"Well then, it would seem that there are not so much stupid people, as differing kinds of intelligence." Elseyris responded, enjoying the thought exercise. "Though I would say that love, the very thing that blinds clever men and women alike to so many dangers, is possibly the most dangerous."
Though she did not intend it, her eyes belied a knowing sorrow;
"After all, those who know what you love know exactly how best to harm you."
As the song ended, she again steadied herself by gently holding onto Bertram's arm, giving an embarrassed, yet amused smile.
"My kindness is ever yours, Bertram," Elsey said, sincerely. "You strike me as a good man. I may not know everything, but I hear and observe much, and will answer any question you may have to the best of my ability."
She glanced around quickly;
"Of course, bearing in mind that not all matters are fit for discussion in a crowded room."

Bertram was taken aback by her candidness, "Would your shadow let us go off to a solitary spot? Would that be safe?" He gestured nonchalantly towards Ser Bryan, "I would not want to get either of us into trouble."
Bertram thought for a moment before saying, "To be honest, I am unsure of what I would even ask you about. It has been so long, too long. Although I would not mind a moment of rest to catch my breath, shall we adjourn?"
Bertram grabbed a carafe of apple and cinnamon brandy, "Let us tell Lady Kesi so that she may join us if she would like, I still am eager to learn this native dance she spoke of! Having two beautiful women on my arm is something I would like to prolong for as long as possible!"

"I am rather good at being unseen when I put my mind to it, My Lord," Elseyris replied, quietly. "I would certainly appreciate a little rest too. The rooms upstairs are free to use for people who wish privacy. I shall go find Kesi, why don't you and that carafe go up and choose a room?"
Elseyris approached Kesi with a smile.
"Bertram has invited you to join us for a more private chat upstairs. He still wants to learn the exotic dance of your homeland too. Would you like to come up?"

Kesi smiled and nodded.
"I am being sorry Elseyris, I am not being so great when there are many people like this." She found herself explaining, and looked a little uncomfortable. "Maybe in private will be being much better."

"Yes, I am the same. No need to apologise, Kesi," Elsey said gently. She offered her arm for Kesi to take, leading her to the stairs.
"Let us go have ourselves some peace from this."
Once they were upstairs, Elsey quietly looked for Bertram, eventually finding the room he chose, and smiled broadly to him as she & Kesi entered.
"Now that we have more comfortable surroundings, we can enjoy one another's company with greater ease."
She strolled over to where the decanter of brandy had been placed, and poured drinks for the three of them.

Bertram thanked Lady Elseyris for filling his glass and motioned for the two women to sit with him.
"It is nice to be away from the music and crowds, I can relax a bit." Bertram said, happily sinking back into the soft chair and enjoying his brandy,
"It was quite a stroke of luck that I encountered you both on this lovely evening. I fear I would otherwise be celebrating alone downstairs. Do either of you go to social functions often?" He asked. He knew that times had been tough since the war and was curious to know if the kingdom had been attempting any motions towards increasing the populace's morale. This seemed like such an unhappy city, much like it had been when he left.
It was not difficult for Bertram to see that while both of his friends seemed to enjoy his company, they both had deep sadness within them. Their eyes betrayed it, he noticed the same look on his own face in the mirror for a long time after he was sent away, It took him a long time to be happy in Lorath. Upon realizing this he began to chuckly pleasantly, "I'm sorry," he said between breaths, "I just noticed something we all have in common!" He continued to chuckle, "We are all haunted by something in our lives." He began to calm down a bit and explained, "I don't know details for you both, and I apologize for laughing, it is not necessarily funny, but now it makes sense why we all get along so well."
He hoped that they did not take offense, he truly found it somewhat amusing, hopefully laughing about it and showing them that they were not alone would help ease their minds a bit.

"It is nice to have a little respite," Elsey agreed. "I think it fortunate too, that our paths have crossed. It is good to make a new friend, and to save someone from drinking alone," she added, with a playful smile.
"I go to quite a few social functions, though my ability to entertain varies, depending on my health," she said, somewhat shyly, unsure if the euphemism was one her companions knew. "I did not think I would be up to dancing at this event, but I am glad to have managed it. Without your encouragement, I might have just hid in a corner and gotten drunk."
When Bertram laughed, and then explained himself, Elsey gave a sad smile;
"Multiple somethings, but you have the right of it. It sounds like you might want to share."
She looked kindly into his eyes, before taking a drink of her brandy.

"My Lady Elseyris! You should wear those with pride," He signaled to the injuries he knew about, "Those are badges of respect, difficulties conquered." Bertram rested his hand gently on her injured leg, "Never let battle scars make you think anything less than proof of your strength and determination."
Removing his hand he continued, "I believe I will be attending many of the same social functions as yourself, now that I have come back into the Kingdom's mind and eye, there will of course be responsibilities," he said the last word with a long exaggeration, as a child would at being told to take the trash out, "Consider me a dancing and drinking partner!"
Bertram thought about telling her of his past, of his son, but this was much too good of a night to be brought down with such thoughts. "Someday we will all share our sad stories, but tonight is not for that! I did not intend on bringing up such somber matters. We should be reveling in our wonderful new companionship!"
Bertram drank more of his brandy.
Turning to Kesi Bertram inquired about her stunning blue hair, it looked so natural that he believed it to be natural and did not ask if she dyed it. "I do not believe I have ever seen such a beautiful shade of blue, you are lucky to have such a unique form of self-distinction. Lady Elseyris too, your mother's blood must be extremely powerful to dilute that of a dragon! I am stuck with the eyes and hair, but at least I have a better temperament that most of my kin, I had hoped that it would be different when I returned, but at least there is now one cheerful Targaryen in this place."

"I have not yet conquered the... difficulty that is responsible for all but one of my seven scars, I have failed in that. I have only barely survived it. But, when my beloved sees them, that difficulty's days will be numbered," Elseyris said quietly, but with a strange, dark certainty. Although she rejoined the less sombre topics, something of that thought remained in her eyes and voice.
"It is true that I am the least 'Targaryen' in appearance of my siblings. My mother is Dornish, but my brother and sister display almost none of the Dornish characteristics. Perhaps the dragon blood was mostly used up by the time it got to me, so I was left with blonde hair instead of silver, brown eyes instead of violet," she chuckled, with a shrug. "I don't mind though, I am not averse to being different."

Kesi had clammed up a little when he mentioned the sadness that she strove to hide, although Elsey knew a little of Kesi's past she did not trust strangers and tried to cover it up. She smiled though.
"I was saying to Lady Elseyris that I am not really being social... social..." She struggled to find the word that she wanted, but waved the difficulty away with a hand. "I was being told to come here by someone that is being close to me. Maybe they will be found at some point in evening." Kesi then shrugged.
"Blue was being colour chosen in Pentos." She said, taking a stray strand and twisting it round her finger as if thinking. "I am thinking that gold is being too common."

Bertram was taken aback by Elseyris's vehemence, "If you are alive then you have not failed."
"I apologize if I am keeping you from anyone!" He said to Kesi, "And you are right, everywhere I turn there are masses of gold hair and violet eyes." Bertram leaned back and sighed.
It appeared that there was very little to talk about that didn't involve some kind of unhappiness with these two. Things had not gotten much better since the time of his father.

Elsey sensed a weariness in Bertram's sigh, and smiled;
"Do not be disheartened, My Lord. You speak true. I am told that a dragon need not apologise, but I do so if I have dampened the discussion. I should know better than to talk of troubles, especially when you have been so gracious and friendly. Please, forgive my complete lack of grace in this matter. You said you had questions. Please, go ahead."

Bertram smiled again, "You have no need to apologize, I had forgotten how being around the Crown changes everything. Besides, as I'm sure you can guess, it takes more than that to dishearten me. We are not at court, we are friends sitting down to a discussion, and if troubles are all there is to talk about, then let us do so."
"My questions are frivolous, just a who's who in King's Landing, positions and titles have changed hands many times."
Bertram thought for a little before finishing his glass and pouring another, "But tell me, my ladies, could one such as I help with any of your unhappiness? It vexes me so to see such beautiful faces downcast."

"I suppose, if a week is a long time in politics, twenty years must be practically aeons," mused Elsey, also finishing her drink and replenishing it. "I would happily tell you the names of the city's prominent figures, though some I know more about than others."
Elsey smiled gently at his offer;
"You are very kind, Bertram. If you happen to have a spare dragon, I would gladly take it off your hands," she laughed. "Or if you can turn horrible husbands into dashing princes!"
She let out a small, sardonic laugh, taking a big drink of brandy and leaning back against a pile of cushions, clearly starting to feel the relaxing and inhibition-lessening effects of the strong liquor.

"It feels like a lifetime... Although I suppose it has been." He thought back to the day he was sent from King's Landing, remembering just how young he was.
"I am sad to say that I am the only dashing prince that I know of," Bertram laughed loudly, "But hopefully better than nothing!" His mood instantly brightened a bit at the joke. "I must say my dear Lady Elseyris, you are quite the breath of fresh air." Bertram drank a bit more brandy and chuckled again briefly.
"Tell me who you think would be important for me to know," He appealed to the two, "That will make it more interesting. But if any of us begin to bore then we must change the subject. I am quite enjoying your company."

"You did not mention being a prince!" exclaimed Elseyris, looking in surprise at Bertram. "And you have allowed me to be so ill-mannered!"
In mock horror, she gave his arm a playful jab.
"Wait," she said, sitting up a little, her mind at work. "I'll tell you about the who's who in a moment, but first, if you are a prince, where are you in the family tree? Who are your parents?"

Bertram was shocked but the jig was up and there was really very little reason to hide the truth, the king and his men already knew who he was, along with the queen.
"I am actually the son of Maegor the First. I believe he was called 'The Cruel'." He then rubbed his arm as if he were injured, stood, and did his most formal courtly bow. "Uncle to His Royal Heighness."

Elsey pushed herself up and returned the bow;
"Your Grace. Forgive my previous over-familiarity. Had I known, I would have treated you with better respect."
There was a look on her face that said she suspected he didn't mind, though, as they reclined again, she eyed him a little differently;
"Now I understand what you meant when you said your father was similar to my husband," she said quietly, thoughtfully. "Was your father's reputation your reason for hiding your status?"

"Please do not treat me any differently," He gently pleaded, "I have not been a real prince for much longer than three years, I have found that it brings more friends." He was unexpectedly enjoying this turn of conversation. "And please call me Bertram, in fact, my friends call me Bertie, and I happily consider you my friends." He gestured to his companions.
"And yes, that was the main reason, however I also did not wish to flaunt my status in front of my nephew. There are many benefits to being anonymous around King's Landing." Bertram sighed, "However it was only a matter of time. There were enough in the throne room when I arrived who knew my name."
He sipped some more brandy, "Sometimes I think that my exile was not as much of the punishment it was meant to be. I have learned that no matter how unfair life can be, the fact that you are still alive is something to cherish." He then stood, did a mock bow and then pulled a pillow from behind Elseyris and sat on the ground with a laugh.

"Very well then, I will not treat you differently... Bertie. Since we are now officially friends, you may both call me Elsey, if you wish," she grinned, shifting cushions and throws so that the three of them could recline close together in comfort.
"Your plot thickens, my friend. What was your crime?"

Bertram sighed, of course she would have asked that.
"I must warn you that it is not a glorious, noble, or even violent story." He looked up innocently, trying to dodge the embarrassing question. After seeing Elsey's persistence he buckled.
"I was young and the blood was pumping like dragonfire through my veins. When I had turned twenty years of age I decided to prove my," He searched for the right words, "Princely prowess, to my father's favorite concubine. We had a very... passionate night. and several more for the next three years. When we were finally caught he decided to send me away for two decades, believing me to either die or return to serve him."

"I'm sorry, that was tactless of me. It was not what I was expecting," Elsey said, slowly, after listening to Bertram's story.
She looked at him for a moment, sipping her drink.
"I don't think any less of you. The heart is hard to control at times. Twenty years of exile sounds rather severe to me, for that act. I thought you must have murdered a lot of important people or something!"

Bertram shrugged, "My father was not known for his kindness or fairness. Although I would much rather he sent me away than take my head."
He drank some more brandy and smiled as the warmth spread through his body.
"I have learned many lessons but the most important one was that the ordeal was all worth it," Bertram grinned mischievously. "The mysteries of the flesh can be difficult to unravel without an experienced guide." He leaned back and smiled with the memory.

"Well, it would be a shame to lose such a handsome head," said Elseyris, followed by a tipsy giggle.
