After hearing her mother was back, Princess Rhaena approached her mother's tent. She had bad news to share and was hoping to catch her mother alone, if possible.

The guard showed Rhaena in at once. Rhaella had taken off her full armour and was now in her riding leathers alone. She embraced her daughter with a fierce hug.
"Thank Meraxes!" She cried. "I was so worried about you!"

Rhaena did not often return her mother's hugs, though she never shied away from them either, but this one she did, gripping her back tightly too.
"Nice to see you had such faith in me, mother," she said, and took a step back, but winced as it stretched out her now bandaged thigh.
"It is good to see you well mother,"

"Thank you," Rhaella said with feeling. She had noticed the limp. "Are you injured, Rhaena? I spoke with your brothers when I first arrived. I hear that Maekar saved one of you girls?"
She could not quite bring herself to mention Aemy or Valarr, not yet.

"Yes, he lost his eye saving my life, Tyraxes got caught by the Faith's harpoon, and he and Cyrax got injured shielding me from the ballistaes that would have most likely torn straight through him, and me." she said, nodding, uncomfortable talking about maekar with her mother, "I hurt my leg when the Dragonbane threw a sword at it, but Glutton ate him with several of my arrows buried in him for the offence."

"I shall have to thank him, some day," Rhaella said, though distantly, because her thoughts were still on Aemy. "But your safety is what matters most. Is Daenya well? I haven't seen her yet?"

"You do not need to thank him, in truth he should not have done it, but I am not surprised that he did," she said, it had been why she had not wanted to be on a wing with him, "The Dragonbane broke her arm at the elbow, upwards," she went on, speaking about Deanya, "but she fought very bravely, you would have been proud."

Rhaella winced. "I will speak to your sister when I can. I hope you is being looked after."
She paused, seated herself and gestured Rhaena to do so.
"Why should Maekar not have given you aid? Your are his own sister and the king's trueborn daughter. I should have thought it was his duty to save your life at the risk of his own."

Rhaena remained standing for a second and then sat opposite her mother.
"I am under no illusion as to who has the strongest dragon. The main priority was winning the war, not saving the life of one princess who gets herself into trouble. Cyrax was far more valuable to the cause than Tyraxes. Maekar knows that, I told him that, but he did it anyway," she said with an elegant shrug. "Aid is one thing, I would have expected anyone to give me aid in that situation, but Maekar nearly got him and his dragon killed."

"His duty is to his lord's daughter," Rhaella insisted. "Maekar knows that, even if you do not. You cannot shield him from his duties, child. And the war is saved, and so are you, so no matter now." She leaned in close. "Rhaena, you do know that this youthful passion cannot last?"

"Youthful passion?" she questioned, "I hope you are not accusing me of being foolhardy and warmongering, mother, I took the battle very seriously,"

"I know you did," Rhaella sighed. "Else you would not have..." But no, she could not speak of Valarr yet.
"I meant Maekar. Do you love him? Or is it simply about satisfying your body?"

"In all honesty I haven't thought about whether or not I love him, which perhaps shows that I do not, else I would have classified it," she commented, evenly, afraid this would one day come up, "What I have with Maekar is something born mostly of circumstance, though I will not say it is just that, he's a fine man, and he is good to me, he nearly died for me, and as ungrateful as I am I can still find fault with even that."
She paused for a second and then looked seriously at Rhaella, "Would there be a problem if I did love him?"

Rhaella sighed. "You know there is. Aegon is expected to marry one of his sisters, and you are more suited to the role than Daenya. Aegon is not likely to want to share his wife with another man, and I cannot believe Maekar would wish to share your affections either. I am sorry for it, but that is the way of the world. Your uncle always loved me, but he could never have me. He was still a boy when I was promised to your father."

"If I am forced into marrying Aegon I shall sleep with whomever I want whenever I want," Rhaena commented, slightly indignant, "That was almost something I expected one of those meek westeros girls to say, mother. Aegon can lay with whoever he likes, and so can I,"

"I don't believe that Aegon would wish to lay with anyone other than his own wife. You know how he believes those silly Andal customs."
Rhaella sighed, though she felt a pang of regret that Maegor had never wanted to be faithful to her. She tried not to resent his other women but it wasn't always easy.
"You misunderstand me, Rhaena. I did not mean that I believed you should not lay with the man of your choice, only that your brother would surely take it amiss. Your father would not care if I took another lover, but his are the gods of Valyria. Aegon's gods say that a married couple should lay only with one another. and I still believe that Maekar would not willingly share you. And yet it is clear that of my daughters you are the best fit to sit beside your brother as queen."

"You speak of me as if I am theirs to covet, mother, I am not Maekar's possession to share, nor Aegons. Since when would his false gods be more important than our own, so dictate unto me what I should do? If Aegon has a problem with it, it is just that, his problem. Besides, Aegon killed the Dragonbane, does that not mean he gets to choose his own wife? I doubt be shall choose me."
She paused for a moment, collecting herself in her frustration, less it get the better of her.

"Glutton killed him, not Aegon," Rhaella said. "I don't believe a dragon desires a bride. Sweetling, I don't want your brother's gods to rise to power again. Not now and not ever. But if you married him, you could turn his mind back to the true gods. But it will take time to make your brother change his mind. He will not do it for me, or for your father. But perhaps he might, for his wife. And we have certain customs in this land."
She leaned close. "Rhaena, even if you do not care what Aegon thinks, do you truly think your brother will be allowed to succeed your father if he refuses to forsake his false gods? You are next in line for the throne."

"Glutton killed him for Aegon so that hardly mat-" she started to protest until she heard what else her mother had to say, "He cannot, unless he wants the land plunged into civil war, if he passes over Aegon, married to him or not," Rhaena told her mother, "that isn't true."

But Rhaella looked at her daughter with a sad expression with a hint of steel behind it.
"Your father will never consent to leave the realm in the hands of an heir who follows the Seven. He hates the false gods as much as I do. Maybe even more. I am certain that Aegon must bow to your father's wishes if he wishes to keep his place as heir. But he will not listen to me."

"Have you told him that?" she asked, frowning.

"Not entirely, though I have certainly urged him to change his mind, and implied the dangers he will face if he continues in his beliefs. I love all my children but I cannot, and will not, live in a world in which the Seven are allowed to replace the true gods.
She sighed and put her hand on Rhaena's shoulder. "If Aegon will not bend, the duty may fall to you to see that all we have worked for does not go to waste."

Rhaena had to agree with her mother, she would leave the Seven Kingdoms before it happened, "I do not want to be anyone's queen, let alone my own queen," she said, quietly, she already knew her mother would know she'd do her duty no matter what, "I want to live my own life."

Rhaella's eyes narrowed as she thought about her daughter's comment.
"I know. I was the same, when I was young. Grandfather wouldn't let me fight much when I was your age. I trained in swordplay and I learned strategy at the Painted Table when I was a girl but I was only allowed to be a scout for years, despite the severity of the war. I didn't get to be the warrior I'd always wanted to be until I was older than you and had children of my own. Your father and I have given you freedoms tat my grandfather denied me. I think you will find it much easier to lead your own life than I did, even if you did become queen."
She stood, hands unconsciously going to the comfort of Dark Sister's hilt.
"Rhaena, the Faith Militant were our enemies for decades. Our family's war against them raged before I was born. They killed my father and his brother and several of our dragons. And they killed my brother. There is nothing any man can say that will convince me the Seven are benevolent gods who deserve our worship. I don't wish any harm to come to Aegon, but I cannot imagine that your father will sit easily knowing his heir apparent worships false gods who have caused us so much trouble."
