"But... what about Daenya?" she asked, knowing the answer already, "she follows the true gods," Rhaena knew it'd go nowhere, and her face lost all frown in a look of resignation.
"I understand mother, and of course, if it comes to it, I'll do what I have to."

"I now you will." Rhaella gave her daughter a sad smile. "Do not speak of this to anyone. Certainly not either of your brothers. Though if you can persuade Aegon to turn away from his false gods I suppose it matters less which sister he marries. In the meantime...well, I suppose it does not much matter what you do. So long as you are careful."

You can rest assured no one will ever hear of this from me, mother," she would be a fool to tell anyone, it felt like such a shame, with her and aegon starting to get on better, but maybe that could be her key to preventing it, "How did your battle fare? Well I assume, you do not look injured.

"I was not, but Redwyne's fleet was too strong for us, and he had ballistae to harm the dragons. None died but Seaskimmer and Sinner were injured. The worst of it is that Lord Velaryon is dead," Rhaella said. "I gave him a pyre, poor man."

"You fared both better and worse than us then?" She asked though it was rhetorical. Though she was rather perturbed by the the lack of victory, they had sacrificed several dragons and many men to win at Oldtown, and now the war was not truly over. It was not her place to comment,
"It is a great shame about Lord Velaryon though, lady Daenerys will no doubt be very upset, I should see her soon." She was sad about the loss on her friends behalf, she had all but grown up with Dany, but hardly knew her father.
"What is being done about the arbor? Are we to all go and bring him fire and blood next?"

"If he is fool enough to give us trouble, yes. Aegon has gone to demand Redwyne's surrender. He cannot hope to stand alone. We'll destroy him if we must but it may be that he can be convinced that peace is a better choice."

Rhaena nodded, not really bothered about the Arbor until she had to be.
"All of the Archmaesters are dead. I had their heads removed anyway, I don't know if you want them leaving here or taking back to kings landing, but they were the ones who developed the explosives that..." She said, but didn't want to mention Valarr by name, "that gave us so much trouble."

Rhaella understood. Her stomach clenched in renewed pain but Rhaena's actions pleased her nonetheless. She would have liked to take the heads back, but the thought of travelling with them did not please her. And they would surely stink, too.
"Have the heads tarred and placed on the city walls as a warning to all who would defy the dragon. Grand Maester Benedict once told me the Archmaesters each bear a rod, a ring and a mask of the metal assigned to the craft in which they excel. Have those objects been salvaged? They might be of value to us, as trophies if noting else."

"I have already had them put on the walls, I only asked in case you did want to take them with you," she informed Rhaella, with a nod, " and the one I decapitated myself had the mask still on when the Maester lost his head," Rhaena commented, "So perhaps they still have them on, but regardless, I am going to have to go to the citadel anyway, for some reasons, and I can take a look for them on the walls and in the conclave on my way, if you would like?"

"Please do," Rhaella answered. "Anything that can be sold or melted down is of use to us. Did your grandmother ask you to go to the Citadel? She has been grumbling about our inability to use the Citadel's library for as long as I can remember. So has the Grand Maester. We will need to ensure that someone trustworthy is given charge of the Citadel, someone who shall report to your uncle Aemon, who is to be Lord of Oldtown."

"Does Aemon want to be Lord of Oldtown?" she asked, genuinely surprised if that were the case.

Rhaella smiled. "Aemon has waited many years to be granted a title. I know he will appreciate the honour, for his son if not for himself. We need Oldtown in the hands of someone we trust, and who better than your Uncle Aemon?"

"I do not think him incapable, but... would he want Oldtown? His Dragon died reducing the city to rubble, he nearly died also, and Oldtown has lost so much of what made it great, the citadel, the Hightower, to an extent even the Starry Sept." She suggested, she thought he should at least be consulted.

"Rhaena, the decision is not yours to make," Rhaella sighed. "It was agreed in my conference with your brothers. Aemon deserves the honour. He may raise a monument to Azuria for all I care, but we need a firm hand here. Aemon will provide that."

"I am not making a decision," she said, concerned her mother had misinterpreted her, "Surely I am allowed to give my opinion, it will be ignored anyway," she said and then frowned, "So, Maekar's voice carries more weight than mine? That is good to know," she replied with a half smile, thinking there were plenty of firm hands that could do it.

Rhaella sighed. "Your father gave your brothers the command. That is simply the way of it. But it is likely that you will begin to be included in such matters in future. I shall recommend it, of course. But the decision regarding Oldtown has already been made. Do you not believe your uncle deserves the honour?"

"Yes, but it is perhaps not an honour he wants," she said, sighing herself now, as she'd already said she thought him more than worthy of it.

"We don't always get what we want. I know Aemon will do well, Rhaena. It is time he had lands of his own, and his son needs an inheritance. Besides, he'll have Baelon to help him, when he marries Lady Cuy."

"So many marriages, and changes," she said with a sigh, she'd never want the war to continue, but there was a certain social simplicity to it, "I am sure you know best mother. As usual"

"Don't give me that tone," Rhaella scolded, though she laughed somewhat tiredly, and without true humour. "Change is the way of the world. We have to rebuild the mess that was made of this realm."

"Perhaps what this place needs is radical change, we should burn all the septs in the realm," she said, with. Shrug, she would like to, but knew it would never happen.

"I wish that it were possible, but so many of our lords bannermen follow the Seven. We cannot take their gods away from them without risking another rebellion, and that one we probably couldn't win, especially now. So we must let them be," Rhaella sighed. "I pray that in time our descendants can sway the lords to follow the true gods."
She left the final thought unsaid. That would never happen if Aegon sat the throne.

"I may have an idea that could help with such... swaying," she commented, looking sideways at her mother, with a grin that turned wicked, "But I should discuss it with Father,"

"I would like to hear it too," Rhaella answered. "So you may tell me now, if you wish, unless you prefer to tell us together."

"I shall tell you that it would be a work in progress, that could potentially work in the far future," she said, not usually one for slow measures, "It has to do with slowly reassigning the Septs purpose, taking it less and less away from worship and more towards helping the poor in the name of His Grace. Most towns have a sept as a common building, it would not be a stretch to have the buildings temporarily reassigned as something like a poor house, where grain can be given out, The King looks generous, the sept gets viewed as less of a holy place. Most peasants only really care about where their food comes from." She said, and then felt the need to clarify, "If you turned a library into a brothel temporarily, but never reverted it back, it would not take long to forget it was a library at all."
