"Princess Sarella wouldn't listen to me either, and it will cost her," Daenya assured them. "If you take me back to her then Vandaras will kill your knights. He'll come looking for me then, and he is very good at finding what he looks for."
She pointed in the general direction of Sunspear. "Your city will burn, Ser whoever-you-are. You will burn, as will all your men here and the Princess. You do know of what happened in Oldtown, do you not? Ser Hector and his armour were burned by us, and they had weapons created purely for the purpose of slaying dragons. What defenses does Sunspear have? Some archers? Rather than blindly listen to orders you should listen to reason and give me a horse right now!"

The leader of the riders looked down at her from his greater height.
"I'll give you nothing."
"The men sent to hunt that dragon are soldiers of Dorne. They do their duty to their princess as your own soldiers would do their duty to you, if you were in Westeros and gave them a command," the grizzled cavalryman chided. "Those men know the dangers, and have undertaken them willingly. We know dragons well in Dorne, having fought them to a draw twice, and we know you cannot simply summon them to you or else you would not have bothered bribing guards and sneaking out of Sunspear when you were first arrested."
"Your brother the King will surely pay the ransom that Princess Sarella demands, and then you will be free to return home, but in the meanwhile you can either give your word that you will come peacefully, or we will have you bound and tossed over the back of a horse, and a Princess of Westeros will be carried through the streets of Sunspear like a sack of beets."

"Fine, come with me," Daenya said after a moment's deliberation. "Maybe you can even claim yourselves as brave dragon slayers that way. If you think dragons are such a small threat then surely that won't be a problem." She put her hands on her hips.
"And once you've bravely killed Vandaras I'll even come back with you."

The men glanced at one another. A couple were hesitant but this suggestion seemed to find favour with the majority. The leader looked better pleased than all the others.
"I always did want to slay a dragon. You'll give us coin when we get back to Sunspear. For now, I'll take you up on my horse and we'll go after the dragon."

"I keep my things," Daenya said, putting her purse back into her bag and putting it on her back. "It's likely Vandaras is in the mountains, so we should head there." She said, getting on the horse behind the soldier.

"Fine, then. Don't try to jump off or do anything stupid, because we'll catch you for sure." He looked down at the peasants. "And keep your mouths shut or you'll suffer for it."
He set his horse off at a comfortable trot.

When they got closer to the mountains Daenya looked about to see if she could spot any traces of Vandaras having been nearby, or if she could see any caves that he might possibly be inhabiting.

She couldn't see Vandaras as yet but they were getting close to the little village in the foothills and Daenya guessed that the people would have all fled if Vandaras had made his hair close to the village. However, she saw a path through the mountain passes that might prove worth investigating.

"We should head up that way!" Daenya called out, pointing at the path. "Though I suggest you dismount, if you want to catch him by surprise."

Her companion turned to look at her. "And let you take my horse? How stupid do you think I am? No, if it's your dragon, you go first. If we leave the horses, we leave them at the village, with one of the men to watch them at their tethers."

"As you wish," Daenya said, hopping off the horse when it had come to a stop. "I'll lead if you give me my sword back."

"You can have it back when we get closer to the dragon," he said.
They tethered their horses at the inn yard. It was only a small ramshackle old inn but the men were well known there and the innkeeper even gave each man a tankard of ale for a copper.
"Maybe we should ask the villagers if they've seen the beast," one of the men suggested.

Daenya rolled her eyes and wandered into the village, looking around to see if anyone was about.
"Hello? Anyone seen a dragon hereabouts?"

The people at first stared at her and then one woman said in a coarse voice "I seen it. It were red with black stripes. It went across the mountain pass towards the caves."
"I seen it too," a man added. "It come across the mountains and took one of me sheep. We have to hide when it comes."

"I... I am sorry," Daenya said, looking at the man. She took her purse out of her bag, took out a gold coin and threw it to him. "The dragon is mine. This is the least I can do."
She turned back to the leader of the guards. "Do you know where these caves are?"

The peasants looked at Daenya as if she were mad for throwing away a gold coin. None of them had ever seen real gold before, only coppers and sometimes silvers.
"Aye, I've heard of them. Never been up there. The passes can be dangerous for those who aren't familiar, especially at this end.""

"Then we'll have to risk it, won't we?" Daenya said, turning away from the village and heading back towards the track.
