"Yes, it was. The need was so very urgent after all," she replied lightly.

Maekar smiled widely, as if it were not completely obvious what they had just done, and he took his seat behind the desk. "I trust you had a profitable negotiation, Master Delinaal?" he asked. "I am told that I owe you a significant sum; I half of it up front and I can arrange transport from Darkheart to a point of your choosing. Two shipments should suffice for the first half, twenty-five thousand apiece. The other half can be delivered within… two months, three at the most. That will suffice for your needs?"

Sergio nodded, "That will. I understand why time is of the essence so I will urge my man to begin preparations beforehand." The Braavosi studied the two of them with his deep dark eyes.

Maekar nodded. "We will be returning to the capital in five days for my wedding to Lady Visenya. I will fly the first payment to a location outside the city, and arrange a carriage to take it the rest of the way, to arrive through the King's Gate at high noon of that day. It will be two chests in a carriage; how will you identify it, without it being marked in a way that others might take note of?"

"Just marked it with a black circle. A large one on top." Sergio replied. "Are you excited about your impending nuptials?" His eyes moved to Vira as he asked the question.

"Indeed, I am. Lady Visenya is a fine match," Maekar replied, "and I am quite fond of her as well. I have less regard for Lord Rhaegar, though I think perhaps he could be a useful ally if he could learn to be cooperative."

Sergio nodded with smile on his face, "And how does your lady feel about your other lady?" He studied the mans face curiously, but he cast a glance at Vira to see if she reacted at all.

Maekar paused for a moment, the expression on his face appearing to say that he was weighing the value of honestly and he quietly enclosed Vira's hand in his own again, slipping his fingers between hers. He did not look up at her, or otherwise give any indication that he needed her ascent to speak freely, however.
"My heart is divided, but it is my hope that the two women who share it can stand beside each other sisters, friends, and allies. It will be so, will it not?" he asked, finally glancing up at Vira, standing beside him.

His heart is divided? Vira's smile remained in place, but she inwardly decided they would have to speak of that together. She fumed at Sergio having the audacity to ask such a personal question. Relieving her lord of a hundred thousand gold dragons precluded Sergio from indulging in any familiarity, at least in Vira's mind.
"Let us not keep Master Delinaal if he has business to attend to and arrangements to make," she said pleasantly. "All that is left to be arranged is the secrecy and security of the payments, which I am sure will be taken care of."

Maekar examined the Braavosi's face as Vira spoke, though a small frown crossed his own. "You do not trust me, Master Delinaal," he said after a pause; it was a statement, not a question. "You suspect I am setting you up."

Sergio chuckled, "If you make a misstep or wake up with a guilty conscious one morning it is not you who will be paying the price." He looked at the two of them. "I am just a dirty foreigner and you are a grand high inquisitor of the Targaryen Empire. No one would believe a word I side. I do not think you mean to betray me, but I think you would if the winds forced you to tack to a new course."

"You are not unwise to be fearful of that," Maekar replied slowly, with an even longer pause before speaking again. "If our tasks are executed properly, however, there is no cause for fear. I would not hesitate to throw you beneath a carriage, so to speak, to ensure my survival, but I suspect that no number of scapegoats would accomplish that task if my hand is felt too early."

Sergio's eyes again drank them in. His missing nothing, "Lady Vira, I am working as your agent but your Lord was the one who came to me seeking an alliance." He moved toward the exit. "I am sure we can talk about that at another time though."

"Stop," Maekar said. "It does not lend me confidence, when I lay my cards on the table before you and your response is to flee the room," he said with a frown. "I do not think we are done here yet, if we seek to each have reason to trust the other."

Sergio stopped and turned arOund. He leaned back against The wall next to the door. "I accept your explanation. It is true." He looked back and forth Between them."I do not need to trust you if you only want a hireling."

This was Vira's first meeting with a foreigner, and she was starting to think her childhood stories of the Braavosi being incomprehensible and odd were probably true after all. The man sometimes made so little sense that he might have been speaking Valyrian for all Vira understood of his cryptic comments.
"If you represent the Sealord of Braavos, then you are his hireling, not Lord Maekar's," Vira said. "And the only man Lord Maekar is hiring is your expensive and talented associate. You may consider yourself an advisor to my lord, and a friend, and an envoy of the Delinaal family."

Sergio smiled to himself. His eyes lowering for just a moment "Are we to be friends then?" He looked back and forth between them.

"The betrayal of a friend is much sharper than the betrayal of a business associate," Maekar replied, getting to his feet, "but friends can also get that much more accomplished successfully. We shall be friends, Master Delinaal," he added, approaching the Braavosi and offering his hand.

Yes, and what's a hundred thousand dragons between friends? she thought to herself wryly. As much as Vira understood the need for the payment, her peasant instincts rebelled against it most stridently.

Sergio took Maekar's hand. He squeezed his hand as he stared into the man's eyes. "Friends then."

Sergio waited a moment, and then said, "Well this is heartwarming. I think I am going to start to weep." He raised a hand to his eyes, and then flashed a quuick smile.

Maekar fought the urge to roll his eyes -eye, rather- and a small smirk touched the corner of his mouth. "Five days hence, at the King's Gate, high noon. The first half of your payment will be in a marked wagon, and I will be in the sky to ensures that the wagon reaches the city safely. The second half will be forthcoming, within the next two turns of the moon."
