"Thank you, that is kind of you to say. Was the King very angry?"

"He was silent for a while after being told of Oldtown, so yes, quite angry" Janos said.

"I had thought that might be the case. He values dragons higher than even his own children, it seems."
Elsey looked ahead, then back to Janos;
"Do you have a family, My Lord Hand?"

"Not much, My father Lord Aurane died years back, so now that my brother, Lord Edric, is gone, that really only leaves his daughter lady Daenerys" Janos said, showing more a moment of slight regret when he mentioned his brother. "So other than her, not really"

"I am sorry, that was probably rude of me to ask. I'm just curious about people. I am sorry about the loss of your brother. I didn't know him well, but I understand that he was a good man."
Elsey's expression became sad, as her mind was also cast back to thoughts of the dead.

"It's fine." Janos said. "Truth be told, I was never too close to him, though I do have everything to thank him for" he continued.

"Everything to thank him for? Surely you are Hand of your own merit, good sir," said Elseyris, with some confusion and interest at his wording.

"Not everyone is how they appear, all men have secrets, and so few survive without men who help to keep them" Janos said as he arrived at where the route to the tower of the hand split off. "I wish you the best in your recovery. Give the master of whisperers my regards Lady Elseryis" he said before heading his own way.

/////////////////////////////////////////////// Janos was somewhat weighed down, with a pile of books and documents in his hands as he walked through the corridoors, moving as quickly as he could with the load.

Elseyris spotted Janos, approaching in the opposite direction, as she walked the corridors towards the gardens, Trajan just a few steps behind.
"My Lord Hand," she said, with a nod. She looked paler than when they had last met, the inquisitive glimmer in her eyes absent. She was walking with a crutch.
"Would you like some assistance with those?"
She nodded to the books in his arms.

"Thank you" Janos said as he attempted to get some of the books off of the pile. "I have heard of the recent... arrangments, I hope you are able to make some good of them" He said, a slight bit of sympathy on his tone.

Taking the books he offered her, Elsey held them tightly with one arm, and began to walk in stride with Janos;
"How would you suggest I do that, My Lord Hand? Many seem to advise me to find good in my situation, but I am yet to hear the method."
Her voice and expression were sad and distant.

"Few things are black and white, some are not how they seem, nothing is truly absolute, and often the problem is the silver lining too" Janos said. "On one side, you have much to cause difficulty, but should you be capable of enduring such difficulties, you are right under the scrutiny of those who search for disloyalty, and who I doubt will find any in you. Effectively your loyalty means that you are likely safe here" He continued, his tone sympathetic and trying to reassure her. "While on nowhere near the same scale, I have once had a moment where things have completely changed for me, I won't say I know anything about what your going through, however in my experience there are 2 types of people, those who take fate, and are ruled by what happens to them, and those who take that which happens to them, and climb up from there."

"An interesting view," Elsey replied, sounding more engaged, surprised by Janos' empathetic response. "I have rarely thought myself safe here, and have not perceived that my loyalty made any difference, since I am assumed by many to be traitorous by blood."
Her grip tightened a little on the books she carried.
"Would you be willing to tell me of the moment that changed everything for you?"

"There wasn't so much a moment, as a set of events that changed it for me" Janos said. "Back when I grew up in Driftmark I was not the most perceptive, and some of the less respectful servants used that to their advantage, a couple of times I was tricked or manipulated, until eventually my father decided having me sent to Kings landing was the solution to such events. " he continued as he walked.

"I find it surprising that the Hand of the King would not be perceptive, but I am sorry that you found yourself manipulated by malicious people. I can understand that feeling. What happened, if I may ask?"

"Back then I was not the man I am now." Janos said. "I would have been about nine when the first incident occurred, a man at driftmark had been stealing money from the house treasury, he had bribed one of the servants, who at the time I thought of as my friend, and who had used that so as to convince me to help indirectly, the scheme was quickly figured out, at which point the man took... drastic action" He continued. "There were a few better thought out incidents over the next few years, until I was sent here to prevent more from occurring" he finished.

"That sounds terrible. It is awful that some people will take advantage of trust."
Elsey looked at Janos sympathetically.
"Are you happier now?"

"Such events as those taught me much about the world, while I would not wish to relive them, they are an important part of how I came to be where I am now" Janos said, "As to being happy, in a way, there are things from my past I will always miss, things I will always wonder about how they could have been different, but at the same time, I am here where I am, and I can't say there is much I would change if I could"

"What things do you miss?"

"Ironically one of the things I miss the most is how I could be oblivious to nearly everything, though I also miss driftmark as a whole, though I can't say I have thought of it as home in a long time" Janos replied.

Elseyris nodded slowly in understanding.
"I'm quite sure most remember fondly the times when they were less troubled by the harshness of reality, even though it made them vulnerable. What is Driftmark like?"

"The last time I was there, which would at a guess be 5 years back, it was a relatively varied place, around my fathers seat it was relatively easy to find somewhere calm and quiet, and much of the island was like that, though I think I came to prefer Spicetown, which was busier, but at the same time that was what made it alive" Janos said.

"Interesting. And which do you prefer; calm and quiet, or bustling and alive?"

"I sometimes enjoy places like spicetown, though overall I find I prefer quieter places, fitting I guess" Janos said.
