A manse in the city is in the process of being made ready for its new owners, Lord Rhaegar Targaryen and his betrothed, the seed Vira. The stone-and-timber manse sits on Aegon's Hill below the Red Keep, high up enough to be spared the stench of the city and enjoy views of the Dragonpit and the river and bay beyond the city walls. It is a handsome property with its own well, stables and gardens, fenced off from the road by high stone walls and a tall black gate.

The servant led the way to the manse. "Here it is, m'lady. The staff is already in residence." Guards stood posted close by to guard the manse from would-be looters. It was, also, a reminder that Vira's future husband was the son of the late Aenar Targaryen.

Vira and Maekar had ridden down the hill with the steward on city-bred palfreys. The manse was a handsome one, and Vira felt a swell of happiness to think that she had a property of her own, deeded to her name - No, my lord husband's name, she thought. It was perhaps not what Aenar Targaryen had envisioned for his only son and heir, but it was a charming home for Vira. And she had wanted to see it for the first time with Maekar by her side.
"Can you tell me a little bit more about the staff?" Vira asked the steward. Her belly was slowly starting to show, and she dismounted from her sorrel mare slowly and carefully with Maekar's help. "There will be a household guard and a captain of the guards, won't there?"

Maekar carefully helpd Vira down from her horse, his hand lingering on the bump at her midsection as he gently set her on the ground. He smiled down at her as they approached the steward, and allowed her to take the lead; this was to be her house after all.

"There;s no captain of the guard, m'lady. You'll have a score of guards and a sergeant. And you'll have a steward, maids, a cook and scullery maid, a page and a stableboy. Oh, and a gardener." That was a small staff but perhaps it wouldn't seem so small to Vira.

It certainly did not seem a small staff to Vira, who had grown up with the men and women who became maids and manservants in great homes. It was strange to think that she'd have her own staff, and Vira had a sudden moment of anxiety that some of them might be her old friends, or kin of people she knew. How mortifying if they recognized her! But no - why should it be mortifying? she reasoned. My old friends already work for me, and if my new servants have any connection to my old life, that can only be a good thing. She resolved to be a kindly mistress, one who would never make the mistakes that had often made Vira's friends grumble and complain when they came home to Lower Crinkley for holidays and village festivals.
"Isn't it beautiful?" Vira asked Maekar, as they followed the king's steward through the black gates. She had her arm linked through Maekar's. Walking was oddly more comfortable than riding. Vira wore a gown of extremely soft and fine blue wool, richly embroidered at the collar and sleeves.

"It is quite," Maekar replied, slipping his arm around Vira's waist as they walked side by side. She could feel his fingers splayed protectively across her hip, and he took in the Manse with a keen gaze. "I shall furnish you with additional staff, should you need them," he added with a smile. They had already agreed that four of his Darkheart soldiers would accompany Vira when she took up residence in her new home, answerable to her and her alone.

"You're going to spoil me rotten if you keep this up," she laughed, as they entered the house. It was still in the process of being furnished, with two days to go to Vira and Rhaegar's wedding. "You should visit often. I plan to tell my lord husband what the nature of our marriage shall be."

"I think I shall," Maekar replied with a smile. "If only to be sure that the pair of you are not up to any treason," he added, with a small chuckle, and Vira felt his hand creep slowly down to her backside as they walked. "Pray tell, what will be the nature of this marriage, Lady Targaryen?"

Though Vira had a suspicion that him calling her "Lady Targaryen" was the wrong form of address, she was pleased by it. She kissed him playfully and pushed him into a wooden chair upholstered in leather, with dragons as its armrests. "Well, Lord Rhaegar might be a very sweet, gentle, kind and nice man, and if he is, I wouldn't want to shame or insult him too much," she said, kissing Maekar. "But I will bring you here, perhaps, when he is not at home."

Maekar landed in the chair heavily, though as he fell he grabbed Vira's wrist, pulling her into his lap. He met her kiss with passion, laughing a little as she came away slightly desheveled. "Whenever my lady sees fit to host me, I shall be here," he replied playfully. "Though your lord husband will not have much occasion to be out, I should think. What could a man with no lands or dragon possibly spend his time doing?"

"Cruel? Me!?" he asked, in a scandalized tone. "It pains me that you could even suggest such a thing, my lady," he replied. He did not think, knowing what he knew of Rhaegar, that the man was capable of acquiring either friends OR a mistress, but he did not speak the words despite the fact that they showed plainly on his face.

Vira read the skepticism on his face and chuckled. She was inclined to think quite kindly of Rhaegar herself, having had no cause to feel unfriendly towards him yet. And besides, it was always better to have an amiable farce of a marriage than an unpleasant, unfriendly one. Vira did not doubt that Rhaegar likely had his own women, and felt sure she could get along with him well. She got along with everyone.
Vira stroked Maekar's hair. "In my village, we always thought a new home needed a blessing," she said with a sly smile. "And the most auspicious blessing comes from a man's loins."

"You are rather insatiable, aren't you," Maekar replied, kissing her neck gently. "Fortunately, that is my favorite kind of woman. You are the Lady of this house, and as such, I am yours to command," he added, a mischevious grin crossing his face.

After her trip to the riverlands, Vira returned to King's Landing and stabled Aegerys at the Dragonpit. She almost rode a horse to her manse, but remembered her promise to Ser Axell and ordered a sedan chair, citing her frail condition. Vira had sent word to Ser Axell that he would be free to join her in King's Landing, but she had not flown him back with her. It would likely be some weeks before he could ride back to the city.
When her sedan chair deposited her outside her manse, Vira gave herself over to the attentions of her handmaid Yara, and retired gratefully inside her house.

Vira summoned a dentist to her home one afternoon. She had been in pain for some weeks, conscious that there was something wrong either in her jaw or with her teeth. Her left jaw seemed swollen and only drinking numbed the pain.

After a while, a grey-haired man in a bloodstained apron showed up. He nodded politely to Vira and set his bag of implements on the ground. It clinked ominously.
"Sit down and open your mouth," he said, very brusquely.

Vira looked at the bag of instruments in terror. She had drunk quite a lot of wine, in anticipation for what might come and to dull the pain in the back of her mouth, but still she felt terrified. His blood-stained apron did not reassure her.
"What is wrong with my tooth?" she asked anxiously. She opened her mouth for him to examine. The dentist could see that the tooth had begun to erupt to the surface behind Vira's molars. As Vira was seventeen, this was not surprising. Her gums were red, and there was clear swelling around the impacted tooth.

"The tooth is too big for your mouth," he said. "We get extra teeth when we reach your age, my lady, but you have a small jaw and your mouth cannot bear it. A growing tooth is often painful, and especially now, when you do not have room for it to grow properly. It must come out."

All the color drained from Vira's face. She had never had a tooth drawn before, but plenty of her friends had, and the agony they described had made her quail. Her stomach grew heavy with dread, and she felt tears starting in her eyes.
"What will happen if you don't draw the tooth out?" she asked, shakily reaching for the wine bottle and drinking more. She was already a little light-headed, but she intended to be truly drunk if this was going to happen.

"The pain will grow much worse," he said. "It may affect your ability to eat and will certainly make you uncomfortable. I would not recommend leaving the tooth in. Strongwine will dull the pain in the meantime. Fetch me a glass."
He took a small bottle out of his bag. "There will be pain, I'm afraid, but it can't be helped."

Vira's maid went to get the strongwine, and returned with both the wine and a pair of smooth, slender brown belts.
"Good idea," Vira said, pouring the strongwine as the maid left the belts on the table. "Those are to strap my arms onto the armrests of the chair. It will be necessary."
She began gulping down strongwine. Part of her wanted to tell the man to get it over with, but part of her was terrified and would never feel ready. The thought of the man cutting into her tender, swollen red gum brought frightened tears to Vira's eyes. Her hand was shaking again.
"Better strap me in," she said in a small voice.

He strapped her in as requested. "Try to move your arms," he instructed. "I want to be sure you can't move too much. I've had patients thrash about before, if they're not restrained. They can cause themselves more pain than they need to."
He turned to Yara. "Boil a pan of water water, girl, and a small one of wine."
Yara hurried to obey.

Vira tried to move her arms, but the dentist had strapped her in very securely. The wine was beginning to make her feel wonderfully dizzy, and she hoped she would not vomit or void her bladder when this surgery began. The pain in her jaw had slowed to a dull throb, and as Vira ran her tongue over the impacted tooth, she consoled herself by imagining how good she would feel after it had healed and she wouldn't have to deal with that damn tooth again.
"Done this a long time, have you?" she asked hopefully.
