"Would that that could be true, but that is not how things work in Westeros," Elseyris said quietly, wiping away her tears.
"It is alright, Sergio, really. I would rather know what happened. You were right to tell me."
She exhaled heavily.
"It is just... I came close to finding some happiness. I had hope of a better future. But it was taken away, and all I have had since is Trajan's cruelty. I haven't been wearing high necks and long sleeves for fashion, it is to hide the scars."
She glanced at her mud-caked dress, fiddling with a loose thread on one sleeve.

"The man is simply a villain." Sergio replied but then added, "There is an old trick the Braavosi know. It is called tasting the wind. And I can tell you this the wind it is changing. Sailors know to take cover when changes. Those unprepared can get lost into the sea."

"I don't think I understand," said Elsey, her expression quizzical. "Would you be able to explain?"

"Your land is about to catch aflame. And when cities burn even Kings can become tinder." Sergio replied evenly.

Elsey looked at him fearfully.
"Can it be saved?"

"When a leg becomes infected sometimes it must be removed to save the entire body." Sergio answered her.

"But, what of the people? Are innocents to be purged? Why should a whole country suffer for the sins of the few?"

"Because of dragons. The Lord's of your land reach to high. And in all the ancient tales those who teach too high are burned by the sun." Sergio replied his hand squeezing her shoulder.

"Why are you telling me this?" Elsey asked, feeling deeply uneasy.

"I want you to be prepared." Sergio replied, "I do not want anything to harm you." He studied her closely and smiled slightly, "Do not worry... you have already kissed the fire, and been forged into steel."

"I think I would have recalled kissing a fire," Elsey joked, her expression lightening somewhat. "Though, of course, that was another of your Braavosi metaphors, yes?"

"Indeed. We love or metaphors in Braavos. Being opaque is a national pursuit." Sergio replied and then refilled her wine goblet.

"How do people ever manage to say what they mean?" Elsey asked, nodding in thanks for the drink.

"On the contrary, every word we say is weighed and measured before released. So even if it is unclear the words hold more truth then what escape your full lips." Sergio winked at her.

"You are being very flirtatious with me, My Lord," Elsey said, inquisitively. "I thought you were... close to my mother."

"I posed as her lover as cover. I needed to be close to her and her family to plot her escape." Sergio chuckled low in his throat. "The number of hours we spent in one of my inns making false sex noises while arranging her escape were long indeed."

"Oh," Elsey responded, finding the visual image a little embarrassing. "That is a little more detail than I required, but I am, at least, glad you did not break her heart."

Sergio smiled at the slight color in her cheeks. "You need not be so prudish around me. Nothing you can say or do would shock me."

"I believe you," Elsey chuckled. "I'm sure even the most wanton strumpets in Westeros seem prudish and demure to you."
She stood up, placing her goblet on the small bedside table.
"Where is this fresh dress you mentioned? We can continue this discussion while I get changed."

"Of course let me grab it." Sergio walked to a wardrobe and opened it slowly. He eyed her body once more before pulling out a scarlet dress in a provocative Braavosi style. "I think this will fit you perfectly." He walked back over to her and presented the dress.

Elsey looked at it with something akin to trepidation.
"It is a nice dress, Sergio, though I have a concern," said Elsey, her brow furrowed as she studied the low neckline and open back. "I am not sure if it will... look right... on me. It seems to be more for someone with less... scarring."
She looked at him sadly, painful memories surfacing.

"I am willing to bet that you in this dress would make my mouth water." Sergio replied. Studying her, "Scars do not detract from beauty, but only make the woman seem stronger. Did I not say you could not shock me."

"You are very kind," Elsey said, with a shy smile.
She glanced around for a screen, but saw none. Despite feeling self-conscious under Sergio's gaze, she trusted him, so she gently took the dress from him, stroking the luxurious fabric, admiring it's regal red colour. It was much more revealing than what she normally wore, and she worried about what people might say about her in it. She hated hiding how Trajan treated her, but she also hated fielding prying questions.
Nevertheless, she laid it out on the bed, turning her back to Sergio, and undoing the delicate sea green ribbons that fastened her dress from the throat to the waist, letting the mud-caked fabric pool on the floor around her feet, slipping out of her boots at the same time.
This revealed to Sergio the three long, angry scars that ran along Elseyris' back, two carved in opposite diagonals from shoulder blades to flanks, the third directly vertical, from the nape of her neck to the base of her spine, like a cruel, red star across her flesh. There was the old crossbow bolt wound in her shoulder, which he had seen before, when they played cyvasse together in her room when she was incapacitated. The bolt wound that had caused her to be bedridden in the first place was visible in the flesh just above her ankle. The most recent-looking marks were a ragged bolt wound that showed on both sides of her left elbow, and the long, deep scar that ran parallel to her jawline, along the side of her neck.
She reached for the red dress, and began to pull it on.
