"And why would I know better?" she asked, mock coyly, but her face grinned, "Why should a nameless mask such as myself know any better than you?" she asked, taking two cups off a passing servant and passing one to the pirate woman.

"An impressive costume for an impressive dragon," Aegon replied with another smile, "But I was inquiring after your given name, not your costume." The dragon lady laughed. "I know you were, and I chose not to give it. Or...perhaps I was named after the dragon? That would be amusing. But you know, were it not for the fact that you speak with a foreign accent, I wouldn't know you are the Prince of Westeros. And yet you don't know who I am. It's so much more fun that way, I find. Would you like some wine? Or some Tyroshi brandy? I have quite a thirst." "And why would I know better?" she asked, mock coyly, but her face grinned, "Why should a nameless mask such as myself know any better than you?" she asked, taking two cups off a passing servant and passing one to the pirate woman. "Oh, please," said the lady dressed like a pirate. "You do not sound like one of the Volantenes, and I know all the guests who are meant to attend." She took the cup though. "I do hope my brother graces us with his presence. I think he would find your costume very appealing indeed. He boasts that he is the finest lover in all of Volantis."

She found use of term "the volantenes" interesting, it almost implied she was not one, but she didn't care enough to ask, "Who is your brother?" she asked, instead, very much doubting he'd live up to his self given name.

"You hardly need the mask for that," Aegon replied. "I only know two Volantenes and since you are neither of them, I think I shall be at a loss regardless."
Aegon turned and snagged a pair of cups from a passing server, handing one to the dragon woman. "Maegyr sounds like an old name, and since you are acquainted with Master Azantys," Aegon had deduced the man's identity from the woman's earlier words, "You must be a woman of some influence. Am I growing warmer, my lady Andraste?"

"A great warrior, in his own mind." The lady winked. "He is quite skilled as it happens. He has a ship of his own and spends much time working with our High Admiral, who was a second father to him. He served on his ship as a boy, like how a knight of Westeros has a squire." "You hardly need the mask for that," Aegon replied. Am I growing warmer, my lady Andraste?" "You are. But if you asked every man and woman who lived behind the Black Wall, they would all insist they had a great deal of influence. Though it is certainly true that the Maegyrs are among the most influential, with due respect to my friend here. Our family has been of the Tigers since Volantis was newly built."

"You are safe here, and so is he." She reached out to touch his shoulder, very gently. "I am sure you can use tonight to relax. It would be a terrible crime to harm a guest here behind the Black Wall, in the house of a Triarch. Oh, you had a bit of fluff stuck to you," she lied. "We have guardsmen posted, see." She indicated the men in the tiger livery standing by the doors. They were slave soldiers with stripes tattooed onto their cheeks. "There are certain forms that need to be observed, even if they are really not necessary," Brandon replied, "I'm sure you understand the nature of formality. Speaking of forms, why do you tattoo the slaves?"

"well then, I look forward to meeting him, though if he would enjoy me in this dress, it is fair to warn you, to warn him, I am here with my betrothed," she said, with a small smile painting her red lips, "It is you I am looking to get to know at the moment," she took a sip of drink again, "Do you take after your ancestor and have a lot to do with the sea like your brother?"

"Do you have a mind towards conquest, then?" Aegon asked, recalling earlier words said about the Tigers. " I don't, but the Tigers do, on the whole. They are a militant group and always have been. It may well happen. Why shouldn't Volantis be the new Valyria?" "There are certain forms that need to be observed, even if they are really not necessary," Brandon replied, "I'm sure you understand the nature of formality. Speaking of forms, why do you tattoo the slaves?" "Ah, that is so everyone knows who is a free citizen and who is a slave. But most of the slaves don't mind it. It's all they know. The slave soldiers are proud of their stripes. It is a great honour for a slave to become one of the guards," she explained. "As indeed is your Kingsguard, yes?" "well then, I look forward to meeting him, though if he would enjoy me in this dress, it is fair to warn you, to warn him, I am here with my betrothed," she said, with a small smile painting her red lips, "It is you I am looking to get to know at the moment," she took a sip of drink again, "Do you take after your ancestor and have a lot to do with the sea like your brother?" "A little," she said. "I sail with him sometimes. And sometimes with my lovers. I will have my own ship one day. I am talking to the shipwrights about the decision. Do you like sailing?"

"Well, that is what sailing is like to one who can fly," she said, not haughtily, as she might had she been back in the west, but just trying to explain in a way someone who had not flown a dragon could understand.

Many of our number have been famous warriors, or even the sons of high born lords and Kings." Brandon replied, "I do not put much stock in those to whom fighting is not their free choice." He cleared his throat, "Of course in Westeros we have this, peasants who must fight when their lord commands, but these men are easily scattered by a charge of armored horse. It is those who are anointed knights, men who have made the profession of arms their lives, and sworn their swords to loyalty and honor, where our strength resides." he coughed, "Well that and of course dragons."

"Oh, I see. Well, of course I don't but I've no dragon, so how could I?" She regarded Rhaena somewhat thoughtfully. "Do you love riding your dragon, think about flying when you are doing other things, and dream of it? That's how I am with sailing." "It is an honor, yes, but we are free men, not slaves. "Of course. Dragons make all the difference," she agreed. "But our customs are different. Many slaves know no other life and many are blessed with kind masters and mistresses. And the warriors are highly prized and given the best food and medical care. It is not a hardship for them. They have a better life than your peasants in the field. The Tiger guard never goes hungry, at least."

"Dragon's may move us around, but to many of us they are part of us," she replied, "I was born with my dragon, when my mother birthed me, he hatched. They are not just means to our ends, they are our ends. I do not dream of flying or long to fly, I dream of my dragon, and I long to be with him, He's not my ship... he is the ocean your ship brings you, and the freedom that means."

"A ship is no living thing, of course. I wish I had that bond with a living creature. I have a cat who travels with me, but it's not the same. But tell me, do dragons always hatch when a new baby is born to your family?"

Arguing with a woman about the nature of motivating men to fight seemed a particular waste of time to him after all. "But what is the point of this party if not to hear interesting opinions from others we might not have met otherwise."

"Why not? We are learning about each other, are we not? House Maegyr keeps a menagerie, which includes tigers, if you would like to see them. They are beautiful and fierce. I am quite fond of them, though it's said they have been known to eat men.""

"wouldn't be very fierce if they didn't." Brandon replied, "But having seen dragons, I do not know if there is a creature that will impress me for its fierceness." "Ah but all strange creatures are wondrous to behold for the first time, and we cannot all have a dragon." She stroked her hand across his upper arm. "Even knights are wondrous to a woman of Volantis. You are a rare breed here." "I should suppose a lack of dragons," Aegon replied. "But one should be careful of such goals. Some say that the Doom was the price of old Valyria's hubris." "So they do," the dragon woman agreed. "And what of Targaryen hubris? I have heard that the dragonkings are extremely proud creatures, and their queens likewise. Why would the gods not turn their attention next to the only dragonriders left in the world? Besides, Dragonstone was once the most westerly outpost of the Valyrian Empire and yet its lords became kings of a great realm. Dragons or not, Volantis is hardly weak. Indeed, we do very well with trade and military might, and only Westeros has dragons. There is no reason why we might not extend our borders. Though certainly we would be wise to make friends with the dragonriders of Westeros."
