"I am sorry if you think I am lecturing you. I worry about you, my dear. It is my right and my duty to worry about my children. Perhaps you might speak to your father as well, and your sisters, see who suits you best. I don't wish any one of my children to enter into an unhappy marriage."
She drank some more wine.
"I cannot imagine being unhappy with your father. I do not know what would have happened if we did not get along."

"You've only mentioned my sisters, but I have cousins as well," Aegon said thoughtfully, "And of course there are plenty of eligible women amongst the families of the Lords Paramount as well. Of course I want a happy marriage, but I must put what is best for the realm above that if I have to."

"Yes. Of course. I do not say you should cast aside an advantageous marriage for love - that would be most irresponsible -but you should make the match that is both useful to your house and offers the best chance of making you happy. One of your cousins might be suitable, but your sisters would be better."
She looked at him, very seriously. "Please, Aegon, for the love of all the gods, true and false, do not marry your cousin Adara. I could not bear the shame of my successor being the Whore of Blackhaven."

His mother's dire seriousness on that of all matters would have made Aegon smile if their earlier conversation on succession did not still weigh heavily on his mind. "Adara?" Aegon asked. "She's very comely, but I don't know her very well. Nor would I want an unfaithful woman as a wife."

"I should hope not. I fear she has gone too far to get herself another husband now. Don't you fall into her arms." She paused, smiled at him. "I hope you will let me know if you have any worries, my dear."

"Of course," Aegon answered, beginning to get up. "Was there anything else you wanted to talk about?"

"No, that's everything I wanted to say. Just...don't provoke your father, alright? It pains me every time he gives you a dressing down, because I know full well he can be a little harsh. And I don't wish to be torn between my husband and my son."

"I don't try to provoke him," Aegon sighed, "he just seems to find something to criticize in everything I do. Good night, mother." Aegon gave his mother a kiss on the cheek, then left.

Arenya nodded to the guards at her sister's chambers. Feeling no need to say who she was because she knew they had common sense enough to know. "Just open it.. I wish to speak to my sister."

The guards nodded and allowed her to enter. Rhaella looked up from her desk where she sat oiling Dark Sister. The patterns in the steel rippled as she rubbed.
"Sister. Welcome. What can I do for you?"
Rhaella smiled warmly at Arenya. They were not as close as she might have liked but she was still fond of Arenya since both of them shared a desire to fight for their house.

As she entered, Arenya searched for a craft of wine and a goblet,"Your husband, our brother... Has..." Grabbing the craft and pouring,"He is a difficult man, sister."
She turned with a questioning look,"Has he always been this way? Or did he just acquire this persona overnight?"

Rhaella could think of a few times Maegor had been difficult but she didn't want to share that with their sister. "A few times," she said evasively. "But you know how it is. He was raised to be king, and kings have absolute power. It's lucky I'm here to keep his feet on the ground." She laughed a little. "Have you been fighting with him?"

Taking a swig,"Not fighting per say, just disagreeing." She took a seat and took in a breath.
"I asked him if I could be one of his Kingsguard,"she paused to give Rhaella a moment to hear what she had said.

Rhaella's eyes widened. She was herself a warrior queen, of course, so she did not find the notion abhorrent, though it did surprise her. She had not thought her sister thus inclined.
"That is a msot noble goal, I believe. But very surprising. Women are not allowed to be knights under the laws of Westeros. How, then, could you join the Kingsguard, my sister?"

She shook her head,"I don't know, I just thought that he is the King. I want to protect him."
"And yes it is a high honor, but is not why I want the position.", her eyes saddened. "I feel useless in my current state. I fight in the battles but what then after they are over...."
"Become some man's wife, who isn't even a Targaryen?! To spend my as a trophy of some Lord who is proud that he married the King's sister?" Arenya ran her fingers through her hair frustrated. "I am too old to have children. My joys have been watching the my nieces and nephews grow. I don't want any truth be told."
She stared at her,"I don't want a husband, Rhaella. I want to die with a sword in my hand."

"I can understand that. I too hope to die with Dark Sister in my hand. I love my children, though they drive me to distraction sometimes, but we are dragons. The Andal ways are not for us."
She frowned. "I would be happy to help you, but I am not sure how you can join the Kingsguard if you cannot be a knight."

"That is the one bump in the plan", she drank from the goblet, "but he is the King and I do believe I have proven myself as we all have. Should it matter that I am a woman?"

Rhaella swirled her glass as she frowned.
"It should not, but it does. To the Andals, anyway. The Kingsguard are knights, Arenya. To be granted the title of a knight, you must be a man and you must worship the Seven Gods of the Andals. The only other way for a man to become a knight is to be granted the title on the battlefield, for courage. And only a knight may make a knight. That is what the Grand Maester taught me of the customs of the Andals. The knights of the Kingsguard follow the same principles. But...you are right. It is not right that a fit person to protect the king ought be denied the chance to do so because they are not a knight, or because they are female. We both know that women can fight as well as men, if they have the right training. As we do. I shall not stand in your way, of course, but I am not sure it as as simple as we might wish. So...it seems to me we will have to seek a change to the law."

"He suggested that I speak to the Lord Commander... Brandon." She looked at her sister,"I am doubtful, he does not know me. H only knows me as the King 's sister." "I'm going to have to prove myself, my dear sister, not just as a warrior but to make him see me for more than just a woman." Arenya grinned,"and I'm sure I can definitely do that, very well."

And his mother was of the North, not an Andal. He may prove more sympathetic than some." Rhaella considered a moment. "You are right, my sister. We are not Andals. The Kingsguard follows their laws and customs, but we are blood of the dragon. It is fitting that we make the laws. Let us consider the possibility of a new law. One which allows women the same rights of knighthood. So, even if you may not join the Kingsguard - which is not yet certain - perhaps we may create an order of militant women, under my patronage, sworn to the great gods of Valyria."

Arenya placed her hands under her chin,"That should not be a hindrance to what I seek, but it is." "I do not foresee myself having an issue taking his orders or advice. He himself has saved our brother on more than one occasion. it's just that...."

The only problem I see is whether Brandon and Maegor allow this wish of yours to go fulfilled. And if not, as I said, we shall find an answer to suit ourselves. Brandon is blood of the dragon, the same as we are. I do not believe he would refuse you because we are blood kin. If he was jealous of us for being trueborn, I do not believe he would have accepted the white cloak at all."

"Jealousy, is not my concern, sister."
"My concern is whether he will Deem me worthy, whether he will see past the blood of kin and see me as I truly am and understand my intentions. Not just see a woman."
"Not just see a princess."

"You are more than that," Rhaella insisted. "I know it and so do you. Maegor does as well, though he might not admit it. Why shouldn't the Lord Commander? If he objects, remind him of our ancestor Visenya, she who bore Dark Sister before I did. And remind him that his queen is herself a warrior."
She smiled and turned the exposed blade so that its dark steel gleamed. The tip was wickedly sharp.
"Brandon and I are not particularly close, as you know. I doubt he is close to anyone in our family. But he may see sense if you remind him that the women of our house are often worthy warriors."

The protection of Maegor and these lands." She placed the empty goblet down and hugged Rhaella,"I'm done talking about this. The situation is not going to change with me sitting here", she smiled. "I'm going to the White Tower to see the Lord Commander." "I shall bring you news upon my return."
