The city of Volantis sits on a very deep harbor at the edge of the river Rhoyne which leads up into the mainland of Essos. Many Volantenes claim that the hundred isles of Braavos could be dropped into the harbor and disappear.

Jaes makes his way down to the harbor to meet his brother who was supposed to be returning from their latest expedition from Valyria, after receiving a raven that was sent back to him from their ship saying they were on time to arrive.

His younger brother, Geoffroi, had just disembarked from his ship, the Silver Lady. He was a scant inch taller than his brother, slender and handsome, with hair to his shoulders. He grinned when he saw Jaes. "What news?"

"Not much has been going on around here." He says cheerfully as the two brothers embrace. "The training of the new slaves are going well, and we received an order from the Archon of Tyroshi's brother." Jaes states. "How was your trip." He adds after a pause, while looking up at the Silver Lady.

"Not good. The winds were fair, but our spoils were minimal. We've likely taken most of what can be salvaged now. I brought back a few rings and a sword but that was all. I have been studying the scrolls, trying to find an account of the Dragonbinder, but there has been no luck with that either. The bloody thing is likely at the bottom of the sea by now," Geoffroi grumbled.

Jaes nods, and towards the back of his mind an idea about underwater salvaging teams starts to form but he quickly shakes his head wiping the idea from his mind. "I'm sure there are more treasures that have yet to be discovered, the horn not withstanding." He says before looking around to see who was nearby, "We will have to go over the maps again to see if their is a spot that we have missed." He says leaning in close so that only his brother could hear the last part.

"Yes. We will keep trying a while longer. There's paintings on the walls, sometimes. I wonder if those are a clue. But then again, they could just be paintings, and half of them are faded. And there's only ruins, anyway. One of the men threw himself from the ship as we crossed the Smoking Sea. The crew are still talking about it. They swear the ruins drove him mad."

Jaes thinks on that, "Next time you head out, we will send a slave that knows how to paint, I want copies of those paintings, faded or not." He replied, after hearing about the crew member his face hardened slightly, "Was this man a slave or a freedman that we had hired on?" Jaes asks.

"A freedman. He has a wife and children in the city. Fool. Yet he was clearly out of his mind. He screamed that we were all cursed and flung himself across the rail, and drowned. It was too stormy to send a line to him, and I doubt he would have taken it." Geoffroi frowned. "Some of the slaves claim the ruins are haunted."

"I'll have a stipend sent to the widow and the child, as well as offer them another job to keep themselves fed. Silence the slaves to prevent any further unrest among the other slaves and the crew." Jaes states frankly. "Welcome back home, brother." Jaes adds his voice warming up after the status report.

"It's good to be home, though you know I love the sea, and the ruins. We will need to branch out in future, look for relics in other places. Valyria has been picked clean," Geoffroi remarked.

Jaes nods, the news was distressing yet, he wasn't sure that they had picked the entire place clean. "We will move on brother, you can be sure of that." He says with a reassuring smile.

"Of course. Perhaps we might consider Elyria or Tyria next? It is time we looked to other regions. How are things here?"

Jaes nods, "Tyria would probably be the most promising, we can explore both in time though. Things here are as they have always been, the Triarchs rule, we vote, and the slaves do our bidding."

"Of course. That sounds good enough to me," Geoffroi observed. "We should look to our own political advantage. It's past time we looked to the future instead of the past."

"In looking at the past and holding to tradition, the future will come to pass." Jaes states. "You are correct though brother, it is well past time that we start making our plans come to fruition."

"Indeed. But the harbour is no place to discuss our intentions, I know. It's been a while since I had a good vintage. We can't take the good stuff with us, of course"

"I would like to see the fruits of the latest trip as well. We can look over those while I reacquaint you with the latest vintages that I have come across." He states with a smile and clapping his younger brother on the back.

Aegon waits at the harbor. For the first time, the dragons are in the city, awaiting departure. A broad area has been cleared for them, though curious gawkers still watch the enormous beasts from second-story windows. The dragonriders await whoever has been placed in charge of the Volantene force.

Brandon was on Aerion, not far from Glutton, already mounted, and ready to fly.
"We shall see if these Volantenes have anything of Old Valyria in them besides the arrogance."

Aegon made a noise that indicated a heavy skepticism. "We will see. As long as they look impressively strong enough, it should not matter what their true merit is."

Brandon sniffed. "And if Lys does not meet our demands?" Brandon asked, "Although it would be foolish, I've not seen much to suggest to me that it is not a city of fools."

Aegon's face was drawn. "A threat made but not enforced is foolishness. If it comes to that... then let us hope slave soldiers can fight as well as free."

Brandon shrugged, with marked indifference. He did not think much of slave troops, even if they were famed for their discipline. "There are none freer than those on dragonback."
