Visenya snickered. "A dark and mysterious foreign stranger! How romantic! You should take him to bed, mama," she said candidly, smiling cheekily all the while.

Jeyne laughed briefly. "It might be amusing to have a man in my bed, but I will make no rash decisions. It's hard for me to trust anyone at all, especially a foreigner."

"Come on, mama," she said with a small note of exasperation in her voice. "You don't have to share all your secrets with him, just let him warm your sheets a little!"

"I may do. I haven't decided yet. I am certainly not going to jump into bed with the first man who smiles at me. That is foolish. I cannot afford to do foolish things. None of us can. We have to be careful."

Visenya's smile faded, wondering if that was a jab on her mothers part. She quickly decided her mother didn't know or would not press the issue. "He's far from the first, but you're right. Caution." She had not been cautious, especially not when she let the inquisitor spill his seed inside her.

"Yes. I am so used to living in fear I have forgotten what it is like to be happy," Jeyne confessed. "That is the sad truth of my life, Visenya. I pray that it will not always be yours, or your sister's, or your brother's."

She felt bad for her mother in truth, then. Even in the direst of times Visenya would not let the bad overpower her. She was determined to one day find happiness, although it seemed far away. Sometimes she felt her mother had given up trying or even searching for her happiness. "Mama, I've been afraid, but I can't let it get in the way. You'll be happy again, I know it. Maybe sooner than you think." She squeezed her mothers hand.

Jeyne sighed. "I hope you are right, my dear. I truly do, though it is no easy thing to believe, not now. Time will tell. I shall get to know Master Delinaal a little better before I decide what to do about him. I pray he does not tire of my company before I am ready to decide."

Visenya watched her mother's face in the mirror. "Mama, you're past thirty but you're still one of the most beautiful ladies at court. He won't tire of you quickly, I guarantee it." She spoke candidly of her mother' sage, which wasn't polite, but she thought it was what she needed to hear. Her mother sorely needed a vote of confidence and Visenya hoped to give her one.

"Well, we shall have to see, won't we?" Jeyne was gazing at herself in the mirror, thinking. "I would like Master Delinaal to court me before I fall into bed with him. I have missed that feeling of being wanted, of a man paying me special attentions. I want that more than I want a man in my bed, truly. I want to feel desirable, but not like I am just a thing for a man to slake his lust upon."

"It is nice, isn't it?" Visenya smiled, thinking of being chased by Westerling and the others. "I am sure you will be able to find someone devoted to you again. You're such a wonderful mother, and I think you were a good wife to my father."

Jeyne leaned in and hugged Visenya. "You are good to say so, my love. I did the best I could in a difficult situation, and it has only got worse. And now I see yourself and Rhaegar at odds with one another, and I hate it. Your brother tries to hard to be the head of the family, but he seems to forget that he cannot make decisions for the family alone. We are doomed if we cannot work together."

"Rhaegar thinks his opinions are the only opinions, and his ideas are the best ideas, all because he has a cock between his legs," Visenya said viciously. "The head of a family understands that it is made of individuals and persuades them to do as he wills, not forces them. My brother and the King are not so dissimilar in that regard."

Jeyne had to laugh at that. "That is very true. I did not want to see it that way, but it is true nonetheless. And it will be to your brother's disadvantage, if he does not learn to control his feelings better. The truth is a dangerous thing in this court, my love. Did you know that Rhaegar is opposed to my acquaintance with Master Delinaal? My own thought on the matter is that we need friends, and they had better be people the king cannot control."

"He still wants to send you to Yronwood is my guess. Or perhaps he is jealous of his mother's attentions going elsewhere." She sighed and got up, starting to shed her ruined gown in favor of a wrap suitable for bed. "I think Master Delinaal may be more than he appears, and I think that you should continue your acquaintance no matter what."

"I agree. I need to know him better before I make any decisions, but I do not believe he would offer me harm. And, well, I am still a woman, and often lonely. Why should I not have a friend of my own? a other matter, I have told Rhaegar several times that I have no intention of leaving my children at court without me. I love my father and the rest of my family but the three of you mean far more to me." Jeyne smiled sadly. "Goodnight, Visenya."

Lord Sergio Delinaal knocked on the doors of the good Lady.

Visenya was in her rooms with Lissa, the maidservant she shared with her sister, who had been combing and dressing her hair. Wrapping her silk robe tighter about her shoulders, she had Lissa answer the door and then dismissed the girl. "Lord Sergio Delinaal, what a surprise," she said, watching his reflection in the mirror.

"Lady Visenya." Sergio walked over to her, and kissed her hand. "It is a pleasure. Your beauty is without peer." He looked around the room idly as he stood with her.

She smiled at him. "So this is the man my mother spoke so highly of. A flatterer if there ever was one."

Sergio replied, "What is called a flattery in King's Landing is merely courtesy in Braavos." He replied and smiled back at her, "Your mother spoke highly of you as well."

"Yes, I have heard that women are quite valued in your city, and that to insult certain of them would mean death. Is this true?"
She got up and went to her collection of decanters, pouring a glass for herself. "Will you take wine, my lord?"

"I would love some wine." Sergio replied, "And yes Death walks in Braavos. It can come a calling at the snap of a finger." He snapped his fingers.

"It is much the same here in Westeros, I fear. There is no place where death does not stalk the highborn and the low." She held out a glass of red wine to him, finally taking the time to examine the man who fancied her mother. He was very handsome, in a dark way, with a cast to his features that reminded her a little of the Dornishmen of Rhoynish descent.

Sergio took the wine and sipped at it before smiling. at her, "This has quite a rich flavor." He gave her the same thorough appraisal that she had given him. "Death comes for all, it is the one link all men, and woman have." He motioned towards her, "Even ones with your striking eyes." His common tongue only held a slight accent.
