"Good morrow," Vira said heartily. "Yes, I tamed Aegerys this morning. Your housekeeper was just telling me that the Queen of Shells was your good-mother."

"She was," he agreed. "I am blessed indeed. It is good to know the dragon has a rider again. It has been many moons since I saw his white wings here. It is...good of you to pay your respects to the town."

"One day you shall have to tell me stories about my predecessor," Vira said genially. "But for now, I am most interested in how I can make myself of use to Shells. I have heard rumors of fish thieves in your waters. Is that true?"

"Aye, it is. Perils of living in a fishing town. Our fishermen are given permits to fish in these waters, because of the red drum fish, but there's always some who do it illegally. Some are likely newcomers, perhaps deserters. Gives our own fishermen some problems," he sighed. "Fewer fish to be sold at market, less money for all of us."

Vira shook her head. "And when winter comes there will be even fewer of the red drum fish. Do these fishermen come from neighboring villages, do you know? Or is it more of a large scale pirating operation?"

"I believe it is smaller because they sneak in quietly amongst our own men and Ser Cole lacks the men to check the permits, though we have heard reports that sometimes they beat our own men and steal their permits too."

"They must be from other villages then," she mused. "I am sure you know all the fishermen in Shells, reeve. Do you know of any who had their permits stolen?"

"A few, aye. Wat Fishface for sure, and Tiny Tom as well." He gave her direction to their huts and also to the tavern where they were likely to be found.

Vira thanks the reeve and debated whether to go to the tavern, the only one in the village, or to the fishermen's huts. She decided on the huts, and visited Wat Fishface first.

Fishface's hut was a one room hovel and stank so badly of fish that Vira almost gagged at first. A group of children were huddled around a fat matron and an ugly man who could only be Fishface sat mending a net in the corner.
"Who're you?" He demanded, looking up at her with a lusty expression.

"The rider of the Ghost," Vira replied, without wasting time. "And someone who wishes to help you. I've been speaking with the reeve. I heard your fishing permit was robbed from you? Can you describe the men who did it?"

"Just men. Rough sorts with beards. Course, I were drunk at the time," he boasted. "Couldn't stop 'em. But I never saw them afore in my life. Not from this village, they weren't."

"Can you describe them at all?" she asked. "Do you remember where they stopped you? Was it at the docks? At the tavern?"

"Tavern. I had an ale or five and I were getting a bit...y'know. And they set upon me and stole my permit."
He shrugged. "Reeve gave me another so it don't matter."

"Aye. He's me mate. Got us both at same time. He's not tiny, neither. Biggest man I ever see in me life. Near seven foot. But they got him anyhow. Was a lot of 'em. Five or six. I dunno. Maybe more. I can only count to ten. Only got ten fingers."

Vira told herself that this was one aspect of village life that she would not miss. "I can't count past my fingers either," she lied sweetly. "Thank you, goodman."
She turned and left the hut, making her way to the small wooden tavern. It had likely stood in the town for centuries, humble as it was, it's roof blackened with the smoke of a thousand fires. There was a fire roaring at the hearth when she went in. She pulled her hood up so that her face would be less visible, took a table in the corner, ordered mussels steamed in beer and a cup of well water. She planned to enjoy the fresh food, and wait for night to fall, which she judged would happen quite shortly.

The food was plain but good. She saw there were a few customers, most of them fishermen by the stench of fis that surrounded them. One was a tall man who seemed likely to be Tiny Tom, who laughed loudly with various other men.

She continued to eat and ordered more well water, and waited for evening to fall so that the tavern to empty. It seemed to her that this was the time that the thieves were most likely to strike - a near-empty, tired tavern, and their victims too drunk to defend themselves.

The tavern grew busier. After a while, a man approached Vira, sat next to her and whispered a naughty suggestion in her ear. "How about it, girl? I'll give you a copper if you do."

She pretended not to hear him and drank her well water. Underneath her cloak was an axe that she had robbed from the sept graveyard the previous day, but it was well hidden.

"Oh come on, love." He slid his hand up his thigh.
She realised that he was tall and bearded and very possibly not one of the villagers.

She moved her head very slightly so that only he could hear what she said next.
"I'll only come if you invite your friends," she whispered. "Got bills to pay, children to feed. And that's two coppers each."

She turned to look up at him, smiling invitingly. "Of course you can go first," she purred. "You found me. But I want all your friends, sweetling."
