If Laena understood, she gave no verbal sign of it, simply nodding in response.
"Maekar would not be a suitable target for our experiments then. We need to find something that will make you angry enough to learn to harness your powers. Do you find yourself using your powers when you are in danger?"

"Nothing happened during the war, I find I am very... Unfazed by physical dangers," she commented, referencing her very reckless childhood, that Laena would know off, and all of her near fatal accidents, "are you suggesting I risk my life to see if I can bring them about? She was not shocked or upset by the suggestion, and seemed to be pondering its merits.

"Perhaps. I need to learn more about what triggers your power. It appears that you cannot trigger them yourself, not yet, so you need someone to provide the situation which causes them to rise unbidden. But if you think danger will not serve, it is of no matter. I must seek to make you angry, then."

"I am not sure you can make yourself angry, and I don't think someone else can make you so if you know it is there intent, but I am willing to try anything you suggest Grandmother, I should very much like to control this before it gets even more out if hand." She paused for a second, seemingly choosing her words with care, "i think it is getting stronger,"

"Indeed? That is most interesting. We had better teach you then. You spoke of shadows moving. Have you ever tried to control your shadow?"

"I haven't tried to control any of it," she said, "when I had the altercation it seemed as if it did what I wanted to do,"

"So your shadow fought Elseyris, which is what you wished to do yourself?" Laena asked. "Did you use your mind to ask your shadow to fight her?"

"I wished to do it, but I did not will it to do so," she said, "I haven't tried to control it any of my problems before, except to try to stop them happening at all," Rhaena explained again, "And my shadow fought with hers, not her physical self."

"I see. Well, your shadow needs no summoning. Try to bend it to your will." Laena gestured.

"Now?" she said, looking round to where her shadow was silhouetted on the floor.
She had no idea how try and control it, but decided concentrating on it, might be best. Her face pinched slightly in focus as she tried to move it, without moving herself.

OOC = Rhaena must roll 120 to control her powers. 50+36=fail
Laena watched her granddaughter's shadow with avid eyes as Rhaena concentrated as best she could. But she couldn't make her shadow move. Her head began to ache with frustration as she stared at the shadow which moved only when she moved her body.

(OOC: That is outrageous!)
Rhaena kept trying, glaring openly at the shadow now, just because she hated the idea of not being able to control it. She very much disliked failure. She could feel her frustration growing but kept that as under wraps as should could, not wanting it to interfere, and once again tried to will her shadow to move, ignoring the increasing throbbing in her head.

OOC = 50+46=fail
Rhaena's anger grew as she kept trying to move the shadow. To her frustration, it wouldn't do anything. It wouldn't even move by itself, as it had done in the camp, let along move to her bidding.

Rhaena's fist clenched at the consistant failure, getting angry at her not being able to immediately control it, the way only impatient young people can be, and slammed her fist down on the arm of the chair. Her head hurt and she was getting nowhere, the whole exercise was pointless, because she'd never do it. Resentment and anger and frustration bubbling over.

Rhaena's anger gets the better of her and her powers come soaring out, unbidden. Her attention having been on the shadow channels her innate powers into her shadow. It breaks free, swoops around the room and puts a tall glass candle that had been burning on the mantelpiece.
"Well done, child," Laena said. "But that was not deliberate, was it? Quick, try to control it again before the shadow vanishes."
Although the room is growing darker, it is still daylight and the shadow has not yet vanished.

Rhaena did not answer Laena as she was concentrating on the shadow, and followed it with her eyes as the shadow moved, and fought against her usual instinct to try and stop and suppress it. She looked directly at it, and willed it to move the glass candle on the mantlepiece over to the other side of it, or move it at all, thinking maybe giving it a focus may help over just trying to will it to move by itself.

OOC = 50+84=success
As Rhaena watched, her shadow picked up the glass candle and moved it to the far side of the mantelpiece. Laena clapped a few times.
"Well done."

Rhaena couldn't help but smile a bit, but did not want to break concentration too much. She didn't want to try and do anything more with it right now, knowing small steps would probably be for the best. She tore her eyes away from the shadow and looked to her Grandmother, feeling a lot more relaxed that she had proven to herself she could do it, and was now determined to try harder to control it, to get better control.

Laena smiled, briefly, but her eyes danced with pleasure.
"Well done, Rhaena. How did it feel, to harness your powers for once?"

"Good," Rhaena said, nodding, but her expression gave away that it felt more than good, "It is a relief more than anything, to know that they can be controlled if I work at them. It makes me want to control them fully. I felt more powerful too, being in control, rather than it controlling me."

"of course. That is natural. I was younger than you when I learned to control my own powers, but perhaps we can find a way to hep you learn," Laena remarked. "But you will have to trust me."

"I already do, Grandmother," she said, with confidence, "there isn't need for a have to. I would not have come to you, and told you about it if I did not trust you, and you are rumored to be an expert in these matters."

Laena nodded. "I have something to show you. It is in my bedchamber. But this must remain between us both."
