Shells is small fishing village on the northeast coast of Dragonstone. Sometimes the nobles visit the hamlet to bathe in sea-water for the sake of their well-being. Shells is one of three villages under the banner of a local landed knight, named Ser Cole Bass of Horn Hall. Horn Hall is a towerhouse on the coast, almost as old as Dragonstone Castle but far more modest. The stone walls are dusted white, thanks to centuries of salt spray from the Narrow Sea. Ser Cole's arms fly from the towerhouse - three red drums on a yellow field. The red drums number three to represent the three villages, and the red drums themselves represent the expensive red drum fish, a saltwater fish that breeds in abundance in the waters that Ser Cole's villages controls. The red drum fish is the bread and butter of the Coles of Horn Hall, and had been for centuries.
Their local claim to fame, however, is their association with the Ghost. The village of Shells is the origin of the Queen of Shells, the first rider of Aegerys. There is a statue of her in the village square, a stout, buxom woman past forty with her hair wound up in a braid, her rough-hewn mace raised in one hand. The Ghost has always been very fond of eating red drum and in his feral days was often sighted on the coastline. In the past, Ser Cole was torn between hoping one of his sons would tame the dragon, and being annoyed that the dragon was eating his precious, expensive fish. The villagers hold the dragon in almost superstitious awe, however, and even Ser Cole knew that House Bass was increased in honor and importance by his distant association with the reclusive ivory dragon.

The Ghost flew up the coast of Dragonstone until the village of Shells came in sight. Vira ordered him to land far enough from the cottages and stone huts so as to not to alarm the fisherfolk. She knew she was visible to them, and Shells would learn that Aegerys had a rider again.

Not very surprisingly, the dragon's appearance caused an outcry among the peasants who spotted them. Vira thought she heard someone praise the gods and someone else say the Queen of Shells had come again.

"Do not be alarmed!" Vira said, sliding down from Aegerys' back with a slight wince. His scales were not meant for sliding down - she could not wait to get a saddle. "I am Vira, the new rider of Aegerys, but I have not forgotten the Queen of Shells, or this village. I have come here to offer my services to you, before I return to King's Landing to serve the King." She paused to let that sink in. Not many dragonriders would put a humble fishing village on Dragonstone before service to the King in King's Landing. The villagers would understand the significance of that gesture.
"Where is the steward?" she asked. She did not know how things worked on Dragonstone, but back in the crownlands, each village had a steward who represented the lord in the village. "Or the reeve?" she tried. The reeve would be under the control of the steward, but would be more involved in managing the village's affairs. "Perhaps they can tell me how I can be of service to Shells."

The villagers looked at one another, murmuring, before one man spoke up.
"Ser Cole's steward lives at Horn Hall with Ser Cole. If you wants the village reeve you need to go to the house with the blue door. He's kin to Queen o' Shells, they say. Dunno if that's true though."

"I'll see the reeve, then," Vira said with a smile, and she strode off in the direction of the house with the blue door. By the time she would reach it the reeve would have noticed what was going on, she knew. Nevertheless, she knocked smartly on the blue door.

A neat woman in a grey dress greeted her with narrow, suspicious eyes. "What you want? Come to see the master, have you?"

"I am Vira, rider of the Ghost," Vira said. "And dragonseed. Is the reeve inside?"

"Aye. At the table though, so you'll have to wait. Nobody disturbs him when he's eating."
The woman was distinctly unfriendly and showed no great willingness to let Vira enter, though she did not dare say no.

OOC: Crap, and I decided not to create a Charm or Persuasion skill. Seduction it is! Actually never mind, I will use none of my skills.
Vira sized up the woman quickly. She was like any number of other well-meaning, superstitious, good-hearted women that Vira had known growing up. Lower Crinkley was not all that different from Shells after all, it seemed. This woman was likely the reeve's housekeeper, who lived in a fastidiously neat cottage behind his house and prided herself in knowing her place - and everyone else's.
"By the Crone, t'reeve is lucky to have you to see to him, goodwoman," Vira said warmly, with a friendly smile, lapsing full-blown into the peasant mannerisms she had grown up with. "My mother always said a man was always happiest when filling his belly, and it's a shame to interrupt him. But mayhaps he'd like the company of a dragonrider." Vira sniffed. "I can smell bread. What dough did you use? I was quite the expert baker back in Lower Crinkley, I'd love to show you how I make a loaf."

OOC = you don't have to roll for everything "Why would I need to see how you make bread?" The woman snapped. "Reeve likes my own bread best. Use wheaten dough, 'tis good. You can come sit in the kitchen if you want and I'll let you know when reeve is finished. Likes to sit with a tankard of ale after eating. Might see you then."

"Thank you, goodwoman, that will suit me fine," Vira said.

OOC = nobody WANTS to be a peasant Thankfully you are also dragonseed so a little less docility works well enough! She was shown into a warm kitchen where the smell of bread baking made her hungry. A young girl was busy peeling vegetables. The housekeeper, meanwhile, poured Vira a tankard of weak ale. "What you want here anyway?"

The smell of food made Vira realize that she had had nothing to eat since about an hour before she tame Aegerys that morning. She took the tankard gratefully, but knew her head would spin if she drank it without eating something first, weak as the ale was. "I'm here to offer my services to your village, goodwoman, in honor of the Queen of Shells," she said. "I can see to the baking and peeling you know. Your girl there is a dear, but she's slow. My mother taught me to be quick and efficient in the kitchen."

"Fine, you peel and chop the vegetables and the girl can clean the pans," the woman said. "You're not touching my pies."
She busied herself shaping the pastry cases.
"Queen o' Shells. Reeve's wife be one o' her daughters, they say. I never liked the woman." Her pursed lips indicated some sort of personal issue; Vira noted that the woman was old enough to have known the Queen of Shells personally.

"Didn't she have fifteen children?" Vira asked, chopping and peeling with quick, nimble fingers. "I say, these do look good. Are you going to steam them?" she asked.

"Might have been fifteen. Not sure as I know. Was an awful lot. All I know is she took the man I wanted," the woman grumbled. "Aye, I'll be steaming them sure enough. I'll fill with honeyed apples."

Vira's stomach rumbled at the mention of honeyed apples, but snapped to attention at what the woman said. "I am sorry," she said sympathetically. "When people become heroic figures, we forget that they are just as flawed as the rest of us are. But maybe she did you a favor? Maybe he was as dumb as an aurochs' ass. I'm done chopping these, where do you want them?"

"Don;t matter," the housekeeper said. "I wanted him, but she got him. Bitch. And she got a dragon too. Nothing left for the rest of us."
She gestured towards the pot, where a huge chunk of beef was being boiled. "Toss them in there. Expect reeve will be done soon. I'll go find out if you want."

The smell of beef was torture, but Vira added the vegetables as commanded. "Well, she also got three arrows through her eye, heart and stomach at the end," Vira said cheerfully. "And here you still are. All balances out."

"She had a husband and many children. I never married nor had no children," the housekeeper grumbled. "Wait there. I'll go speak to reeve."
When the woman headed out of the kitchen, Vira was left alone with the maid, who seemed to brighten once the housekeeper had departed.
"Ugh! I hate scrubbing!" She cried. "You really got a dragon?"

"Best to do it with a dry dust mop, my girl," Vira said, who had always been very efficient at cleaning her parents' house. "Good thing about stone floors like this one is that they endure a lot, though." Though those days are behind me forever, Vira thought to herself. If I hadn't gotten Aegerys, I'd still be mopping floors.
"I can show you Aegerys if you like," she said. "Gods, that smells good. Is there a bit of bread and cheese I could scarf down before that bitter old crone comes back? I'm half-starved."

"Course. Bread's a bit stale but it will serve," the girl said, indicating the end of a loaf of bread.
She brought out a pat of butter and a wedge of sharp white cheese.
They could hear the woman's footsteps as she made her way away from the kitchen.

"You're a gem," Vira said gratefully, buttering the bread and layering on the cheese. She could hear the woman's footsteps. Damn! But Vira would be damned before she was denied a bit of bread and cheese, even to speak to the reeve. Just looking at the bread and the white cheese smoothened over it made her mouth water. It had been so long since she had eaten, and growing up the way she had, Vira never denied herself a meal, even if it was table scraps.
"Tell her I had to pop out back to relieve myself," she told the girl, and she disappeared out the back door, and found a clump of bushes to crouch behind - ostensibly to tinkle, but in reality to eat as fast as she could.

The woman was already back in the kitchen by the time Vira came back.
"Reeve will see you now," she announced. "Follow me."
She led the girl to a comfortable room whose only concession to ornamentation was a Myrish rug that had probably cost the reeve's annual income. The reeve himself was a big man with a friendly smile. "Greetings. I hear you are a dragonseed, who has tamed Aegerys?"
