"I'll keep it in mind." replied Rhaegar not sounding like he was convinced.
He took another sip of wine before glancing at the silent Knight Inquisitor.
"You are coping Elsey?" he said in a low voice.

"With what?" Elsey replied, her voice suddenly quiet and still.

Rhaegar leant back. Her response told him all he needed to know.
"Our life here in the Red Keep." he said. "I find myself chafing at the inaction. I hope to be able to use my particular talents to serve His Grace in any capacity I can."

Elsey lowered her head, looking at the floor for a few moments, before looking back up to meet her brother's gaze;
"I yet live and breathe. I try to be hopeful for the future, but I am afraid too. I am mourning losses greater than I could have countenanced. Sleep does not come easily, and when it does, it is haunted by nightmares. I feel weaker and more helpless than I ever have, and each day seems like a battle just to keep myself from giving up entirely. But I am still here."

Now it was Rhaegar's turn to grasp her hand, an action he found harder than he expected.
"There is always hope Elsey. Always."

Elsey smiled dryly;
"I try very hard to keep believing it, truly I do. I even try to convince Mother of it too, but I fear she has allowed life here to rob her of her hope. I tell myself I will not become like that, but I am so exhausted from fighting against it."

"I am sure opportunities will arise in order to better our lives here." said Rhaegar. "Oldtown was a start."

"Oldtown lost us our dragons, and gained us further contempt from the King," Elsey replied, her voice beginning to sound strained with distress. "I want to believe that things will improve, Rhaegar, but it is so difficult to see how."

"His Grace yes....." replied Rhaegar carefully. "But there are others who understand that we may live useful lives and that we have certain skills that can be used in service of the Iron Throne."

"I suppose, though I don't feel much use to anyone."

"You are useful Elsey. We have to hope that those who do know will intercede with those who are yet to discover that fact." replied Rhaegar, glancing covertly at the silent Knight Inquisitor standing at the door.

"I suppose we can only trust in the Gods, those we love, and ourselves."
Elsey held Rhaegar's gaze, but had grown pensive.

"Indeed." said Rhaegar. He fell silent.

"I'm sorry, that was supposed to be hopeful. I seem to have failed, again."
She fidgeted awkwardly with the silver chain around her neck.

Rhaegar broke his silence. "I will do what I can for you Elsey, however it is your husband who will provide for you in the future."

Elseyris only just managed to suppress a snort of derision, instead making herself appear impassive;
"May we all have every happiness."
She pushed herself up out of the chair, retrieving her crutch.
"I shall take my leave now, Rhaegar. I will be easy to find, if you have need of me. Try to think on what I have said."

Rhaegar nodded. He hoped that his sister would understand he could not be too open, with the Knight Inquisitor listening to every word and no doubt reporting back to Maegor.
He too rose and escorted her to the door, pointedly ignoring Trajan as he did so.

Seeing Rhaegar's pointed lack of acknowledgement of Trajan, Elsey gave her brother an understanding nod, patting him gently on the shoulder.
"Perhaps we may speak of happier things someday, Rhaegar. Take care of yourself."
She smiled gently, then was swept from the room.
