The dragon made no objection as he approached and mounted her. She remained very still, seeming to wait for something.

The dragon soared gracefully into the air, heading up high. it was briefly dizzying and then the island and the sea were spread out below in glorious beauty as the dragon flew onwards.

Unfortunately for Vagarr, he had no clue how to handle the dragon and he found that he had no choice but to let her fly where she wished, which just happened to be out to sea.

The dragon flew for a long time. Vagarr began to feel cold from exposure to the elements. And then, eventually, they reached landfall. The dragon swooped and landed.

Vagarr estimates that he might be on Driftmark since that island is the one he thinks is closest to Dragonstone.

As they walked, Dake said "Want me to stick around while yer make yer bid to claim 'er? Don't forget a dragon's a wilful beas. May take more'n one go."

Valarr looked at him gratefully and nodded. He gave a weak smile. "Tell my family in case I fail you mean?"

"How could I do that? I don't go ter the castle no more, nor no place else," Dake replied, as if it were of no consequence. "Sides, yer father is dead, boy. I'll stay if yer want, else I'll go back ter the cave."

I'd like you to stay." said Valarr. "I've read a great deal about dragons and my father told me quite a bit about them as well. However further advice wouldn't go astray."
He looked around at the scene. "Are we close?"

"It'll be about an hour's walk," Dake said. "Dragons choose their lairs where they like, and your father's beast chose a cave a little way off. Keep yer eyes peeled, we may see her flying ahead, or another beast."

Valarr nodded. He took a deep breath. They were close then.
He checked his bag again."I'm ready. Let's go."

Dake nodded. "Aye. No sense dwelling on it. If yer see a dragon that ain't her, lie low, yer hear? Don't want to get no attention from rest of them beasts."
He stepped out confidently, indicating that Valarr should follow.

He did so, looking around carefully both at their surrounds and into the sky,

Fortunately their walk goes unchallenged. They see a dark shape flying overhead, but it is too high up to be a threat to the men. Either they have gone unnoticed, or the dragon just doesn't care. They walk for an hour or so until a cave looms ahead. "There," Dake sake. "I could not tell yer if she'll be inside at this time though."

Valarr nodded. "Any final advice"?" he asked before laying down and emptying his sack.
He felt to see if his sword was buckled correctly out of sheer force of habit rather than for the use it would provide. The makeshift saddle was also there as well as the carcass of a small sheep he had bought in the town. He lifted the carcass over his shoulder.

"Don't get too cocky," Dake warned. "Don't want to get burned alive, do yer? Stay away from her jaws if yer can. Be careful with her. All dragons have minds of their own, boy."

Viserys and a dozen of his best Valyrian-blooded warriors make their way towards the Dragonmont, with the intent of quietly acquiring an egg or two for the Doomed. The remaining troops will do everything in their power to prevent the locals from discovering their absence.
If a dragon should actually approach, Viserys will take the risk of attempting to bond with it, as his men continue their efforts.

Valarr wanted to assure Dake that the last thing he would display is cockiness. But all he could do was nod wordlessly. He hefted the sheep's carcass before striding towards the cave. Keeping to one side of the cave he peered inside trying to make out in the murky depths whether there was life inside.

There is no movement inside the cave, and Valarr could see clearly that it was empty. As he paused, considering his options, a roar split the air as the cobalt dragon landed a short distance from the cave's mouth, dropping a charred sheep to the ground as it did so. The afternoon sunlight shimmered off the blue scales, and the dragon looked up at Valarr and roared again, clearly not interested in anyone coming between it and its meal.

Realising that the dragon was hungry and that he would need to be patient, Valarr backed away from the cave mouth, so that the dragon could enter if she wished. His father had once told him that Vriskaranea was one of the more clever and cunning dragons that existed.
"Vriskaranea!" he called out. "Do you recognise me?"
He felt a bit foolish for calling out to a beast that probably didn't understand him, but he and the dragon had met before and he hoped that would light a spark in the dragon's mind.
After he had given the dragon significant space to enter the cave, he threw down the sheep carcass he had brought with him and with a knife began cutting off large chunks of raw mutton.

The dragon looked up at the boy shouting for his attention and, surprisingly, it lifted the burned sheep's carcass it had brought, tossing it into the cave before moving tentatively forward toward Valarr. It seemed more interested in the bleeding carcass he had brought, than in the one it had caught itself, despite them being equal distances from him and the one Vriskaranea had caught being already cooked.
Valarr leapt aside just in time as the dragon bathed his offering in blue flames, roasting the meat almost instantly. The dragon surged forward and began to take large bites; Valarr was only seven or eight feet away, and every few moments he thought he saw an opening to move forward and try to leap onto the dragon's back.

Carrying the whip, Valarr moved in making sure he was out of the way of the jaws and a possible burst of flame from Vriskaranea. He tossed another one of the chunks of raw mutton in front of the dragon.
"Good girl Vriskaranea" he said soothingly in a steady voice. "Remember me? I am Valarr Targaryen. My father Baelor rode you. We met when I was younger."
Still talking in a steady voice and still throwing the odd piece of mutton in front of her, Valarr saw his chance. Quickly he attempted to vault onto the dragon's back, just where the base of her neck, met her shoulders.
"Stay still Vriskaranea and finish your meal." he said in a commanding but calm voice.

Valarr's leap was true, and he landed between the dragon's blades cleanly, where the neck joined the body. The dragon bucked and shook, and released a gout of flame into the air, but it seemed half-hearted at best, and Valarr rapidly grew more confident.

Valarr patted the cobalt dragon and gave a very light touch of the whip that he knew the dragon would barely feel but would hopefully indicate to the dragon that he was in command. He threw the dragon the last chunk of mutton he had."
"Stay Vriskaranea!" he said in a more commanding tone than he had used so far.
