Some time after her meting with the Braavosi, Jeyne knocked on her son's door.

Rhaegar welcomed his mother, giving her his chair and making sure she was comfortable.
"You can see I'm back from the war Mother. Not without loss though."

She sat with a sad smile on her face. "I heard about Vermax," she said. "I am sorry for your loss. I know you loved him well. But you are safe, and that is what counts for me. I am not overly keen on those scaly beats, as you know."
She sighed.
"I flew with your father occasionally, but I never shall again. Do you mean to claim a new dragon, my love?"

"I doubt I will be permitted by Maegor to do so." replied Rhaegar matter-of-factly, his face betraying no emotion at either the mention of Vermax or the King's likely refusal for him to bond with a new dragon.
If I am not permitted to travel to the Dragonmont, I can only endeavor to develop other talents."

"Oh? What sort of skills?" Jeyne asked. "What will the king take note of, if not dragons?"

"Proficiency with the blade. The ability to general soldiers. Maybe others." replied her son. "They may well prove useful, while I bide my time and hope the opportunity for to bond with a new dragon arises.

"Yes." But she had little hope for that particular outcome and it showed in her voice. "You need friends, Rhaegar. We all do. Perhaps you might consider that above all else/"

"Like your new friend?" replied Rhaegar raising an eyebrow. "Master Delinaal."

"Mayhaps. It might do us good to have a friend who himself has friends outside of the Seven Kingdoms. Perhaps then we will not feel quite so alone. It seems the Crone's guiding light sent Master Delinaal to my door. Perhaps he can be of use to us. So you should look for friends too. Friends who have no cause to love the king or his witch mother."

"It seems too convenient that this Braavosi appears out of nowhere. Why did he seek you out, the mother of - what do they call us - traitorspawn, when there are so many Targaryen cousins not living in disgrace?"

"He seems to have been a friend of a friend of your father's. Please, Rhaegar, don't worry about it. We need friends more now than ever before. The war's over now, so the king's gaze may turn towards us. You don't want him to make us suffer, do you?"

Rhaegar looked sceptical. "And how will the friendship of this Braavosi benefit us Mother? I can think of more useful possible friends."

"Trust me, my love," Jeyne urged. "And you know I cannot speak of such things here." After all, they all knew the Red Keep had eyes and ears where they were not wanted. "What kind of friends shall you make, then, if you are so sure a Braavosi is not worth your friendship."

"Prince Aegon has promised me that he will ask his father for your freedom." replied Rhaegar. "It seems that he considers I have served him well. The friendship of the Crown Prince is not a small thing."

"It's not," Jeyne agreed. "But I could never be happy leaving my children in this awful place. I would be miserable worrying about you all if I were allowed to leave. And the prince is still in thrall to his father's wishes, as much as anyone else."

"And I worry about you mother. It would relieve me greatly, if you were out of Maegor's clutches and back with your family in Dorne." said Rhaegar clasping her hand. "And the very fact Prince Aegon agreed to intercede at my request on your behalf, might mean that he is favorably disposed towards us. I do not take oaths made lightly, Mother"

"I know. But I truly don't want to leave if I am to be left on my own. I want to leave with you and your sisters. That is the inly way it can work, for me. How could I ever rest knowing that old witch is probably cursing you all, and urging the king to have you all beheaded?"

"You won't be on your own Mother. Your family at Yronwood will be there for you. And who knows...maybe some time in the future we will join you there."

"That is not the point!" Jeyne cried. "You forget, Rhaegar, that I have not seen my family in many years. I love them, yes, but they are not the family I once knew. You and your sisters are my real family now, and I will not leave any of you to suffer. If we go to Yronwood, we go together, all of us. There is no other way."

Rhaegar shook his head. "That will not happen, mother. We will never be permitted to leave as a family. If the King grants you permission to leave, we shall not suffer as a result. Why do you think I returned to Kings Landing after the battle of Oldtown?"

"Because you had no choice. We both know the king would kill you if you tried to flee. Your absence would not go unnoticed for long." She frowned. "I know you worry about me, Rhaegar, but I could not ear to never see you again, nor your sisters. And you know the king would prefer me to remain here. Remember, my father presented himself as an enemy of the crown. The king won't have forgotten that."

"I was left to my own devices in Oldtown. It would not have been difficult to escape south towards Dorne." replied Rhaegar. "I came back here to protect you and Elseyris and because I did not hold my oath to Prince Aegon lightly."

"And I am glad you did," she replied. "The king would certainly have punished myself and your sisters if you had fled. fortunately the prince is a better man than his father, so we must pin our hopes on him, and simply endure until that blessed day finally arrives. That, and make friends in case an opportunity presents itself."

"Be wary of trusting anyone, mother. This Braavosi. What do you truly know of him?"
