"I know that he is acquainted with one of your father's friends and that he is attracted to me, and may be convinced to help us, given time. But we have to show him our friendship first. And I know that the people of the court are in thrall to the king, so I can trust none of them. It is better to look for outside help."

Rhaegar raised a sceptical eyebrow. "He knows one our father's friends in passing?" he said somewhat incredulously. "And help us? Help us to do what?"

"That remains to be seen. Now, Rhaegar, I will ask you not to interrogate me in this matter. My business is my own," she sighed. "I will take the chance of friendship over no hope at all."

"Very well mother." said Rhaegar his voice chilling. "I will respect your wishes, as long as it does not negatively effect myself. Unfortunately as my mother, your business concerns me and my sisters. If you make the wrong decision in this matter, then it could well cost us our lives, or set back the slow progress I am making to redeem our names."

"We could all say the same of one another's efforts," Jeyne replied, rubbing her aching temples. "But if we were all too afraid to do anything, none of us would make any friends at all, and our lives would be even poorer than they are now. I wish you would think about your sisters. They too are trying to make friends, I know."

"I know." said Rhaegar. "I hear they are using their own particular......talents to do so."
He rose. "Well mother. Our conversation has been enlightening, but I must go. I shall call on you again soon. The Gods willing I have some good news to share with you then"

"Let us hope so," she said. "Be careful, my love." She stood and departed. OOC - we're in your room, not hers!

Rhaegar followed her shortly after, closing the door firmly behind him and locking it. There were people he needed to see. OOC: I know.

Elseyris gently tapped the door to her brother's rooms and waited patiently, leaning on her crutch.

Rhaegar crossed to the door and opened it. If he was surprised at his sister's appearance he didn't show it, although his eyes briefly ran up and down the wooden crutch she was leaning on.
"Sister, come in and take a seat. Get off that foot."
Once she was seated and wine served, he too took a seat and studied her for a brief moment. He noted she looked tired.
"So to what do I owe the pleasure of your presence?" he asked gently.,

She took the seat gratefully, though made no motion to take the wine. She was clearly tense, most likely because of Trajan lurking just inside the room.
"I just wanted to see if you were alright, what with... the betrothals."
She uttered it awkwardly. There was no good way to say it.

Rhaegar shrugged his shoulders in reply.
"I didn't expect to be able to marry for love, so it is neither here or there to me."

"Well, then I suppose I need neither congratulate nor commiserate you," Elsey said blankly, wishing that he wasn't so distant all the time.
"Did the King reject your petition to tame a new dragon as well?"

A rueful smile broke over Rhaegar's usually impassive features. He chose his words carefully knowing that the Knight Inquisitor was listening.
"I saw no reason to petition His Grace. I already knew the answer he would give if I did."

Elsey looked at her brother with sorrow;
"Oh Rhaegar, I'm sorry it has come to this."
She reached forward and took one of his hands, stroking the back of it with her thumb.
"Perhaps, in time, things will calm down. In the meantime, I am still here for you, dear brother. I know you do not like to be familiar, but no man is an island."

Rhaegar's first instinct was to snatch his hand away. His very core had been largely ice since their father's death and the subsequent humiliations heaped upon him and his immediate family by their cousins. The initial rage he had felt, had since been beaten out of him and what was left had turned to ice. As a result he had trained himself not to feel anything, a habit that was now ingrained, even with members of his own family. To do anything different might have meant the difference between life and death.
Nevertheless Elseyris' seemingly heartfelt gesture and words may have melted a little of the ice surrounding Rhaegar's heart. His eyes briefly glistened with tears, but they did not fall. Hastily he blinked them away, his expression still inscrutable. His hand remained where it was.
"I thank you Elsey." he said using the nickname he had called her when they were smaller, but one he used rarely these days. "I will remember."

It made Elseyris smile to hear him call her Elsey. It had been years since she had heard him say it. It reminded her of a time when their lives were not so fractured.
"I... don't say this often enough, but... I love you very much, Rhaegar. You will always be my family, whatever hardships we endure."

Rhaegar nodded wordlessly in response.
He slowly poured himself some wine, watering it as was his usual custom, taking a sip, before setting it down on the table. Only then could he trust himself to speak.
"I know that sister." he finally said, reverting back to his customary formality. "Would that Visenya felt the same."

"I would rather have us so as well. Perhaps, in time, you two will become friendly again. I can try to speak with her, if you wish?"

Rhaegar shook his head.
"We have spoken. To no avail. She thinks I am insufferable. Yet for all her accusations that I am supposedly controlling and overbearing, she resents anyone but herself speaking to our mother. In truth my fault is that I am the firstborn child of our father and she is not. I can do nothing to satisfy her desire to fulfil that role, other than to die."
He took another sip and gave a rare wan smile. "And that Elsey, I will be aiming not to do."

"I would rather none of us died, Rhaegar," Elseyris replied, sadly. "I cannot speak for the real reasons you two do not get along, but I am sure Visenya would not be so shallow. Being the eldest in this family is not the prestigious position it was in years gone by. I doubt she covets it as you think she does. I also don't think she resents either of us for spending time with Mother, but I am often told I am too naive and trusting, so perhaps I am not the best judge."
She fidgeted with the end of one of her braids.
"I love you both, and it pains me to see you always fighting or pointedly ignoring one another. I cannot change what is past, but I can ask that you remember that we never know when the Stranger might take us. I know I would hate to leave amends unmade with those I love, such as yourselves. I don't want it to take someone dying for this family to get along."

Rhaegar spread his hands in exasperation.
"I know that. But what else could it be? I have done nothing to warrant her dislike. She likes her own way certainly, but I have done little to hinder her desires, since our father died. I have not sought her enmity."

Elsey took Rhaegar's hands;
"Father's death affected us all profoundly, in ways that we may still not fully understand. Both of you retreated into yourselves a great deal. Perhaps, if we had grieved together, as a family, we might not have drifted so far apart. Visenya shares little with me nowadays, so I do not know what is at the heart of the matter, but I do not believe that either of you wish to be in such discord. If you wish me to leave it alone, I will, but I would be willing to mediate if you two were willing to try and resolve your differences. I can see the good in you both, perhaps we could find a peace together."

"That will be up to Visenya." said Rhaegar firmly. "It will be difficult to forgive her two-three years of disdain and insults."

"As you say, Rhaegar, I can only offer to help."
Elseyris released his hands, and folded her own.
"Feel free to tell me to get lost, but I believe that holding onto grudges damages the person holding them far more than the person against whom they are held. You can never move forward if you live in the past. I would encourage you both to forgive eachother, and free yourselves of this negativity you both bear."
She looked kindly yet evenly at him;
"I hasten to add that I am only giving a viewpoint, as someone who cares, as your sister. I am not trying to push either of you to act outwith your own conscience. I am not taking sides, just trying to see if peace may be made."
