"And that his grace should not yell out, so as to draw in the Kingsguard? It does seem strange." Brandon said. "I'm not the sort to be fanciful, but could some manner of sorcery be at work?" He gazed at Rhaena and Laena, as being the most able to answer on that score.

"It is entirely possible," Laena confirmed, glancing at the Lord Commander in surprise. "Though very difficult to tell, especially when I cannot examine my son's body, or the scene in which he was found. Sorcery is hard to trace, especially for the uninitiated. Neither Maegor and nor Rhaella were blessed with such skills. I doubt it has even occurred to Rhaella."

Areyna listened, a deep frown crossed her face. "Had the idea been brought before my sister that maybe he knew his attacker? Maegor had no reservations as to bringing guests to his chambers."
"Magic or Sorcery, mother? That would explsin why he didn't alert the guards at his door. Maybe his attacker wasn't Lady Vira, after all. "
"IN a fair fight he would've killed whoever dared to cross him."

"We'll learn nothing here gabbing," Brandon said, with a shrug, "Best rest up, it's a long flight home."

Elseyris nodded silently in assent.
"If I may, I'd like to bring Caraxes closer in towards the camp, with the other dragons. It will make things quicker tomorrow."

Aegon nodded his assent to both Brandon and Elseyris. "See that it is done. As the Lord Commander says, we have many miles to cover yet."

Elseyris turned and strode away to where she had landed Caraxes, brought him closer to the camp, then set about quietly arranging herself somewhere to sleep. She had prepared for a much longer journey, so was well equipped for camping.

The party is a bit further along their journey when Edmund Waters arrives with an exhausted dragon that looks familiar to Aegon in particular. The young rider looks slightly familiar to some of the party too; though none of the party can claim to know him well, Aegon and Rhaena recognise him as a former stableboy from Dragonstone and some members of the party recall having breifly seen him in the Dragonpit with the golden dragon shortly before their departure. A careful observer might also note that Edmund has something of the appearance of his late sire, Lord Valarr of Stonedance, though the resemblance is not immediately obvious.
"Your Grace!" Edmund cried as Aelyrion swooped low. "Your Grace, I bring word from the Queen."
As Aelyrion came to rest, Edmund climbed unsteadily down from his mount, legs aching from hours in the saddle, and headed towards Aegon with a sealed letter in hand.

Aegon recognized the dragon. He could hardly forget Aelyrion, who he had spent what seemed like endless hours trying to tame as a child. In the end the beautiful golden beast had spurned the crown prince, leaving him to trudge on foot until Glutton landed before Aegon and claimed him as much as the Prince of Dragonstone had claimed the dragon.
But whatever pangs the dragon brought back were eclipsed by the tidings of the rider. Aegon did not recognize the man, but if he rode a dragon he must be family. "Report, dragonrider," Aegon answered him, accepting the letter.

Edmund took a moment to gather his breath before he knelt, handing Aegon the letter. The seal bore the stamp of House Targaryen in red wax. He couldn't help sneaking a peak at his royal cousin before he bent his head in the properly respectful gesture, drilled into him all his childhood.
"The Queen sent me to inform you of the King's murder, Your Grace. This letter is in Her Grace's own hand. She was very angry when she gave it to me."

Aegon read the letter, nodding slowly. "You are not the first to reach us with these tidings," He said. "So my mother controls the capital. Are there any who have spoken out against her, or against me?"

"Not that I know, Your Grace." But the words not yet hung in the air between them. "I come as fast as I could. But...Your Grace, there was a dragon rider pursuing us. I didn't see the rider too clearly, but the rider wasn't in the city when I first came with Aelyrion. I've been living in the dragonpit most of the time, and that dragon come after I did."

Brandon grunted, "are you certain you lost them? How long ago was it you saw them?" Brandon did not like the idea of being caught napping by a hostile dragon, "Orys! Take flight, circles a few miles out. Insure no more dragons make it to our camp without our being ready. Princess Arenya and I can do shifts as well."

"It was a while ago, a day at least," Edmund explained. "I'm sure I lost him. I think he wanted to kill me."
Orys took to the skies and began to circle the camp and surrounding area, looking for a hostile dragon rider.

"Describe the dragon," Aegon told him, "Its size and coloring."

"It was black with red markings, Your Grace. It was a big bigger than the brown beast." He indicated Glutton.

All Targaryens learned about dragon lineages as children. Aegon had found the long lists of dragon names rather dull, truth be told, but he had been a diligent enough student.
"Was the rider a man or a woman?" Aegon asked. There were only two dragons of that coloring and size that Aegon was aware of, and he gave a silent prayer that it was not Daenya and her Vandaras who had thrown in with his foes.

Aegon nodded. "Your name is Edmund, is it not? You are Lord Valarr's son. You did well to carry this message through danger to me."

At the description Edmund gave, Elseyris felt a sinking feeling, like a stone dropped into water.
"I think I know who that is," she chipped in, tentatively, her expression anxious.

"Thank you, Your Grace." Edmund bowed his head and climbed to his feet. "I'm Edmund Waters, aye. Lord Valarr was my father, but I never knew him, not truly. I saw him barely once or twice in my life. He died before I claimed Aelyrion. Her Grace the Queen said he was her best friend and he died fighting for the crown. I like being a dragonrider. 'Tis better than working in the stables at Dragonstone."

"I was there when your father died," Aegon told the young man. "He was a loyal man and a great warrior." Though none of his martial skills had availed him when wildfire and Mother's Tears combined to flash cook him in his armor. Such were the Warrior's jests. "You will camp and fly with us from now on, Edmund."
He turned to Elsey. "Yes," Aegon answered, his eyes growing somewhat cool. He had surmised an answer of his own. "What manner of man is Bertram Targaryen?"

"I only met him once, but he seemed the antithesis of his father. I would not have thought he would be the sort to try and intercept a royal messenger. However, when we spoke, he did ask about who's who in King's Landing, but did not express an overt loyalty, which, in hindsight, may indicate he was for sale, so to speak."
Damn him, she thought to herself.

"If he is attacking royal messengers sent to deliver news to me, it would seem he has already been bought," Aegon replied. "He will learn the error of his false loyalties in time."

"He will," Elsey replied, darkly.
