"Ah, the perfume of home," Vira sighed. "Come, Maekar. We've found our woodsman's cottage. Now remember to let me do the talking." So saying, she turned and led them in the direction of the scent, and as they drew near, she knocked on the cottage door.

Maekar grunted, as they had agreed, suppressing a small laugh. His body was loose, but he was prepared to kill should it come to it, though he would follow Vira's lead.

"Eustace? Is that you?" an old woman's voice called from behind the door, as it opened. "Back already?"
As the door opened, the woman's lined face changed from confused joy to just simply confusion.
"We've no goods worth steeling." she said plainly, clearly assuming the pair were bandits.

Vira had no intention of revealing themselves as bandit hunters, as that would put the woman on the defensive if she and her husband were friends of Beatrix - unlikely as that seemed, considering the way she had greeted them. One could never be too careful. They needed to be on neutral ground. She spoke in her peasant voice, giving the woman a sisterly smile.
"Not thieves, goodwoman," she said. "Beg your pardon for frightening you. We're survivors from Oldtown, used to chop timber in the forest beside the Honeywine till the dragons burned it up. Need to make a living, but splitting logs and living in the woods is all my husband knows how to do, and he lost an eye, a hand, and his speech after he took a blow to the head. Damn dragons." She spat derisively. "Anyway, we been traveling for months to escape the death in the Reach, thought we could apply to Bronzegate for a license near here. But we heard tell of bandits in these woods. Any chance you can tell us more, mistress? Don't need my husband's other hand chopped off too."

Maekar stood behind her, maintaining a slightly dumb expression, though he had to fight down a smirk when Vira mentioned his blow to the head in battle. It was not entirely inaccurate, though he was amused that she claimed he could not speak; it made sense as his false accent was atrocious, and any words on his part would give away his aristocrat's upbringing instantly.

The woman eyed the pair with scrutiny, eyes going to Maekar's sword.
"Not like no woodcutter I've ever seen. Can't fell a tree either way, with one hand." she replied, skeptically. "'Side, it be unwise to speak ill of dragons in these parts."
She did not seem to have any desire to talk to the pair, nor much pity at their sad tale.

"I'm going to be the woodcutter, since he lost hand in Oldtown," Vira said, pointing to the axe strapped to her back. "And it is bandits I wish to speak of, goodwoman. Forgive my runaway tongue about dragons, but my blood runs hot when I remember Oldtown. Just give us five minutes of your time, that's all I ask, and we'll be on our way to Bronzegate." Vira smiled.

"Don't have five minutes to spare." she replied. "Husband and two boys to feed. Supper's a daily strife. Don't know nothing of no bandits."

"We've got some oatbread and cheese we could share," Vira offered, deciding that an additional offer of salt beef would not particularly tempt her. "And I can do the cooking and washing for you. Please, goodwoman, I'm a woman all alone with a useless mute husband in these woods. I can use a friend, and be a better one. Name's Nell, by the way, and very pleased to meet you."

"Muriel" she replied, opening the door for them. "Get to work then."
"Tell your man there's no weapons in the house." she added.

"He'll say outside then," Vira said. She wasn't about to make Maekar part with Vigilance. She left her axe beside him outside, and went in with the bread and cheese. She began to help Muriel with the cooking. "What do you know of Beatrix of the Briar?" she asked. "Where does she roam in these woods? Does she have a large company?"

"Work first, talk later." the old woman replied, closing the door behind her to leave Maekar outside in the cold.

Humph. Vira did the cooking with deft, experienced hands, feeling sorry for Maekar who was trapped out in the cold.

Maekar leaned against a tree outside the house, his arms crossed against his chest. He took in the surroundings carefully, looking for signs of more people having been on the property than just the woman's family. It was unlikely, that if they gave aid to passing bandits, that there would be signs of the bandits making camp, but footprints were easily visible in the muddy ground, and Maekar tried to determine if there were more grown mens' footprints than there ought to be. He scanned the surrounding area every so often, and he had to fight off the urge to pace impatiently; Vira would likely be inside working for several hours, if she truly intended to get useful information out of this woman.

The sun began to set as they prepared supper, a hearty stew for the returning woodsmen.
There were three of said woodsmen; two strapping men of dark hair the consistency of a brillow pad that must have been twins and an old man who had long ago lost his. They stopped before Maekar with curious glances, eyeing his sword and the axe next to him.
"Mum done with supper yet?" one of Muriel's sons asked expectantly.

Maekar was chewing on a strip of jerky when they walked up, and he swallowed opened his mouth to reply, and then paused. He pointed at his throat and shook his head, and then pointed at the cabin and tried to mime cooking.
He wasn't sure if the men understood or not, and he pulled three more strips of jerky out of his pack, offering them to the woodsmen.

"'preciate the offer but we'd rather be having your coin." the old man replied, presumably Eustace, as the two sons held their axes menacingly.
"That sword of yours too." he said, seeing the star shaped crystal glint in the dying sunlight. "Don't take kindly to those who kill holy knights in these parts."

"Fucking great," Maekar snarled, more than loudly enough to be heard inside the hut, dropping the jerky and pack, and drawing Vigilance in one fluid motion. "Come and take it then, of you think three if you are enough," he said with a sneer, adopting a defensive stance and waiting for the men to attack.

Vira heard Maekar's shout, and her suspicions - aroused by the woman Muriel's request to remove her weapons before entering - were confirmed. Maekar would not have broken character if it wasn't a trap. "You old bitch," she spat at Muriel. Bending down, she hefted the pot of scalding hot stew and flung it at the woman.

Confident in their numbers, especially considering their opponent was one-handed and one-eyed, the two brothers foolishly rushed Maekar with axes raised high above their heads.
Maekar had positioned his blade in a low roof guard and as the two bandit woodsmen closed upon him, one of the few positions he still felt comfortable in after the loss of his hand. As they bore down upon him, the Inquisitor lashed out with an undercut thrust, slicing the first brother in a vertical arc up the side. Transitioning into an ox guard as the blade rose, the second brother was pierced clean through the shoulder by the point of the Valyrian steel blade. He dislodged the blade and took a defensive step backwards, breathing not even labored as his two would-be attackers bled from their fresh wounds.
"He's a damned knight!" Eustace barked "Use your heads you fools!"

At the sound of the commotion outside, Muriel's hand curled around the handle of a kitchen knife, taking a step towards Vira. The dragonseed, acting quickly, attempted to hurl the cast iron pot of stew in the hag's face. Unfortunately, the heave cast-iron cauldron merely clanged to the floor as the bastard's grip slipped, the stew merely pouring out harmlessly on the floor. The old woman looked down at the steaming stew pooling around her skirts, then back up at the young woman with a sigh that she would have to make a new meal, taking a step forward with the blade raised.

The sounds of the commotion outside intensified Vira's rage. "It seems that guest right counts for nothing among you outlaws!" Vira spat at Muriel, disappointed that the stew had not caught the old crone in the face. She bent down and grabbed the woman's broom from where it stood propped against the wall, and held it at the ready. "Don't take another step forward with that blade. Who are those men outside? Are you a catspaw for Beatrix of the Briar?"

"Use your heads, you fools," Maekar called tauntingly as he easily drove the two men back. In the back of his mind, he realized that for the first time since the Dragonbane took his hand he was actually fighting for his life instead of training. He felt exhilarated, like he could fight ten such men at a time.
"If you want to reconsider this course, perhaps we will all walk away from this alive," he added, waiting for them to charge him again.

The two bandits reevaluate their approach and charge in once more, all bravado with no skill. As the first hefts his axe above his head, Maekar goes low with a horizontal slash, opening his belly. The man bellowed in pain, attempting to stuff his intestines in desperately with his free hand. The other brother was met with Vigilance's dragonbone pommel swinging up to shatter his nose, before the Inquisitor drove the Valyria Steel point down, clean through his attacker's leather boot. As blood spurted out from his nose in foot, the man's cry of pain rivaled his brother's.

In what would have been quite a comical display, had the calamity had any witnesses, the old woman chased Vira around the hovel with knife raised life a nursery rhyme brought to life, the young bastard swatting her away with a broom. The old hag had seemed to display some recognition at the mention of Beatrix, but it could have simply been annoyance.

"Right, STOP!" Vira said in exasperation. "I have no wish to destroy your home if you are innocent, Muriel, and I have coin enough to repay you for your ruined cauldron and stew."

"You boys finished?" Maekar asked, looking from Tweedledee to Tweedledum and shifting into a low guard. "You might even survive, if those wounds are seen to quickly," he added, addressing the second brother. For the first one, whose intestines were spilling out of his belly, it was just a matter of time.
"Call your boys off, grandfather," Maekar said, his eye flicking to the old man. "Unless you want them both to die this day."
