"That sounds wonderful." Sergio replied, and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "Until then." He rose slowly.

She showed him to the door and was smiling when she closed it behind him.

Elseyris emerged from her own rooms later in the morning than usual, her eyes red-rimmed and tired from the unpleasantness of the previous night, and headed directly for her mother's rooms. She knew that she would be unable to speak freely, what with Trajan in tow, but she wasn't going to let that keep her from seeing her family. Despite how drained she felt, she kept her voice cheerful;
"Mother, may I come in?"

Jeyne heard a strain in her daughter's voice. "Please do," she said, worrying already. "Tell me what's wrong."

Elseyris embraced Jeyne tightly, leaning against her as much for her wounded ankle as for comfort.
"May we go lie on your bed for a while, like we used to when I was little? I am missing being cradled," she said, with a sad smile.

"Of course we may. Are you unwell, my dear? You look pale," Jeyne observed. "How is your ankle?"

"I'm not feeling terribly well, if I am honest. I think hobbling around on a bad ankle is taking up an unexpected amount of energy. I'm also not sleeping. Milk of the poppy only does so much."
Elsey clambered onto the bed and snuggled into her mother's embrace, gratefully swathed in her warmth, allowing herself to feel small, cocooned.
"I'm sorry for the extra... company."
She glanced across the room at Trajan's dark form, lurking just outside the doorway.

"It doesn't matter. I'm disinclined to argue with the king's decree," Jeyne murmured. "Are you at least getting accustomed to one another? I had hoped you would be able to find some common ground."
But Jeyne's glance at Trajan and the hopelessness in her voice indicated that she didn't really believe it.

"I am not sure we will ever become accustomed to one another. If there is any common ground at all, it is proving hard to find. I try not to judge people, truly, but..."
She trailed off, a lump forming in her throat, her huge brown eyes welling up. Her next words were the tiniest of whispers;
"He's a monster, mother. The things he says to me..."
She began to cry softly, burying her face in Jeyne's hair.

Jeyne hugged Elsey close. "I wish I could help you, my love. You know I don't like these people. But if it is this bad now, what am I to do after you are married"?" She whispered. "I cannot come between you when he is your husband. Oh, my dear, is there no way out?"

"It's alright, Mother. I will be alright. As long as I can still come see you, that will be enough to keep me going. Speaking of ways out will not be tolerated, we mustn't do it. Well, not for me. Even if we were not betrothed, he would still be following me around. I fear that all I can do is hope that things will not always be so hopeless."
She stroked her mother's hair for comfort;
"I was such a fool to think I could change all our fortunes. I am sorry, Mother, I should have listened to you."

"What's done is done," Jeyne murmured. "I can understand why the king set him to follow you around, but marriage is a different matter entirely. That is...too horrible to contemplate." Elsey felt her mother tremble with the horror of it. "We must hope instead that obedience to the king's wishes will one day grant us freedom. Defiance will get us nowhere."

"I don't see how I can change the King's mind on the marriage. He is already contemptuous enough of me. You are right, quiet obedience is our only hope to survive."
Elsey shifted back a little, so she could look into her mother's face;
"I wish I could marry for love, like you did."

"I wish that too," Jeyne murmured. "Yet marrying for love brought me little good except you children and your father doomed us all to misery. Love is not all you need in a marriage. Respect, strength, interests in common, all those are important too. If you can find them."

I have all of those things, and more, but we have been forced apart.
Elsey felt sorrow and bitterness at that thought, but did not voice it.
"The King will never let me have any of those with anyone, I expect," she said instead, vaguely. "I have been wondering much of late whether all this is even worth enduring."
That thought, though it dwelt in her heart almost constantly now, brought up fresh tears, and her voice became a sob or despair.

"No!" Jeyne gripped Elsey's hands with her own, harder than was usual for her. "No, Elsey, you must never think that. You are worth more than a tragic death, my love. And surely being in close proximity with one another will allow you to fall into a routine with...that...man." She shivered. "I hate it, truly, but your only hope is to find some common ground with the bastard. Be nice to him, give him what he wants."

"I fear that what he wants is to mutilate me," Elsey whispered through her crying. "The only words he has for me are vile insults and threats."

Jeyne winced. "he will get tired of them eventually. The important thing is not to react, so he gets tired more easily."

"It's hard to remain passive when it goes against my nature. You know I have always been quick to fight back when I am insulted or threatened. My life and wholeness of body have never been at stake though, so I must suppress myself. It makes me feel weak and cowardly though. Being nice to someone who treats me with such contempt is something I have trouble imagining."

"I know, I know," Jeyne soothed. "But it is your only hope. I don't want to see you hurt, my love, and you will be, if you defy him. So you must be a good, obedient wife until he learns to leave you alone. I'm so sorry, i wish I could spare you, but the king has the right to match your marriage."

"I know, Mother. I know you would spare us all if you could. Have Visenya or Rhaegar spoken to you about their betrothals?"

"Not really. It is unfortunate, for all of you. I can only hope that Visenya will be content with having a keep of her own. I'm appalled that Rhaegar must marry a peasant, but I hear there is talk of giving them a manse in the city, which might suit him. You have the worst of it, my dear. Strange that you should be considered the worst threat, you who are the sweetest of my children. But your friendship with the prince has done us no favours there," Jeyne sighed.

Elseyris' sorrow twisted like a knife in her heart, and she could not control her tears;
"No, it hasn't, I suppose. But, whatever happens to me, I would not trade it for all the gold in Casterly Rock."

"I would," Jeyne said, with less sympathy than her daughter might have liked. "I could do so much with gold. It would be enough to get us safely away from this awful place and keep all four of us in comfort for our whole lives. Wouldn't you choose that over living in fear?"

"The only thing I would wish to choose is to be true to my own heart," said Elsey, wiping tears from her face, aching to tell her mother how she really felt, but knowing it would only make things worse.
"I'm sorry, Mother. I didn't mean to upset you."
