"The prince told me to deliver it to you so you may take it by ship," Waxley replied and stuck his hands into his sleeves.

Rhaella considered. "I see. Lord Velaryon commands our fleet. I will instruct him to set aside one ship to transport the wildfire . Have it delivered to him at the harbor and make sure your own men oversee the packing. I wish to be certain it is made safe. And when it is done, be sure that the crew of the chosen vessel are made aware of the dangers and given the proper instruction in handling the subjstance.."

Wisdom Waxley nodded to the sound plan. "Yes your Grace, I will put experienced men for the duty, and make sure they instruct the crew about the volatility of the substance if not controlled carefully. I will even assign a man to go along on the journey to make sure proper safety procedure is followed." He bowed his head.

"Good. That is most suitable. We shall speak after this war is concluded. His Grace will be pleased if all goes as we hope. I am sure you will apply to the Master of Coin if there is a need for funds."

Elseyris, her ankle bandaged, the dark, silent shadow of Trajan beside her, limped to the Queen's chambers, and informed the guards of her presence. She leaned against the wall opposite the door as she waited, lifting the foot of the bandaged leg up a little and shifting her weight to the uninjured leg, allowing herself some relief from the pain.

Rhaella's servants allowed the pair to enter. The queen sat within, clothed in a red silk gown. Rhaella's smile did not reach her eyes. She had no love for Aenar's children, nor was she fond of Trajan, especially as she aware of the unfortunate circumstances regarding Aemy.
"What can I do for the two of you?" She asked.

Elseyris turned to Trajan, and asked him to wait outside. When the door was closed again. She returned her gaze to the Queen;
"Your Grace," said Elsey, curtsying. "I am sorry for his presence. I'm sure you are aware that the King made him my sworn shield. That is rather what I had hoped to discuss, if I may."

Rhaella showed no surprise at the situation. She nodded.
"Indeed. Please take a seat. My dear girl, you must understand that it is not proper for you to go about without a guard. I regret it, but your father sealed your fate. And Trajan is so very good at guarding those who need guarding. May I ask what you are hoping to gain from meeting with me?"

"I understand the guarding, I do not seek to dispute that, as uncomfortable as that particular one's presence makes me," said Elseyris, taking the offered seat. "It is more a particular restriction that comes with it that I would ask about."
Elsey took a deep breath;
"As part of this new measure, I have also been forbidden to be in the presence of the Crown Prince, and vice versa, even privately. I wish to ask you, in your mercy, to try and persuade the King to grant some clemency in this detail. I fully understand the need to manage our public proximity, but it just seems to me that forbidding us even to be around eachother in private is unnecessary, given our compliance with everything else that has been demanded of us. I ask you humbly, Your Grace, for this kindness."
Elsey clasped her hands together nervously, her eyes pleading, despite the steadiness of her voice.

Rhaella sipped wine while she listened. She sat very straight, frowning.
"You and my son are lovers, is that not the case? Why then would you expect myself and the king to grant you permission to see my son when he is to marry his sister? Many men have mistresses, Elseyris, but it is impolite for a man to flaunt his mistress before his wife or betrothed. I will not have my daughter dishonoured. So what possible reason other than your own will can you possibly have for justifying your liaison with the prince to continue? It is clear to me that Prince Aegon needs some time apart from you, in order to learn his duties as a husband."

"There is no flaunting involved, Your Grace. What I ask for would be of utmost discretion. I would never seek to dishonour anyone. I will not deny that my request is, in part, because I care for Aegon, but it is also apparent to me that forcing a complete separation has created a dangerous friction between him and his father, and I would hope to assuage it. I know that the King has placed several restrictions on the Prince, in order to ensure compliance, and it is understandable, but I fear that, in restricting Aegon's private life, as well as his public one, he may be inadvertently breeding a volatile resentment that might lead to the Prince acting rashly. If he was permitted the concession of an occasional meeting, I believe that Aegon would be much better disposed to his public duties, and less resistant to the King's expectations."
Elseyris' chest felt almost crushed with anxiety.
"I speak to you of this honestly, Your Grace, and beseech you for this small mercy, in the hope that you value Aegon's happiness as I do, and that you might see that this matter is not worth the risky position it creates."

Rahella sighed and sipped her wine. "I love my son, but I am not blind to his faults. His belief in the false gods must be stopped. Furthermore, even if this liaison with yourself is allowed to continue some day, you can never be anything other than his mistress. It may be that the rules can be relaxed, once Aegon and Rhaena are married. But not before."
She looked Elsey over from head to foot. "Pour yourself a cup of wine."

Elsey numbly poured herself some wine, then cradled the cup nervously between her hands.
"I know that is all I could be, I expect nothing more. If, after they are married, the rules could be relaxed, I would be deeply grateful. Thank you for hearing me, Your Grace."
She glanced fearfully towards the door;
"I greatly fear what may befall me," she said quietly, the angle of her gaze indicating to the Queen that she meant Trajan. "I was told of the awful things that are to be done to me if Aegon displeases the King in any way."

"It seems you are the best possible leverage against any misdemeanor. It is unfortunate, because I have no great desire to see you harmed, regardless of your circumstances. I regret that I cannot extend my protection. I think it will be best to monitor the behaviour of all concerned. Good behaviour might, in time, be rewarded. However, I will urge His Grace that you not be harmed without good cause. I am not my mother, after all. Now, it will be best of you to speak of this to nobody. Do not let the court hear you complaining about your separation from the prince, nor about Trajan. But you may tell me if he does you harm or offers you insult."

"Thank you, Your Grace, for your counsel, and for the offer of your confidence, though I dearly hope it will not be needed. Of course, I would not speak of this to anyone, even if you had not advised it. I have no desire to have people know about what has transpired. Aegon and I are not familiar with eachother in public, so not speaking to one another is unlikely to raise question. However, it is likely to be noticed that I am always followed. What should I say if someone asks?"

"Tell them it is for your own protection, by the king's own command. It is the kind of answer that discourages further questions. Only a fool would dare ask more. "

Elseyris nodded slowly in understanding.
"If I may ask, Your Grace; do you think my betrothal to him is warranted, since he will ever be at my back anyway?"

"Perhaps the one simply precedes the other," Rhaella remarked. "The marriage has not taken place, yet it is clear that you require guarding, so why shouldn't your betrothed do the job? It seems rather simpler than giving you both a guard and a husband." She sighed, sipped her wine. "There was a time when I spoke to the King of marrying you off to some minor lord or landed knight, someone without the power to threaten the crown. But that would require you to live far away from court, out of sight of both the King and Prince Aegon. Is that any better, I wonder? Either way you would be married to a man not of your choosing. You cannot be allowed to remain as the prince's mistress, nor can you be permitted to marry a man of rank, in order that he may use you to threaten the crown when you produce children. Trajan is many things, but he is neither disloyal nor ambitious. His Grace is well aware that any children you bear Trajan will never be permitted to challenge the crown."
And yet Rhaella found she could not quite imagine Trajan and Elseyris conceiving a child, though she could not have said why.

"I have never wanted to threaten the throne. It saddens and frustrates me that I am doomed to never be judged by my own merit alone. I may not have had the chance to serve the Realm for very long, but I served loyally, and without concern for myself, yet I return and find my dedication returned with even more distrust, and a betrothal to a man who, at any point, may simply mutilate me for sport. Aegon was my companion-in-arms and friend before anything else, one of the few people that made my lot bearable, and now I may not even speak to him. I am beginning to feel that this life is no longer better than the alternative."

"If Trajan mutilates you for mere sport, he shall answer to me for it," Rhaella said, very firmly. "I cannot grant your desire, Elseyris, but I am not your enemy, and I have some sympathy for a woman about to begin married life. Sad though it may be, you must live with the consequences of your father's treason, but it is not my intention to see you suffer more than you must."
She sipped her wine and looked hard at Elsey.
"The King and I wish only to protect the realm. Your liaison with the prince may be perceived as a threat. It is for your own good, and Prince Aegon's, that it has been ended. I fear one of you may have come to harm if it were allowed to continue. I regret that you are unhappy with the husband you have been given, but I question what you expect me to do about it - compel the king to change his mind? How would that benefit me, or more importantly, how would it benefit my children? I have to think about the future of their marriage, for the good of the realm. That is my primary concern."

"I understand, Your Grace. I know that there is nothing to be done, I had just hoped that future leniency may have been possible, and I thought that, from some of the things I know about you, that you might understand how it feels to miss someone from whom ill fortune and circumstance has parted you."
Elsey hung her head sadly, feeling utterly foolish for even thinking she could change anything about her awful fate, and even more foolish again for seeking solace from the Queen. But, in truth, she no longer knew who to turn to.
"The last time I saw Aegon, Trajan shot me in the ankle for not leaving the Prince's presence quickly enough. We were not given the chance to say goodbye. May we be allowed to speak just once more, in order to do so?"

"What use will that be?" Rhaella asked. "It will change nothing, and upset you both. I pity you, child. Your tender heart has doomed you to a marriage which is likely to bring you little joy. But as I have said, I cannot show weakness here. So I will allow you to write a letter. If I think it suitable, I will give it to my son. I will also give you some advice. Be humble and obedient and do nothing to draw the king's attention to you. That is the only chance you have of being given a degree of freedom."

"I understand, Your Grace. I will do as you say. Thank you for your counsel."
Elsey was very subdued. She had expected to be refused her request, but was disappointed by that confirmation nonetheless.
"Is there anything you would have of me, Your Grace? Or do you wish me to leave now?"

"It was my intention that you should write the letter now," Rhaella said. "That will be easier, I think. And you would be wise to go lie down afterwards. You look pale."

"As you wish, Your Grace."
Elsey had thought she would have time to calm herself and gather her thoughts, but she did not want to push her luck by making further requests.
