Bertram nodded and took a large swig of his beer, "Yes indeed, I was sent away to Lorath twenty years ago as a 'Royal Envoy'. I have finally reached the end of my commitment and have come back to see how things have been during my absence."
It was true that their bastards must know some history of the Targaryens lest they insult the wrong person. The fact that Bertram fell into the category of needed history took him by surprise.
"Tell me Vagarr, have you lived in King's Landing all your life?"

"I must not know, just trying to make conversation. And there is no need for titles like that, at least not here, please call me Bertram." He did not like to be called your grace outside of the royal court, he had not felt like a prince for many years.
"If you feel I am being too nosy please feel free to stop me." He felt, due to the young man's short and direct answers, that Bertram was keeping Vagarr from something, or at the very least imposing himself on the unsuspecting Gold Cloak.

Bertram laughed loudly.
"There is very little pride in being Maegor the Cruel's son, and with the title of prince comes the ridiculous and nonsensical power struggle of those who are jealous or angry. It was nice being away from the cataclysmic atrocities that being royalty pairs one with. Blood and name does not a great man make, you would do well to remember that. You have earned your title through struggle and hard work, I acquired mine just by being born and threw it all away by being a rash and stupid cockstrong young man."
He shrugged and stood as he finished his beer, "Call me what you will, I can see you have been raised well. It must be what has brought you so far in this cruel place."
Bertram laid some money on the table for their meals as he prepared to leave. "Thank you for your time and banter Ser Rivers, it has been very refreshing."
He started towards the door and then turned around, "You seem like a bright man, I truly hope we have cause to meet again."
