Dany had a servant fill most of Monterys' glass with water before adding a bit of honeyed wine to it for the flavour. She listened to him quietly and smiled at his last remark. "That you no doubt will. And I could not think of anyone better for that job. What is Lord Reyne like?" she inquired as her own goblet was filled with the Arbor gold.

"He's nice enough." He took the drink and took a large mouthful before he answered. "He's the kind of man who likes to be everyone's friend. He's always there with a jest and a smile, except when he's tending to his duties in the treasury or meeting the foreign visitors. He likes women a lot, even though he's married and has children. I know he has a woman in the city." Monty shrugged. "But all the gossip says that most people at court have more than one lover."

Sipping from her glass, Dany realized that Monterys had grown up to be a quite perceptive young man. "Oh, surely they do. Most of them are of Valyrian blood, after all. A woman in the city.. a commoner, then?" she asked, sounding only somewhat interested. "I do hope Jace arrives soon, or all this food will go cold. Do you get to see him at all or do your duties keep you apart for the most part?"

"We see each other sometimes. But you're right, we both have duties so we can't spend all our time together," Monty remarked "but we hardly see you either, sister." He drank some more of the flavoured water. "I think Lord Reyne's mistress must be a commoner. I don't want to know, really."

"I know," she said regretfully. "Hopefully we will see each other more often now that I am the Lady of Driftmark.. I am not sure if my duties will let me travel for long periods of time anymore."

"That's sad." But he said it as if it were something that was expected of him rather than really meaning it. "But even rulers have to travel, sometimes. Maybe you still can? Mother can look after Driftmark, if you want her to.

Jacaerys Velaryon arrived late, having been unable to excuse himself from His Grace's service any sooner. It was clear as day that he was Edric's progeny, the spitting image of his father in his youth. It was no secret that he had taken poorly to the news of his father's death, more so when Lord Redwyne was named to his seat on the Small Council.
"Apologies for my late arrival, sister." he said in greeting.

"No worries, Jace," said Dany and stood briefly to give him a small hug. She motioned for the servants to cut the meat and serve it before dismissing them. "How have you been?" she asked, studying him closely. It was almost impossible not to be reminded of their father at that point.

"Better, now that you are home safe." he replied, though with little true mirth. "Father would be happy to see us all together again."

Dany nodded and fell silent. Jace must have known that their father had been the most important person to her. "I wish they had sent him to the sea instead of the Targaryen pyre," she said after a while.

"Like the reavers?" Jace inquired. "That would have hardly been fitting."

"What reavers?" she asked with the slightest frown while cutting the meat on her plate. "I meant that he would have preferred to be sent out to the sea on a burning boat like a Velaryon," she explained.

"The Ironborn give their dead a burial at sea, believing it runs in their veins." he explained , with a look of distaste. "The Tullys send their own on boats down the river, likely for the same reason."
"As long as he went to the flames, little else matters. Despite our role in this realm, we belonged to fire before the sea. That is what runs in our veins."

Daenerys gave her younger brother a sympathetic look. She did not recall him being so bitter and wondered whether it had more to do with their father's death or the fact that Jacaerys had been squiring for the king for the past few years. Suspecting the latter, she sipped from her wine before continuing with the meal. There is no fire running through our veins, she thought. Only blood.
"You are wise beyond your years, Jace," Dany replied amiably, even though she did not feel that way. She just knew that if it came down to a choice, she would choose the sea over fire every single time. "But enough of that now."
