"Indeed, if you'll excuse me then, I'll see about my tasks." Brandon gave a bow, and departed, headed towards where the prisoners had been chained.
He approached the magister from house Forellin first.
He waited outside the cell bars, and watched the man without speaking.

OOC - Forellin died with the ship, or did you arrest one of his male relations from the boat?

OOC - you have the brother of the dead Ormollen, who instigated the plot, and three unnamed magisters who were involved in the plot in some as yet unspecified manner, but Magister Forellin, the main co-conspirator, went down with the ship

The man met his gaze with a scowl. "Why do you stare so? It is most unnerving."

"Tell me of how you became involved in this plot. His grace the Prince is looking to see if there is any extenuating information that may warrant that you be spared." Brandon replied.

"I owed the Ormollen's a favour after they helped my son out of a spot of bother a few years ago. A problem with a woman, as it happens. Ormollen obliged me to lend money to his purpose. He said that your prince killed his brother."

"That is true, after his brother threatened to have him murdered," Brandon replied. "What of the others? What is their involvement?"

""My friend here owed the Ormollens money, so he was obliged to help with the men who did the job. And that fellow, well, he was a close friend of Ormollen's." The man made an obscene gesture with his fingers to indicate the nature of the relationship. "Naturally he wished to avenge his...friend."

Brandon grunted, "you'll understand why owing this man money does not strictly absolve you of responsibility for your actions."

The magister who owed money looked straight at Brandon and said "There is a sacred bond between the lender and the man who borrows. I could not break it."

"But the responsibility for putting yourself into his debt belongs to you," Brandon replied.

"The past is the past and cannot be changed. Men make mistakes. We cannot all be as wealthy as some of our friends."
Behind them, the magister who had allegedly been Ormollen's lover was weeping noisily.

Brandon, who personally owned nothing just grunted. "And you, he said of the weeper, " have you any extenuating circumstances?"

It was hard to understand him because he wept so much and so loudly, but eventually Brandon realised that he was saying "You killed my love, the delight of my life." He then dissolved into a fresh burst of tears.

"Had you responded like a real man with a legitimate challenge," Brandon replied coolly, "then I would have respected the depth of your emotions, even I do not understand their source." He sniffed slightly, with mild distaste as he scanned the room, "But as I can hear it, none of you have the least cause mitigating your cowardly behavior. Unless anyone has anything further to add, I shall recommend you all be hanged."

Ormollen's lover continued to weep. The man with the debts looked like he was about to faint but the other man, and Ormollen's brother, both looked at Brandon with hatred in their eyes.
"Volantis does not subject its noble sons to die by the rope. If we must die, we die under the laws of Volantis."

"And how does Volantis kill its nobility?" Brandon asked.

"Most open their veins in the bath," the man said, very pale, but not trembling. "Some choose to fall on their own swords. But the bath is cleaner and easier."
Loud sobbing from Ormollen's lover continued and the debtor began to weep as well.

Brandon drew his blade and extended it.
"If any of you would deign to fall upon a blade I shall oblige you." He said, "if you can bring yourself to die honorably."

The debtor stopped his weeping and fell back with a shudder. "The blade! But that is so...messy! Ugh, the blood!"
The man who had explained Volantene customs, the one whose son had got into trouble, looked at the blade with a thoughtful expression as he steeled his courage. "The bath would be preferrable, to be sure, but I suppose the blade will serve. Is there no hope, then?"

Brandon raised his eyebrow. "Hope of what?" He asked.

"Of life. I am in no great hurry to die, as it happens. Come now, Forellin is dead, and most of us were merely compelled to be a party to this venture." He glanced at the two men who were weeping and begging for mercy, while Ormollen's brother sat stony-faced and silent as if nobody were present. "Take a look at those two fools. Neither one of them will go quietly to their deaths, I promise you. Do you want to hear their screams and and sobs as you lie abed every night? I know I would not. "

Brandon sighed. Every time one of these foreigners showed some semblance of honor, it disappeared as quickly as it showed itself. He sheathed his sword.
"I assure you it won't trouble me," Brandon replied, "I suggest you get right with your gods."
He left.
