that explains that then, and that redeems that slightly. But in that vein, fuck Nickelodeon out of all the shows that they have this is probably the one that they should have just ridden out with the budget rather then cutting it short their are plenty of other shows that when compared to Avatar suck that they could have cut funding to.

I am hesitant to agree with this but speaking from a realistic stand point I have to say yes but only because since we are going to be striving for a more dark and gritty avatar universe where death is actually an option, guns make sense for non benders to try and utilize to be on an even par with benders. With that said I don't think we should be going full automatic weapons, but pistols and rifles we should probably be able to get away with. Also I don't want guns being a end all for non-benders cause I think that close combat is more within the realm of avatar universe (even the flamethrowers and chain whips on the war robots are short or medium range not to mention the electric gloves that the equalists and Asami use) so I would like to see that being utilized more then guns.

Honestly I think guns would be too overpowered considering there would be no defense for anyone except the most experienced metalbenders unless you go full stonewall.

Stone walls are a pretty standard defense in most earthbending moves and one of those would probably stop most bullets given that they can also stop giant ass rocks being flung at you. For airbending, just try and dense the air or something to prevent it from moving forward it to get it to stop moving all together (not sure f that would be possible but it's an idea) for water bending just try and catch the bullet with some ice or whatever so that might work well. Fire, incinerate the bullet before it gets to you? Idk

I think if we were to consider using guns, it would need to be done in a deconstructive manner. For example: We know that arrows exist in this world, along with archers. But these ranged combatants were rare, and their skills didn't put them too far at an advantage against skilled benders, but still made them formidable. In that same way, we can look at guns. Guns could be seen as the same as archery, an odd sort of skill and that requires a lot of precision and training((IE a lot of points) to be good at. The defensive measures listed above could protect skilled benders, but not unskilled benders, which also apply to arrows as well, coincidentally. maybe in the avatarverse, since s so many people can use bending for ranged combat, not a lot of focus was put on training regular soldiers to fight at range. The changing times will alter that, beut we shouldn't assume that just because guns exist, it automatically means everyone and everything else is suddenly outmatched. Rather, firearms themselves are just a tool to be calculated same as archery , at least that's my personal take on it.

I don't think we should add anything that hasn't been introduced by the end of the series. I mean, we have all these crazy technological advances already. Why add guns into the mix as well?
I can't actually see them being very useful. Against a metalbender they'd be a liability (unless you were using platinum bullets) and there's really no point to them when the majority of armies are still comprised of benders. Even the "cannons" we've seen require some form of bending. When you have giant robots to combat benders with flamethrowers and lightning cannons, what would be the point of guns? This just doesn't seem like a world that would invent them as there was little industrial drive to do so.
I don't think they exist in the avatar world for a good reason.

Started watching Korra. Some initial impressions: - The animators and artists have upped their game. Everything looks just a bit smoother and more detailed.
- I conditioned my expectations on Korra, but I've enjoyed the start -- obviously I am not as invested in the characters yet, but it seems like they're setting up some interesting story hooks and it is moving at a good pace.
- Amon is quite interesting. I like how the primary antagonist seems to be setting up a populist revolt rather than a military invasion -- that's a cool and complex angle that Aang never really had to deal with. Pimp mask, too.
- The setting is really cool! It's very distinct from TLA, but also a logical continuation. I could totally see how the reconciliation of the nations could lead to a sort of melting pot, with the Fire Nation's industrialization meeting the Earth Kingdom's mass construction (and Toph's metalbending?) to create all these new technologies relatively quickly. Seeing cars in Avatar is gonna take some getting used to, though.
Also just a weird thought: why is it that Toph's family seems to be the only family in the entire Avatar universe that has a last name?

Characters: Having just finished episode six (the one that ends with the awesome fight in the stadium after the pro-bending tournament) I can say that steely, gruff, cable slinging Lin Beifong is indeed great. Tenzin is also great, as are his kids. I'm liking Korra quite a bit too. Mako and Bolin do not seem all that developed so far, basically being Serious Brother and Goofy Brother, but they're alright. Old-Timey Radio Guy is fantastic.
Names: The noble thing makes sense, except I'm pretty sure we've seen nobles without last names. Oh, and it occurs to me that this car industrialist guy and his daughter have a last name despite apparently starting out poor so... who knows. It probably is just inconsistent.
And yes I noticed both statues.

Spoilers without access to whiting them out:
I just love how everything is handed to korra, and she still fucks everything up until it's tied with a pretty little bow on top of a silver platter full of "you are God. Now act like it."

I really enjoyed Season 1 of Korra! It's a shorter season than the ATLA ones, but I don't think that was to its detriment, because it was much tighter paced as a result. I can see how it could annoy if your favorite episodes were the silly, filler-ish ones from the previous series, but I always enjoyed the plot-based ones more and that is what S1 of Korra seemed to focus on.
The antagonists in this were legitimately menacing. Amon & Co. always seemed to have the upper hand, which gave a tense undercurrent to the whole season. He's not the best characterized villain so far, but he definitely felt like the most dangerous and frightening one.
I may even like Korra more than Aang. Her friends, not so much, but her teachers are great. It took me until now to look at the credits long enough to realize Tenzin is played by J.K. Simmons, but that is awesome.

I also never realized that was J.K. Simmon, so I just went through to see what other familiar actors voiced these characters. There are a lot! Mako is played by freaking Bud Bundy! Daniel Dae Kim was Asami's dad. Speaking of dads, Korra and Dexter have the same one. The list goes on. I also just realized that Jason fucking Isaac played Zhao!

Episode recap: TTOOOPPPHHHHH!!!!
But in seriousness, I enjoyed this episode I think mainly in part that Kora was hardly in it. Though the president of Republic City seems like a dick, we need to get him out of here and bring back the council of elders rather then a single upstart. I am somewhat disappointed in not having a fighting Toph back though I can see why they are doing it so the old team doesn't come in and solve problems that Kora's team is supposed to be doing (In relation to Zuko being replaced with his daughter, and Katara not taking a role in the civil war which we get the reasoning for.) With that said, I still think Toph could bend Kuvira over and spank her like a little girl even in her old age.

1. I think everyone and their mother knew that Zhu Li was still loyal to Varrick and playing Kuvira.
2. I love that rather than a nuke, Kuvira's superweapon is basically an American Civil War era rail gun combined with WW1 artillery. Keeps with the late 19th century Meiji Restoration feel and industrial development in Japan during the 1870s. The Ironman suits might change that, but for now I'm pleased with the late 19th to early 20th century tech they're going with. Very steampunk meets Asian mysticism.
3. The fight between Kuvira and Lin was amazing!

Once again thinking that Zhu Li ever "appeared to sincerely join Kuvira" is adorable. Even bro saw through that one.

Pretty pleased with the finale, though it's not quite as... 'final' as I expected.
Will wait for Aranya to post her summary/review first while I rewatch it.

Okay, I have a confession. I'm a sucker for mecha anime. Gundam, Macross, Patlabor, Gurren Lagann, RahXephon, etc. So the idea of duels in robotic armor in Avatar gets me pretty psyched for the RP to start!

Have you considered a secondary admin?

I'm willing to wait until we have a full time admin, just because starting before the admin is ready has ended badly in the past. You could open up character creation though. That'd give those waiting something to do.

Anytime! And also, without you to flesh out our 'modern' setting, we won't really know what kind of world we're living in anyway. So we'd need to wait anyway. Also, did we ever pick out a functional system? I know I devised one, but I don't recall if anyone else had their own ideas.

Final questions:
1. Whatever happened to Vaatu? Is he still floating inside Raava? Is he conscious?
2. The Fire Nation is now the last remaining major military power, after the Water Tribe Civil War, Republic City's military being wiped out, and the Earth Kingdom/Empire being broken up. Zuko and Izumi have no interest in flexingtheir muscles, but what about the next Fire Lord? We also never see what their armed forces look like, and they're supposedly the pinnacle of industry.
3. Whatever happened to the Red Lotus? Zaheer has free reign of the spirit world, so he can easily orchestrate all kinds of schenanigans. I liked Zaheer's episode, but still, what happened to the rest of the group?
4. The idea that you get weaker as you get older bugs me, considering the White Lotus wipe the floor with the Fire Nation in Sozin's Comet.
5. What the hell was up with Evil Korra? Spirits could see her, so clearly she existed outside Korra's head. Also, if she didn't exist, the fight scene in the second episode makes no sense. I kind of think either they left out a scene, or they meant to continue with this, or perhaps they just changed their minds.
