Elseyris was surprised by the warmth of his greeting, but she smiled broadly and blushed as he kissed her hand.
"Well, you could say I am a fairly new recruit," she laughed a little. "I have only been in one battle, so far."
"I am Lady Elseyris Targaryen. You have the look of the dragon-blooded yourself, good sir, but I do not know your face. Might I have your name?"

Bertram stood up straight and laughed when he saw the child's cheeks grow rosy with a genuine smile.
"Very few know my face anymore Lady Elseyris. I am Bertram Targaryen, I have been away from Westeros for a long time. Most likely since before you were a thought in your parents' mind. Speaking of, may I ask who they are? Perhaps I knew them when I was a younger man."
He was surprised at the young dragon-blood, few and far between were the Targaryen seed without the visible traits. She must be a half-blood like myself, and whoever was the mix had strong blood to dilute a dragon's.

"Well met, Bertram," Elsey said, with a respectful nod. She stiffened a little at the question of her parentage, despite it's inevitability. Her gaze flickered downwards for a moment, then she looked back up to speak.
"I am the youngest child of the late Lord Aenar Targaryen, and Lady Jeyne Yronwood, of Dorne."
She felt a pang of anxiety in her heart as she searched his face for a response, waiting to see if the familiar look of disdain would emerge.

Bertram's eyes grew solemn, but his smile never flickered.
"Aenar was a good boy in the old days, we got along well on the few occasions my father let us meet. I am sorry for your loss my Lady. My ne..."
He let the sentence draw off as if in memory. There was no need to mention who his nephew was, she seemed like a good girl, why give her cause to hate him for things that were not his fault or concern.
"I remember Aenar well, although I fear your mother was not in the picture back then. Well, it is a pleasure to see you alive and as well as can be expected, I see two eyes, and ears, a nose, mouth, and all of your fingers. I consider you to be quite lucky, though you may not agree!"
Bertram said this with both honesty and care in his voice. In his day... He did not want to think about what his father would have done to this poor young thing. Grabbing a drink from a passing servant he raised his glass towards Lady Elseyris slightly with another smile.
"To family, what're ya gonna do?" He winked and lightly touched his glass with Lady Elseyris's and enjoyed a mouthful of the best wine he had ever tasted.

"To family," Elsey said solemnly, quietly, joining him in the long drink of wine. She seemed to linger on a thought, and smiled a little;
"I can't imagine father as a boy."
Her expression shifted again, becoming somewhat cool, and out came her practiced words;
"Thank you for your kind words, but do not apologise. My father drank too much, too often, but that does not excuse him of being a traitor. I am only regretful that his children must live under the shadow of his folly."
She shuffled her feet awkwardly, but straightened up, shaking her head a little as she put on a smile again;
"But you are right, I am alive and intact, save for a few battle scars. That is to be valued and celebrated."
She took another big drink of wine.
"May I ask how long you have been away? What adventures you were having, in which exotic places?"

"History is written by the victorious. I forget who said it, but they were right." Bertram could now understand her urge to be a warrior and her inability to hide her sadness.
"I have been away for twenty years at the exotically bland and dreary Lorath. There were few adventures to be had, I mainly studied my weapons, my languages, and my dragon. The best part was the freedom to ride every day. There were also some times where I got to joust with other dragon riders, sometimes we would need to defend against some brutish and unplanned attack by idiots. It will be nice to return to the lively world of men, although have been here before, we will see how long it lasts. you know as well as any that this kind of life can be worse than death."
Bertram's voice was filled with hope and excitement, he could already tell how much more intense this world was than the one he knew. He missed excitement.
"By the way, do you know who or where our host is? I believe his name is Sergio Delinaal. He seems like quite the benefactor for throwing such a wonderful event!"

"If it was so dreary, why spend twenty years there?" Elsey asked, her head tilting quizzically, somewhat amused. With that motion, unknown to her, the bandage around her throat became slightly exposed above the edge of the dress' high neck.
"Yes, Lord Sergio Delinaal is a generous and noble man. He was kind enough to visit me for cyvasse games a while ago, bringing me books and such while I was confined to my rooms, due to a leg injury. Of course, aside from my own observations, it is clear that he has the traditional Braavosi talent and passion for revelry. He has been fleeting around, looking after his guests, and keeping up his own part in the quest to drink and be merry beyond confusion," Elseyris laughed. "I'm sure he will greet you properly soon."

"Because, young warrior, as any good soldier and royal know," Bertram gently lifted her collar to hide the bandage as he spoke, "Orders are orders, and they must be followed. A leg injury? You seem to have many injuries for someone so young, especially for a soldier who has only seen one battle." There was no suspicion in his voice and no concern, he had been around many young soldiers, he used to be one, his tone was of casual conversation.
"The Braavosi always did know how to throw down for a night of revelry and debauchery, it is good to see that this has not changed!"
Taking another sip of his delicious wine, Bertram reminded himself that he must keep his wits about him, at least for now. Perhaps later in the night he could afford to unwind a bit more.
"Lady Elseyris, what weapons have hardened your hands so? How long have you been practicing?" Bertram's voice was that of pleasant interest once more, he liked weapons and fighting, knew them well.

She flinched a little as his hand reached out to her throat, but allowed him to adjust the fabric, albeit with a look of embarrassment.
"Let us say that I have a... volatile marriage." she said coolly, being far more honest than she would have been, had she not had quite a lot of wine and brandy. She fidgeted with her two pendants, a subconscious comfort.
"I have trained with a flail, on and off dragonback, since I was nine, though I know a little of hand-to-hand as well," she answered, with a look of pride.
"What is your weapon of choice, My Lord Bertram?"

Bertram blanched at the comment,"My father was one such as that, it's a disgrace to our gender and status. I apologize for making you feel uncomfortable." Then finished his wine, reaching for another glass of something new.
"The flail! A risky but powerful weapon, very impressive. How do you enjoy your hand-to-hand instructor?" He expressed with interest, "I have been thinking about getting better at brawling. My weapons are the spear and bow, I too enjoy being on dragonback, so I prefer weapons that are more suited to aerial combat. May I inquire about your dragon? Were you given and egg or did you bond your own?" Bertram was very interested in Dragons, Lady Elseyris could tell.
Bertram began sipping on his second drink of the night, a delicious brandy.

"It is alright," Elsey replied, "You did not make me feel uncomfortable."
She too drained her glass, and joined Bertram in filling her glass with Tyroshi pear brandy.
"I was... not taught brawling... formally," Elsey said, with an amused smile. "What I know has come mainly from scrapping with mouthy squires," she laughed.
Her expression became a little more serious, though still friendly;
"I think I might try to learn more though, as I currently have no flail with which to train. You might understand that it is an uneasy feeling to have no solid means of defence."
Elsey took a long drink of her brandy, briefly closing her eyes, to savour it. While she held a strong sentimental attachment to Stormlands red, the taste of pear brandy was higher among her favourites in terms of flavour. The warmth of it made her feel more like a dragon.
However, when she looked back to Bertram, her eyes were sad, as she began to answer his inquiry about her dragon;
"Alas, Nenyan, my dragon, was slain in battle, My Lord. His skull is on display in a place of honour in the Throne Room of the Keep, along with that of his mother, Azuria, who died on the same day. He was killed by Ser Hector Dragonbane at the battle of Oldtown. He was given to me as a new hatchling on my first name day, so we grew up together. We were very close, of course. I used to call him Little Brother."
Elsey's expression was deeply nostalgic. She clearly missed her dragon very much, and was still hurting from the loss.
"I am not permitted to seek a bond with another dragon, so, until that changes, these are all I have of a dragon."
She held her hand out, her pendants nestled in her palm, on the end of a long silver chain. One was a small dragon's tooth, about the length of Elseyris' little finger, a hole bored through the widest part to hold it to the chain. The other was a small carving of a dragon, hewn from cream-coloured chalcedony, with flecks of lilac, sea green and gold under the surface, and a tiny amber gemstone set in it's eye.
"The tooth is one of Nenyan's, and the little carving is a rendering of his likeness, given to me by my sister."
She felt a lump in her throat as she spoke of Nenyan, and her eyes felt hot, as they did when they were about to well up. She forced the feelings away and smiled up at Bertram;
"Tell me of your dragon, My Lord, and will you sit with me?"
She gestured to an unoccupied nook in the room, strewn with rugs and cushions.

Bertram laughed heartily as he went to lounge on a particularly large and soft cushion, careful not to spill his drink, "Experience is the best teacher! And as long as you have your limbs, you have weapons to use, I have always respected hand-to-hand fighters."
He could see the sadness in Elseyris's face, and hear the emotion in her words as she spoke about her dragon Nenyan.
"The death of one's dragon is a difficult loss to bare, especially when raised from an egg. Those are beautiful tokens you have of him. Dragonbane, the second time I have heard his name today, thank the Gods he is gone. My own dragon, Vraxor, is also my best friend, although it took some time before he felt that way. He is... Difficult, I bonded with him when I was nineteen, although he was not very happy about it until he realized that I could help him as much as he could help me. We have been together for over 20 years now, although he is not enjoying his new home." Bertram enjoyed talking about Vraxor, although he resisted the urge to explain about his dragon's unusual appetite, especially with a girl who had just lost her own dragon.
"Have you ever been to this manse before? This Sergio must be quite the merchant to afford such things. I shall have to mingle and meet people soon, there are so many new faces. It has been a long time since I have been to a social gathering like this, let alone one so fun!" He said as he sipped on his brandy.

After being pushed into showing her face Kesi arrived at the party, her blue hair up, pinned with a black clip and dressed in a black Qartheen gown.
As was the custom in Qarth she had a gift for the host and after depositing it tried to find a suitable place to lurk.

"Well, perhaps we might profitably train sometime," Elsey smiled, sinking down into a cluster of cushions next to Bertram as gracefully as she could. "Yes, we are all glad that Ser Hector is dead. Prince Aegon's dragon ate him, it was quite the spectacle! All that was left of him was his sword arm, and Lord Maekar Dracaryn was gifted the weapon itself by the Prince after the battle." "Vraxor sounds like a fine beast, though I imagine the dragonpit must be frustrating for a creature used to more freedom. It is well that you won him over in the end." Elsey sipped her brandy and reclined a little. "I have not been here before, no, but it is lovely. I do believe Lord Delinaal is indeed quite wealthy, with a number of various business interests and holdings." She glanced around the room, then back to Bertram; "I hope I am not keeping you from mingling. I will not be offended if you wish to move on. I imagine you have much catching up to do."

After being pushed into showing her face Kesi arrived at the party, her blue hair up, pinned with a black clip and dressed in a black Qartheen gown. As was the custom in Qarth she had a gift for the host and after depositing it tried to find a suitable place to lurk. Spotting Kesi entering and looking around, Elsey waved and called out; "Kesi! Welcome! Will you join us?"

"It is being good to be seeing you again Lady Elseyris." She said, then looked at the man. "I am being sorry I am not knowing of your name?"

"You are keeping me from nothing! i had hoped to see some familiar faces at such a grand party, unfortunately it appears that I am to remain the old stranger at a young man's event." Bertram chuckled. "Ah, good! I was worried for a moment," Elsey smiled over the rim of her glass, taking another sip. "Besides, you seem more interesting than many men half your age that I have met."

His smile widening at the compliment, Bertram looked up when he heard Elseyris call to her friend, "Two beautiful ladies? It must be my birthday! Of course my wife would smack me in the head for saying such things." He said jokingly, looking around briefly as if she might appear from nowhere.
Bertram set his glass down beside his cushion and stood, taking the lovely blue-haired woman's hand and kissing it lightly as he bowed.
"I am Bertram Targaryen, I have just returned to King's Landing after many years away. You accent sounds like one of Qarth. I do not speak that, however..." Bertram switched to High Valyrian as he sat back down, "May I ask your name? I hope I am correct in my assumption that you speak the high tongue of Valyria."

Kesi inclined her head at the hand kissing then smiled as he spoke another language that she knew.
"You would be right." She answered in High Valyrian, "But I do fear that most in this city also know this tongue... And it is rude to be leaving poor Elseyris out, is it not?"
"My name is being Kesi." She switched back to common. "You would be being close to right saying Qarth."

Switching back to common Bertram chuckled as he said "Indeed, forgive me, just an old man showing off in front of the ladies. Kesi,a lovely name! What brings you to King's landing?"
He the directed his next question at them both, "How do you two ladies know each other?"

Elsey smiled as Bertram and Kesi briefly chatted in what she vaguely recognised from her time at court as High Valyrian.
"It is quite alright, Kesi. It is fascinating to hear foreign words, even if I do not understand them. It is lovely to see you."
She smiled between her and Bertram;
"Has your wife come to King's Landing with you, My Lord? I hope Kesi and I will not be in trouble for keeping you company," she chuckled, giving him a playful nudge, before finishing her glass of brandy and refilling it, offering the carafe to Kesi, then Bertram.
"Kesi is the crown's sorceress, and a fine one at that. I have been fortunate enough to be able to assist her on occasion."

As Bertram finished his brandy he waved off the carafe, preferring to snag yet another new alcohol, this one was a deliciously sweet mixed drink. "It has been too long since I have tasted such delightful drink, Lorath had terribly bland alcohol. We would often have drinking contests to pass the time on slow days."
His smile faded a bit as though about his love across the sea, "Unfortunately she did not come with me, I thought it safer for her to stay in Lorath, I was unsure how my return would be accepted. The capitol has always been a dangerous place, I will send for th- her when I feel it safe." Bertram played his mistake as if the alcohol was beginning to reach him, he almost let slip about is son, knowledge of his wife was one thing, she was a commoner with no claim to anything, but his son... A direct descendant of the last king, and still quite young. He would have to remain a secret for now.
"The sorceress of the crown! That sounds extremely interesting, what types of magics and mysticism do you practice? Bare in mind that I know very little of these things. How were you enlisted to his kingdom?"

"Lorath is no the greatest." Kesi agreed, but she gave a small smile as she remembered. "I was being a trader before I was coming here. My husband was dying and well... I was catching Kings servants eye with healing shop I used to be having. The rest is being well..." She shrugged.
"Thanks is being to you Elseyris." Kesi said, taking the brandy and pouring herself some.
