The long and austere hall, with walls made of blue-veined white marble. At the end of it sits the throne of the Arryns, a seat carved of weirwood. It has narrow, arched windows, between which are torches mounted on high iron sconces.

August, 98 AL
Alysanne Arryne made her way to the high hall, still dressed in her white breeches and shirt that she wore for her waterdancing practice, hair tied up in a bun.

She was presently hailed by her father. "Alysanne," Ser Edmyn called. "How goes your practice? I have not had enough time to watch you lately."

Alysanne smiled when she saw her father, nodding at his question. "It goes well, father. I may need some more heavily weighted practice swords soon, and maybe a thinner practice beam."
Alysanne's practicing routine included many different things, but a main focus of it was balancing on a thin beam while making attacking and defensive movements atop it.
"How are you?"

"I'm well enough. I'm sorry I've not had much time to spend with you. I have many duties and my lady wife is rather demanding at present." He sighed. "I will see that you have the new things for your pratice. In the meantime, is there anything else you need? New gowns? Are you happy?" He looked rather concerned.

Alysanne smiled, though inwardly she cursed her father's wife. "Oh no, I am very happy father. Don't concern yourself too much." She gave a small laugh and walked over to one of the large windows that looked out onto the mountains.
"I have been thinking..." She said quietly.

"May I ask what you have been thinking about"? Edmyn asked, stepping closer. There was curiosity in his voice, as well as the residual sadness Alysanne had grown up with, and which she knew to be caused by her mother's death.

Alysanne turned around to study her father, before looking out of the window again.
"I might finally visit King's Landing," She said after a moment. "It is about time I leave the Vale for the first time and visit the capital."

Edmyn winced. There was an awkward silence for perhaps a minute, before he said "Yes. It's time, my dear. I wish it weren't, but I cannot protect you forever. Kings Landing was part of your mother's world, and mine. You belong in it. I have a manse in the city. I can see that it is made ready for our occupation. I will not abandon you to the mercies of the court."

Alysanne's hand went to her father's shoulder and she gave it a little squeeze, smiling reassuringly.
"Thank you father, I appreciate it; but I don't intend to stay for very long. I want to get a small grasp of what the city is about, before returning."

Ser Edmyn smiled sadly. "That is well and good if you dislike the city, but not if you decide you would like to stay. And I cannot allow you to go alone, unchaperoned. That would be impossible. I must go with you, and your septa, and a small household as befits our rank."

Alys gave a small frown. "Oh, I was hoping to fly there on Daeneryon. That way I could get there and back here within a week." She turned back to the window and looked out at the misty peaks.
"I have been thinking of Driftmark too... I actually dreamed about it the other night. Have you ever visited it?"

"Your mother took me shortly after we met. I spent some time there in the early years, but I have not set foot on the island in some years. It may be much changed. You should certainly visit. The island is your by right."

"Many things belong to people by right," Alysanne said, laughing softly. "I am sure my uncle is doing a fine job ruling the island." She turned from the window and made her way along the hall, up to the weirwood throne. "I would like to visit however. I wonder if I would be welcome."

"You could write to your uncle, of course, or you could simply fly up to the castle, though your uncle might take that amiss. I for one would not be pleased if he refused you entry to your own home. Perhaps we ought approach the queen on the matter. Your mother was her dearest friend. For her sake, I would think Her Grace might favour you," Edmyn replied.

"I will write to him then, just to be sure. I wouldn't want to appear threatening in any way, and no doubt my sudden appearance on dragon back would be suspicious," Alysanne replied, stroking the back of the great, wooden chair.
She thought of the queen, her mother's closest friend, and what the woman was like. She certainly was not popular in the Vale. "We will see when we get to King's Landing," She said softly.

"Yes. It has been some time since I were at court myself, but I trust I still have friends there. We must gather our friends and present your case to the queen. It is past time you took your place at Driftmark."

"But this is my home," Alysanne said, turning to her father. "I have grown up in the Vale, lived her all my life. Even if I were to be made lady of Driftmark, I would not want to spend all my time there."

"You need not. Men and women of noble birth often travel, and you are blessed with a creature that can help you travel faster than most. If my lady wife fails to give me a son, you shall remain heir to the Eyrie as well as to Driftmark. It would be expected that you make the Eyrie your seat, then." He smiled. "It it a possibility we must consider, though your grandsire prays that my lady gives him a grandson."

When her father mentioned his wife, Alysanne subtly turned away to hide the frown on her face. The thought of the possible pretender to her rightful seat did not sit well with her.
"A possibility indeed," She said, the tone of her voice still light. "I suppose you are right about traveling. I will begin packing for King's Landing immediately." She smiled.

As if her ears were burning, Wylla Manderly appeared in the doorway, heavy with child. She had always been a curvy woman, she looked exhausted from her pregnancy, though she smiled up at her husband, and his daughter who was only two years younger than she was. "I will give you a son, dearest, I am sure of it," she said to Edmyn, approaching him and linking her arm with his, leaning her head against his shoulder. "You needn't worry that your name will die with you, my love," she cooed, casting a dirty sidelong look at Alysanne that Edmyn couldn't see.

"I will send a raven ordering my caretaker in the city to begin preparing the manse," he said. "There is no rush, my dear. In the meantime will you fly Daeneryon down to the Gates of the Moon and...oh!"
Edmyn turned at his wife's appearance and smiled at her, though it was slightly forced. He couldn't help comparing her to her predecessor.
"My lady, I have no fears regarding my name, I assure you. I know you will do your duty as my wife. Alysanne and I are planning an excursion. I trust you and the baby will be safe under my father's protection."

Alysanne smiled back at Wylla, no animosity to be found in it. "As far as I know my name is Arryn as well, lady Wylla," She said, following it up with a small laugh.
She turned to her father and nodded. "I shall spend some time flying around while you catch me up... if you don't mind of course,".

"As my name is Manderly, sweetling," Wylla said in a tone that suggested she was talking to someone who was partially dim-witted. "However everyone knows that children born in wedlock take their father's name, and your husband's name surely will not be Arryn," she replied bitingly, before turning her attention back to her husband.
"You mean to leave me?" she asked, pouting deeply. In truth, she seemed as though she was on the verge of tears. "The Maester says I am due any week now, and you would leave me to attend the Queen's orgy festival in the capital?"

"It was my decision that we go to King's Landing," Alysanne said before her father could reply. "I wished to finally meet the Queen and discuss my claim on Driftmark, so please be wroth with me and not my father. No doubt you will be able to give birth without him."
