"Damned if I know. I'm sure he knows what he's about. He and I are hardly intimate friends, I'm afraid." But Aurane watched the man with a frown.

Rhaegar rode back to where Prince Trystane waited, thinking hard.

Prince Trystane looked at Rhaegar, frowning.
"So, will you do it? The princess wishes an answer."

"I will. In return for a safe conduct throughout Dorne so to follow wherever this dragon might lead us. In writing." said Rhaegar.
"I also want all the information you can provide me about this dragon including size, habits and so on. Indeed I find it passing strange that this dragon has appeared here of all places. A riderless dragon usually wings its way east to Dragonstone or Essos."

"You will have the safe conduct you need, so long as you offer no threat to our people and go nowhere that is not essential to your quest. Furthermore, you will be accompanied by Ser Aurane and Ser Elyas at all times."
Trystane paused. "As to the dragon, I am afraid we cannot offer any comments as to its habits. The reports state that it has been sighted in the mountains to the north of here, to the west of the Broken Arm. A dragon's location is somewhat difficult to determine since it can fly, but Lady Toland recently sent a rider warning that the beast was in the location of Ghost Hill. I hear dragons are rather fond of mountains, so the Tolands and Jordaynes could be in danger from the creature."

"Hence the safe-conduct. The dragon could be anywhere, even as far as the Red Mountains. And Ser Aurane and Ser Elyas do exactly as I tell them." said Rhaegar firmly. "Not doing so could mean their lives and mine."

But Prince Trystane was scowling. He indicated to the Dornish archers, who immediately nocked arrows to their bows and aimed them in Rhaegar's diection.
"You will not command Dornishman, dragonspawn. You have no authority here. You will abide by our laws if you hope to keep your life. Need I remind you that it would be no trouble at all to take you prisoner and ransom you back to your king. A king whom you have named usurper. I am sure he would very much like to have you back. You will take the terms as offered, or we shall make sure you leave Dorne for good."
The prince's harsh tone indicated that Rhaegar might not necessarily be alive when he left Dorne, if he continued to quibble over the terms.

"There is no question of not obeying Dornish laws. Of course that will be the case." replied Rhaegar calmly. "I will be risking my life as well as theirs. In the service of Dorne. I am half Dornish, the grandson of Lord Yronwood. Your Princess wishes me to remove the dragon? I grew up surrounded by them, raised one, flew one, fought in battle with one. Have your men had such experience with dragons?"

Prince Trystane's hands clenched into fists.
"They have not, but they are Dornishmen, loyal and true. And you are not. You seem very eager to tell us that you are Dornish by blood, but here you come trying to upset the order of things. I will urge you not to forget that you are a visitor to our land, and uninvited. Now, will you seek the dragon or must I clap you in irons instead?"

Rhaegar glanced at the Marcher lords who had come to Sunspear to support him. He wondered whether they were cowed by the Prince's threat to clap him in irons.
"I have already stated I will seek the dragon. Lords Yronwood, Fowler and Martyne have indicated they will accompany me."

"Well and good then. See it done. Ser Aurane will report to me on your conduct throughout the expedition," Prince Trystane remarked. "May the Crone lend you wisdom, Rhaegar Targaryen."
Rhaegar's companions wisely held their tongues as the prince spoke.

Prince Rhaegar and the remains of his dragon-hunting party approach the walls of Sunspear. Behind them on a cart was the head of the dragon Vanderas, with the trussed Princess Daenya seated nearby. Ser Olyvar rode at the rear beside the litter of his father Lord Anders, while Ser Elyas was carried on another litter along with a number of other injured Dornishmen. Lord Yronwood rode beside his grandson as did Lord Osmund.

The party halted before the gate.
"We bring the head of Vanderas the dragon to the Princess of Dorne, as she commanded." called Rhaegar up to the guards on the battlements.

The guards looked, saw the head of the dragon and shouted "Open the gates!" The great gates swung open. "Advance on to Sunspear. Princess Sarella will want to see you."
A runner was dispatched to Sunspear to inform the princess of the procession's arrival. The carts would force them to move more slowly.

The procession moved slowly through the outermost gate...and into the city, the head of the great dragon Vandaras drawing the eyes of any onlookers.
Rhaegar noted that the path through the gates and led in a straight line, up a slight hill to two more massive gates, beyond which he presumed, lay Princess Sarella's palace.

As they passed, Rhaegar's group heard intermittent cheers at the sight of the dragon's head. It was an encouraging sign. They passed through the next gate, with the cheers and exclamation occasionally growing louder, then, finally, as the final gate loomed ahead, a boy of eleven or twelve ran towards them. "Can I touch it? A dragon killed my father."

Rhaegar smiled at the boy, as he waved to the crowd.
"Briefly my lad. We have a Princess to meet."

The boy moved forward and touched the dragon with wide, wondering eyes. "It's so big. I didn't think it would be so big." He spat on the corpse.
A couple of Rhaegar's companions looked scandalised, though others nodded approvingly. Most pretended to ignore the boy. Fortunately he skipped off again crying "It's dead, it's dead!"

Rhaegar continued smiling and waving. He understood the boy's response. It was what have would have done to his father's killer Maegor and his dragon had there been an opportunity to do so.
He said as much to his grandfather riding beside him.

Lord Yronwood nodded. "I can't blame you there. Princess Sarella is like to do the same with the head when she sees it."
