The corridors around the Red Keep, from near the kitchens to the royal apartments, what ever bit of corridor you need.

Rhaella was on her way to her chambers the night of the feast to honour the foreign dignitaries. She walked along with two of her ladies, talking in a lively fashion about the night.

When Rhaella was turned the last corner to her rooms she'd be met with the sight of her middle daughter, in full dress, facing away from her with her ear pressed against the door, as if listening for something.

Rhaella approached. "Raena!" She cried. "What are you doing? This is most odd behaviour! Don't let your father catch you."

"It was him I was hoping not to catch," Rhaena replied under her breath for the first part, "I was looking for you, mother... I had wanted to be sure you were alone before I knocked for you."

"AH. Quite understandable. I'd not care to be caught by my own daughter," Rhaella said with a laugh. "Well, here I am. Speak, if you will. Is something amiss?"

"Nothing is amiss, something interesting has happened I thought I would tell you about before I have to leave again," she replied, feeling awkward in the dress and shifted from one foot to the other, "Fa - The King has given me command of some men for the war," she informed her mother, unsure on what her reaction would be like, "I would have liked you to hear it from me before you were told and I had just gone" she paused and remembered what Valarr had told her, "And to say a proper goodbye, as I may not see you tomorrow.

Surprise flickered across Rhaella's face. "Gods, i wish he had consulted with me about that," she sighed. "I am not sure I like my daughter being given her own command so young. I was rarely even allowed to do more than serve as a scout, until I had done my duty as a wife."
She sighed again. "But it doesn't matter now. The king cannot be denied his wishes. So...I offer my congratulations and urge you to keep safe."

"I am not you, mother, and I am not anyone's wife so I have no wifely duty. You do not have to pretend to be happy for me, I didn't think you would be, but I still had to tell you," she said, a bit perturbed, "And at least you have two others should something go awry, it's not like losing your only one," Rhaena replied, meaning it in her own pragmatic style rather than as accusatory.

Rhaella embraced her daughter. "I don't want to lose any of my daughters. I have faith in your courage, I do, but it is no easy thing to see your children go to war especially as I am not going with you. I know that would be imprudent. I am not the kind of mother who wishes to take away her child'd responsibilities. But I am going to worry about you."
She eased back a bit.
"I will be happy for you. When you come back safe and triumphant."

Rhaena liked her use of the word 'when' not 'if' "I shall just have to return all the faster then, to put your mind at ease. Would it help if I told you I had enlisted the aid of Uncle Valarr?"

Relief washed over Rhaella. She trusted her brother absolutely. After all, he had once saved her life.
"Of course it would. I know you will be safe with him. You are going to Bitterbridge, I presume?"

"In a manner," she said vaguely, a smile spreading across her pretty face, "But regardless of what is happening, it will not be for long. We are planning on making our march south in earnest."

"Good." Rhaella looked at Rhaena for a long moment before she kissed her forehead. "Vhagar keep you safe, my dear. Make sure you listen to Valarr. And listen to Maekar too, but don't let him forget you are the king's trueborn daughter.2

She was surprised by what her mother said, her eyebrows knitting together, "He never forgets, mother, it just seems less important out in the fields than it does in the castle."

"Does it? Well, I am not sure I agree there. And yet you and he are fond of one another. I do not deny you that. We Targaryen women seem cursed to have difficulties with our husbands' bastards. Your Grandmother has never liked Valarr, either. Yet Maekar is certainly competent. I will not deny him that. Though a little more humility would not go amiss."

"You could say that of all of us, I think, a family trait, as it were," Rhaena said, with a half smile at her mother, but was thinking about her brother, "You may not like him mother, but as you say, he is good at what he does, and if that is what wins this war, then that is for the best, surely, not slapping him down by pulling rank?"

It is not a case of liking and disliking," Rhaella sighed. "It is about respect. But never mind that now. The war is what matters at the moment. We shall win. If need be, I will fly down on Amethyst but I dare not go now, not while you have your own men to impress. That is important too."

She wondered about if she meant that meakar should respect her, or she should not respect him. "Winning the war is more important than me impressing some men." She said pleasantly, but thought bitterly if her mother cared for anything as much as she did appearances, "but thank you mother, it will give me an air of greater authority if I don't arrive behind my queen mothers skirts."

"Exactly. You must be a commander, my love. I will not take that away from you. So long as your father remains in Kings Landing and wishes me to stay with him, I shall do so. In the meantime, you shall earn your spurs as a commander without either one of us present, as our landbound noblemen say." She smiled gently at Rhaena before her expression changed and she was the queen again. "It is no easy thing to wait here making polite conversation with the court and our guests while there is a war yet to be done, but I shall do it, for now. I have longed prayed that your father wished to lead the final assault on Oldtown himself. I have dreamed of seeing that vile Dragonbane burn. But, alas, great Vhagar has not yet heard my prayers. Perhaps I shall not see it, but you will."

"I would not have it any other way," she said, "It is a shame all the dragons cannot go at once and end this war in a second, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be a possible thing" she didn't understand why. it sounded like it would save a lot of time. "I just hope I can duly honour our family name the way you have and our family has before me."

"You will," Rhaella insisted. "How could my daughter do otherwise. Listen to your uncle and do nothing rash. All will be well, I know it."

It was the not doing rash things she might potentially have a problem with.
"Well, I am leaving tomorrow, and I have a lot of things to do, so I had better go now, and get things ready for my flight back, I should get a good night sleep while I can."

"Yes. Get a good night's sleep," Rhaella urged. "I will be thinking of you. Good luck."
She embraced Rhaena more tightly than ever before, but let her go with a sad, reluctant expression.

Rhaena hugged back, smiled at her mother and walked off down the corridors to her own room.
