"Near thirty years," he said. "I was trained by a hedge maester in my youth. Couldn't go to Oldtown to train as a proper maester, of course, and the people need their teeth pulled and cuts stitched, same as they did before the Citadel was shut off. So this hedge maester, he had a school for likely lads. Taught midwives too. But I was always best at pulling teeth." He leered at her. "Now open your mouth and hold still."

Oh gods, here it comes. Hoping she wouldn't faint, vomit, or relieve herself, Vira opened her mouth and cringed back in her hair. Her maid had place a pillow to support Vira's head and neck against the hard-backed chair.

He had put the instruments in the boiled water to clean them. Now he took them out, reached into her mouth with a pair of pincers. The moments that followed were full of agony as he gripped, twisted and pulled. And then, as Yara was instructed to fetch a basin, Vira's mouth was filling with blood.
"Spit," he cried. "Spit the blood out so I can clean the wound."

Vira screamed as he operated on her, and they discovered it was lucky he had strapped her arms down. Vira tried to turn her head away many times and finally Yara had to grip her head and hold her still while the operation went on. It only lasted about five minutes, for the man had a sharp eye and deft, experienced hands, but it felt like an eternity of torture to Vira, who screamed and cursed till she was hoarse. The agony when the tooth came out nearly made her faint, and the faintly metallic taste of blood filled her mouth. Yara the maid had to push her forward to help her spit the blood out.
"Poppy," Vira moaned. "Give me poppy!"

Yara soon fetched a clean cup with a dose of milk of the poppy.
"Not too much," the dentist advised. "She will need it again later. Now, listen, both of you. The wound must be washed with warm water, boiled and salted, after every meal for a week. Don't chew on that side of your mouth, and take milk of the poppy twice daily if you need to. For now, you must wad up a clean cloth and press it to your mouth to stop the bleeding. Do this as long as you need to. A few hours at least."

It was Yara who was left to listen to the man's instructions, for Vira was dizzy with pain and quaffed the milk of the poppy that was given to her. However, she held still long enough for Yara to press a square of gauze over the bleeding wound - whimpering with pain as Yara did so - and then said, in a voice already slurring from the poppy, "thank you for your services goodman. Yara will see to your bill. I must - I must lie down." The combination to wine, poppy, pain and tiredness was too much.

Yara helped Vira lie down on a nearby sofa before she went to pay the dentist. He reiterated his instructions and left them alone. Yara stood by Vira, worried. "Get some sleep," she advised. "It will help."

Yana, after making arrangements with Vira on the time to meet, arrives for dinner, She knocks on the door and waits to be invited to enter.
Yana is wearing her hair in a high pony tail braid, the end bound with her Spinel scale and leather laced clasp. She is wearing her second best woolen dress, it is elgagantly form fitting with a looser skirt that flows a litte around her feet, where as most would wear slippers or soft shoes, Yana is wearing her usual, now somewhat worn, boots, although she has tried to polish them some to make the scuffs look less obvious.
She carries a small, wrapped guest gift
(ooc - its a small hand polished scale from Spinel with some thin leather thongs coiled in the packet, the scale has had holes bored in it in several places for both decoration and attachment, can be used as a hair clasp or ornament or something of that ilk)

The steward ushered her inside. The stone-and-timber manse was spacious and airy inside, with polished dark wooden floors.
"Yana Snow of White Harbor, my lady," the steward announced as Yana entered a reception room. He bowed and departed, and Lady Vira rose to greet Yana with a smile. She was also dressed in soft wool, partly for the comfort it provided and partly because Vira ran her household and her personal expenses on a tight budget, a habit she learned the hard way in her home village. It was a gown of soft blue wool, plainly cut but richly embroidered around collar and sleeves, and her glossy dark locks tumbled loose about her shoulders. The swell of her belly was very evident, as she was six months along in her pregnancy.
"I am so glad you could come," Vira said warmly, walking over and clasping Yana's hand. "What is this, my lady? Oh, you shouldn't have." Vira unwrapped the gift and admired the dragonscale ornament. The dragons shed their scales seasonally, but Vira had never seen the scales put to such creative use. "Thank you, Yana. I shall have to wear this some time. How has your dragon settled into the Pit?"
She led Yana into the dining room. A small dinner for two had been laid. It consisted of lamprey pie, mashed yellow turnips in butter, oxtail soup and ale. It was not the most expensive menu, but Vira only went to such extravagant expense when she was entertaining a high lord and his wife. The dinner that had been prepared tonight was plain home food, but well prepared, and much more to Vira's own liking than expensive dishes like jellied calves' brains and pale amber wines. She had suspected that Yana, who was common-born like Vira, would prefer this menu as well.

Yana smiles back and returns the hand clasp 'Thank you for the invite Lady Vira, it is most kind of you.' She looks pleased at the reception of the gift 'It is just a small token.. it's always nice to wear pretty things' she grins.
'Spinel is settling well, Thank you, she's enjoying the company of other dragons.. well those that arent sevrely grumpy all the time..'
Yana looks around as shes led to the table 'You have a lovely home..' She spies the tables contents 'Ooo turnips.. I love turnips' She smiles widely as they sit. 'How are you and the babe progressing?' She indicates Vira's swollen belly 'Have you much longer to go?'

"About three more months," Vira smiled, as the pie was carved and served. While ale was poured for Yana, Vira made do with well water. "I hope you haven't had any trouble settling into your new life. What was your childhood like, did you grow up in the Manderly castle or in the town? I was a little overwhelmed by the strangeness of these nobs and their funny ways, and to be honest I don't know if I'll ever feel entirely comfortable with their Valyrian ways, but luckily I had a friend in Lord Maekar, who guided me through it all. You must tell me if you would like help as well. I understand how bizarre the Targaryens are, and how strange the life of a lady must feel."

'Thank you' Yana says as the food is served. She tries the pie 'This is tasty.. I am finding Kings Landing to be differnt to White Harbour.. there are numberous simialrties also.. I.. spent a lot of my childhood learning diffrent things and doing as Lord Manderly wanted as it was soon found that I would be better at things other than being a kitchen runner, some were fun.. some really not fun, but it all helped to teach me what I would be the best use to Lord Manderly as making sure the interests of House Manderly ran smoothly.' she sips the ale and eats some food 'The turnips are lovely, I've not had yellow ones for what seems like a long time.. I've always had to fend for myself.. once I was employed my mother left the big house for work else where.. I've spent time in the castle, the town and surrounding areas'

"I'm glad you like them. Have some more." The maid served Yana more of the mashed turnips. "The yellow ones probably don't grow as abundantly in the cold North. They're not something we had often in our village either, for that matter, and I grew up in the crownlands. In what capacity were you employed?"

'Thank you' She says to the maid, 'Anything and everything that was required to see that the interests of House Manderly went well and dealing with any problems that might come up..' Yana smiles in an amused but slightly sadistic way that leaves little douby to how such things might have been dealt with 'After the first few there were far fewer problems once I took over from my predecessor'
'How was your childhood? Which trade did you learn?'

The maid look startled at being thanked. It was a kindness that she had not come to expect from the true highborn, who never deigned to notice the servants and treated them like furniture.
Vira listened thoughtfully to Yana's answer, and there was a new, speculative look in her eye. "Oh, me?" she said, ladling more oxtail soup into her bowl. "We owned a mill in one of Lord Rosby's villages. My mother and I ran it mostly, since my father wasn't the most responsible man, though bless him he had a good heart."

Yana mops up some soup with some of her pie crust 'What is it women do in King's Landing for entertainment? I've wandered around the city a little but thus far no amusement has took my fancy.. I hung around the court room for a day or so and the courtiers seem to just mill about gossiping.. In my experiance theres usually a reason why you would be hanging about but here it seems to be some sort of a sport..' Yana smiles wryly 'Their not needing to earn a crust I'd guess'

"I have no idea what goes on at court," Vira shrugged, washing down her meal with cold water. "Many lickspittles live only to curry favor with the dragons, but I barely know who those are." The meal was cleared away and the dessert course was served. It consisted of freshly baked honey biscuits and blueberries in cream. The honey biscuits would have been scorned at a lord's table, but they were a childhood favorite of Vira's, mostly because they had been a rare and expensive treat that she had only indulged in at village festivals and holy days at the village sept.
"Have you given some thought as to how you will serve the crown, now that you are in King's Landing and not White Harbor?" Vira continued. "You must try those biscuits. All my servants are from my home village, you know, and this is the kind of food we loved to eat."

'I suuppose it depends on if anyone looking to hire a person with a odd set of skills, if i cant find work then I'll go elsewhere, if nothing else then Lord Manderly would happily reengage my services.. I've heard that the crown insists on oathing Riders and I'm not sure how I feel about that, Now I have earned my freedon i do not intend to give it up so easily.. i suppose am too used to Spinel and myself wandering where our feet take us.' Yana delicately picks up a buiscut as to not break it before taking the first bite, she does and makes a surprised mmm slightly groaned sound at the taste 'Wow.. they are amazing, I've never been all that fond of the odd and far too costly and heavy in the belly foods that are so popular at engadements'

"I love people with an odd set of skills," Vira said, smiling with pleasure at Yana's enjoyment of the honey biscuits. "Your wandering days are over, at least for the time being."

"Don't speak in terms of contracts anymore, my dear," Vira said gently. "I used to think as you did - it's how we were raised. But you're blood of the dragon now, and that means our friendships are a little more...genteel. Though yes, I do reward my friends for their loyalty and services. And I always have a need of a girl like you."

Yana gives a smile and after licking some cream from her spoon she gives Vira a curious look 'What might you have need of me to do?'

Yana gives a pleasureable smile, mostly hidden by the honey biscut, but Vira would understand that she understands 'What other sorts of dishes are popular in your homeland?'

"Come and take a walk with me in my garden, and I'll show you what I grow," Vira said with a smile, rising from her chair and beckoning Yana.
