"Two, three, no more. Nobody else knew of the incident in question," Ormollen explained. "None of the families did."

"A most useful confession, thank you," Brandon said. "Let us wait for your ship to arrive, shall we?" He said. He scowled and looked around for the Volantenes.

He could see the Volantene ships heading towards them. Meanwhile, the Lysene ship was breaking up rather badly and would soon be sunk below the waves. But at least the screaming had stopped.

They had taken a rather foolish choice to defy the dragons and Brandon had limited sympathy, considering that the women and children had even preserved.
When the ship reached them Brandon motioned for the men to be taken aboard and clapped in irons and the women to be secured more respectfully in one of the cabins.
Then he remounted Aerion and awaited word from the Lysene.

When the appointed time came, a small entourage appeared with a white flag and the herald announced that three of the magisters had been detained but that two of them - Ormollen and Forellin - had fled the city with their families, which Brandon already knew.

Brandon nodded, "Those who fled were slain or captured," he explained with no additional information.
"You'll turn the three magisters over, and you've prepared the property auction list for examination?" he asked. "I'm sure we'd all prefer to get this concluded as swiftly as possible, and get back to whatever it is we do."

"It will be done. You will oblige us by attending the magisterial palace to conclude proceedings?" The herald asked. "We do not conduct our business in the street."

"Are you certain that's strictly necessary?" Brandon replied, "Our last visit to Lys was less than cordial, and I think it would be well to avoid any unnecessary exposure to the crowds of Lys, who may be wrongly impassioned against us."
He cleared his throat, "I'm certain proud Lys has a warship of note which can be rowed out abreast of Volantis' own flagship, and we can bring out tables and chairs and such. Many an honorable peace has been signed on the deck of such ships, and it would not be thought inappropriate, I am certain."

"That would serve, but you must swear to keep your beast well away from the vessel. Do the families of the Magisters forellin and Ormollen survive? Women and children ought not to remain a prisoner. They are our people and we must protect them."

"Dragons only destroy what we deign them to destroy," Brandon said, although this was not strictly speaking true with sheep and cattle it was with naval shipping, "But it can be so if you insist" Brandon knew that Aerion would not go far without him, nor Glutton without Aegon, since he was too lazy to fly further than strictly necessary.
"Orys, stay airborne, and keep an eye out" he whispered.
"The women and children are yours if they wish to return to Lys, provided none of the women play a political role of any kind." He was unsure if like Volantis some of the women might be magisters.
"Or they can go wherever else they desire, as suits them."

"We shall proceed as you suggest," the herald announced.
Since none of the women on the rowboat were magisters, simply wives and mothers, they were allowed to return to Lys, while the flagship was set up for the meeting. Soon enough, Brandon was met by two magisters who had elected themselves spokesmen for the others, with various clerks in attendance as well. The clerks produced the necessary documentation for Brandon to study.
Meanwhile, the three magisters who were also said to have had some complicity in the poisoning, were brought onto the ship by an armed guard, all three of them wearing golden fetters. They were confined to a cabin.
Orys remained airborne with his dragon, to watch out for trouble.

Brandon tried to make sense of the sums involved in a general sense, as the accountants did their work.

As far as Brandon can tell, everything seems to be in order. He has no reason to believe they are cheating him with the figures.

OOC - they are wealthy people so fairly high but on the lower side of that so they are giving up the lowest amount they can without it looking suspicious, if that makes sense?

OOC: eh okay let's try in these terms 1-10 with 1 being a decent tourney prize and 10 being pays off the kingdom's entire debt, with plenty to spare.

Brandon grunted with satisfaction. When the work was done and the list of figures presented he nodded and let them discuss the issue of how the funds would be transferred.
"That concludes matters satisfactorily then. Unless you good gentlemen have anything further?"

"Only this," said the spokesman. "What will you do with the imprisoned Magisters? Forellin is dead, but what of the new Magister Ormollen and the three others?"

"What concern is that of yours?" Brandon asked,"Their fate is Prince Aegon's to decide, in consultation with the Volantenes whose law they violated in plotting our murder in their fair city."

"They are citizens of Lys. Their fate must be our concern too," the magister insisted. "We have complied with your wishes. The least you could do is consult with us regarding the fate of those who have endangered our land. They have wronged Lys too."

"They are not citizens of Lys any longer," Brandon reminded the man, "You have voted to expel them, if you recall. You owe them nothing. Prince Aegon is a just man, and he will do justice to them, whatever that will entail, it is not my place to say. I can tell you that I intend to question them seriously regarding their involvement, which I will be doing presently, as soon we are finished here."

"Their families will deserve an explanation of their fate, if nothing else," the man answered. "Would you not wish the same, if it were your father or brother? As to the rest, I believe we are done."

"I would not find myself in their place, as I do not comport with assassins," Brandon replied disdainfully, "but in any case, a dispatch can be sent detailing the results, when his grace makes his decision. There is no need to be cruel to their survivors, as you rightly point out."

"Indeed. No man can choose his family," the magister pointed out. "But that will be most suitable. There are precedents and procedures we need to follow, records to keep. But let us have done with this sordid affair."
