a young wife then. But afterwards, we needed every dragon we had. Your arrival is well timed, I think. We lost several dragons in the war. So you will be made welcome for that alone, and I am sure your past...offence, will be forgotten soon enough."
