"I cannot complain about my experiences with women, with one exception of course. However when it comes to someone special," he paused thoughtfully, "My wife used to be, however she did not take my return to Westeros very well. Things were... tense before I left." Surprised at his honesty to this young lady, Bertram felt at ease around her.
As she played with her hair and smiled at him Bertram couldn't help but feel an attraction to this beautiful young creature.
"I will also freely admit that I am enjoying your company more than the majority of others." He smiled at Elsey, meeting her gaze. "It makes me happy to know that your night is also going better than planned, I had encountered the fashion conversation at the Keep when I was looking for clothes to wear tonight. The fuss and insistence on what I had to wear... It was dreadful."
Bertram sat up and removed his stiff jacket. "One thing about Westerosi fashion has not changed. The more uncomfortable it is to wear, the more fashionable it will be." He leaned back down on the cushions, clearly more comfortable.

"I am sorry to hear that, though I suppose I can understand her viewpoint. Not only having to see her beloved leave, but to know he was going to a dangerous place. I have experienced a similar sadness myself recently."
She smiled as Bertram decried the impracticality of Westerosi fashion.
"Do you have children too?"

"Too?" Bertram looked surprised, "You have children? They are blessed with a beautiful mother!"
He drank from his rum, "They must be adorable! What are their names?" He leaned closer.

Elsey realised that her question had been worded poorly, and laughed.
"Hah, no, that was not what I meant. I do not have children yet. That is something of a... complicated situation. I meant do you have children with your wife... or, anyone else, I suppose."

"Ahhh, I see." Bertram nodded. "I have a young son. He is a good boy, even Vraxor has somewhat taken to him."
"How about you? Do you wish to one day have some of your own?"

Elsey smiled as Bertram spoke of his son.
"I am sure that, if he is anything like you, he will grow up to be a good man too."
When he asked her about children, a pensive expression crossed her face.
"There was someone... with whom I dearly wanted to have a family, but I fear we may never have that opportunity. The powers that be have seen fit to forbid us from being together. And, well, given my husband's character, I would not wish any child to have him as a father. I do not have a choice in that matter though."
She trailed off, taking a long drink of her brandy. Then, she told Bertram what she had been afraid to repeat to anyone;
"He told me, on our wedding night, that for every month I was not with child, he would cut off one of my fingers."
Though she said it in a detached way, he could see the spectre of fear in her eyes.

"What a wretched man!" Bertram held one of her hands with both of his and looked at it.
"Your fingers are much too dainty to be treated like that. How long before he returns, if I may ask?"

"Well, he is hunting my brother, Rhaegar, so it is uncertain when he shall return. He could be gone for some time, depending on how well my brother has hidden himself," Elsey responded, giving the palm of one of Bertram's hands a little stroke with her thumb as he held her hand.
