As the Princess Dowager, Laena has quarters in the royal apartments in Maegor's Holdfast. Her bedroom and solar are both decorated in Targaryen red and black. Candles lighten up what would otherwise be dark rooms. Taena Storm and her other ladies in waiting also live here.

Laena's maid showed Aemy in. The Princess Dowager was reading a huge book when her granddaughter entered, but she put it aside when Aemy was announced.
"Granddaughter," she said, very cool, as was her usual habit. Nobody could accuse Laena Targaryen of being warm, not even to most of her close kin. "What can I do for you, my child? I see you have been eating well, even when you were at war."

"Oh? Do tell." Laena's eyes were bright with curiosity. "And do not think I do not eat well. Some of us are just better at controlling ourselves than others. I do not enjoy gorging myself. "

That surprised Laena, as so little seemed to. But she quickly put on a neutral expression again.
"Manticore poison? They say the stings are terribly painful. Though I am surprised to hear you hear you express an interest in such things. My child, you do realise that the war is almost over. Only Oldtown and the Arbor remain major threats to our authority. And manticore poison is exceedingly rare and expensive. I highly doubt any maester here in the Seven Kingdoms has any in his possession."

"They will," Laena agreed. "The war must come first, child. Had you thought to pursue this business of manticores a few years ago, perhaps there would be time. But the lands in the Jade Sea are dangerous and largely unknown. Even if you achieved your desire, you would almost certainly arrive back too late to join the battle. I you are set on this, we shall speak of it again when the battle is done. I shall want to examine the books in the Citadel, after all."

Daenerys knocked on the door, arriving to have supper with the Princess Dowager and her ladies-in-waiting, having been invited by who she considered her best friend at court, Taena Storm. Although not in the best of moods after hearing about the gruesome death of Tybalt Toyne earlier, Dany figured it would have been rude to reject the offer. Besides, it was most likely a good distraction anyway.
She wore a deep red dress that left her shoulders and bare, and a golden arm ring shaped like a dragon, although from afar, it much resembled a snake instead.

When Daenerys arrived, she was greeted by Taena in a simple green dress and gold jewellry. Taena hugged her friend with a grin. "I'm so glad you came! Come and meet Grandmother!"
She led Dany in to meet the Princess Dowager, who was on this occasion clothed in deepest purple with a silver lining. Her hair, in his customary bun, made her look rather severe but she wore the hint of a smile, as Taena announced "Grandmother, this is Daenaerys Velaryon."
"Thank you, child. Greetings, niece," Laena said to Dany. "I am pleased you could come to see me. I have several kinds of herbal tea, or wine if you prefer. And cakes, of course."
"Oh, Dany, you have to try the lemon cakes," Taena insisted. "Simply divine."

Dany couldn't help but to smile at the warm welcome and followed Taena to the other room. She curtsied at being presented. The Princess Dowager just had an air of authority to her, and it was clear that getting to her bad side would almost definitely end terribly.
"Your Grace," she said, "thank you for having me. Tea would be nice." She grinned at Taena. "I would love to. I missed them terribly at Braavos."

"Oh. Don't they have nice cakes in Braavos? That's a pity. I was going to ask you to take me with you when Grandmother can spare me."
"yes, yes, you young people always want to go off on adventures," Laena grumbled. "But never mind that now. Daenerys, would you prefer peppermint tea, blackberry or nettle?"

"Peppermint, please," Dany replied, smiling at Taena. "Perhaps once Victory is old enough, we could go." She turned to the Princess Dowager again. "The way I saw it back then, it was either that or going to war," she explained. "Not counting my dragon, I had no way of protecting myself so I went and learned a few things on Braavos.

"Admirable of you." But it wasn't clear if Laena was serious or not. "Brew the tea, Taena."
"Yes, Grandmother." The bastard girl immediately went to the pot of water boiling in the hearth. She stirred in the peppermint leaves. "Are you going to war now, Dany? You must have learned a lot since I saw you last. I'd have gone myself, if I could."

"I don't plan to," she replied. "Are you saying you would want to go? To war?" she asked, surprised.

"I'm not sure. But it's my duty, I think. They don't give dragons to bastards for no reason. And I'm a passing fair archer. I intend to shoot from dragonback, one day," Taena confided. "But I'd be no more use than an ordinary archer if i went now, so it's best I wait."

Dany nodded as she waited for the tea. "With any luck, the war will be over by that time. Almost everyone that has a dragon is going this time. Seems like a final effort."

"I hope so." Taena got out the teacups and started to pour. laena turned to dany. "it does seem that way. I will remain, as I always do. I intend to step into Oldtown only when the city has been taken. I shall spit on the ashes of the dead and take the books from their library. There will be much of interest there, I do not doubt."

Dany accepted a cup once Taena had finished filling them all with tea. It was a good thing she had not taken a drink drink it yet, because she would probably have spat it out at what the old lady said. In order to win some time for a suitable reply, Dany sipped the hot beverage, but nothing notable came to her mind. "So you will stay to protect the city?" she assumed.

"Yes. Thati s always my duty. I am not made for travel or warfare, truth be told. I am of best use here," the old lady explained. "I am not as young as some of you."

"Well, that is all fine and good. Some obviously have to stay behind.. is the king going this time?" she inquired.

"he is not. He will stay here and rule. But my daughters are both going, and my youngest son too. So some must remain behind," Laena explained. "I do not begrudge them the glory. I care only that the deed is done and the war finished."

Dany found it incredibly ungallant of the king to send his children and wife off to war while sitting behind the safe walls of his castle, but she knew better than to say so. "The day it does end can not come soon enough," she agreed, sipping the tea. "May I?" she asked before helping herself to a lemon cake.

"You may," said Laena at the same time that Taena cried "Of course!"
Laena looked at the two girls "My dears, this war has been raging since before either of you were born. I was a young woman when it began. I am tired of war. I wish to study in peace and see my grandchildren marry and have children of their own. I have worked all my life for the betterment of my house. So many lives have been lost in this war. It must end soon and this Faith Militant must be exterminated." She looked hard at them both. "This Faith is no good to any man or woman."

Daenerys listened to her in silence while working on her cake. She looked at Taena to see if she shared her grandmother's views.

Taena had been listening quietly as well.
"I think...I think it doesn't matter what gods a person worships. My mother's house worships the Seven," she said. "But It's the Faith Militant. They are the wicked ones. They killed my father."
She picked up a cake and looked at Dany "What gods do you worship on Driftmark?"

Dany nodded slowly. "The Faith Militant do need stopping."
She finished the cake and sipped some tea to down it. "The Valyrian gods," she said, giving her a quick sideways glance. "Most everyone on Driftmark does."

"Oh. I wasn't sure. I don't care about gods, truly. I just want our enemies dead."
"As do I," Laena agreed. "Shall you travel after the war, Daenerys?"
