Aegon complied, ducking out of the way of the second projectile as wine spattered across his clothing. He walked out, closing the door behind him. That could have gone better, Aegon reflected, though he had no one to blame but himself.

///////////////////////////////
Visenya snuck through the Red Keep and back to her rooms after her day of "flying" with Maekar. Her dress was ruined, the silk crumpled and stained here and there with grass and...other things. She tried not to make too much noise as she went past her mother's room and her sister's and at last made it to hers.
She lit some candles and looked at herself in the mirror. It was a disaster. Her curls were mussed and tangled...was that a twig she saw? (it was, she confirmed as she plucked it out) and then the gown besides. She sighed. At least it was night, and in the shadowed hallways such things were not so apparent, or so she hoped.

But Visenya's hopes were dashed as the door creaked open and her mother stood there, looking tired.
"Visenya! Sweetling, where have you been? Why is your hair such a mess? And your dress! What have you been doing?"

She spun around. "Mama!"
She quickly attempted to collect her thoughts and hoped her mother wouldn't notice the worst of things. "I went flying, with the Knight Inquisitor. We landed and had a bit of lunch in the kings wood."

Jeyne's eyes narrowed. "Why with the Inquisitor? Which one?" Not that she thought it mattered either way. "Could you not find someone more pleasant to fly with? You don't normally come home so disordered after a little flight."

"It was Ser...Lord Maekar, mama. He was the only one I could find to take me, and besides he's actually very kind." She smiled to her reflection in the mirror as she dragged a comb through her long hair. "I had the loveliest time with him."

Jeyne laughed bitterly. "I can't believe that. Don't say you are foolish enough to fall in love with him, my sweet. He is an Inquisitor, he has done many vile things on the king's command. You cannot possibly overlook that."

She blushed deeply. "I said he was kind, and that I enjoyed his company, not that I loved him and wished to be his bride. Besides, he acted on the kings orders....he cannot have agreed with them." She couldn't meet her mothers eyes. "He is too gentle for that, in his heart of hearts."

Jeyne's expression did not change as her suspicions grew. "I will not believe him kind. He is Maegor's son. I daresay he will grow to be much like his father. This connection will bring you no joy."

"Perhaps not...but it was only a day of flying. You know it has to be someone else with a dragon who takes me, and i could not find Princess Daenya, nor anyone else," she said defensively.

"I know. But I mislike the notion of you growing close to an Inquisitor," Jeyne sighed. "I do not trust them. I trust almost nobody here. Do not be naive, Visenya, please. He was probably toying with you."

"Why do you worry about me, mother? I know my way about court, and the intricacies of the game of houses. I'm not Elseyris, who would trust you as you put a knife in her back. What if he would be my friend?" What if he would be more, Visenya's eyes said. "It could be useful to have a friend in the Inquisitor. Maker is not Trajan."

"I know he is not, but I will worry about you now I know you have befriended him. I cannot rest easy knowing that you are alone with him. It is said that the Inquisitors were involved in Princess Aemy's death. Does that not frighten you? If a princess can die, it is even more likely that they might kill you."

She pouted and paused in brushing out her hair. "Mama, don't worry. Everything will be okay. I'm much smarter than Aemy ever was. I know how to handle myself. I'm also a good deal prettier, and...and..." She realized she couldn't think of anything else. She had been like the Princess in many ways, not that she knew, nor would she ever, now. Both thought much too highly of themselves for their own good. "I won't get myself killed, gods no." With child was more likely, she thought, and she grinned in amusement at the thought.

"Be careful." Jeyne took the brush and began to attend to Visenya's hair, as she had done when her daughter was a child. "My dear, there is no good to be found in this awful place. This is a prison as secure as Ghaston Grey, for all the silks and velvets and rich food. I hate it, having to wonder just how closely we are being watched."

Not too closely, or I would be dead by now, thought Visenya as she submitted to her mothers gentle hands. "Did you love my father? Do you miss him? Do you ever get terribly lonely?" She asked, changing the subject. She did not want to be reminded what a farce her position was within the castle.

"Of course I miss him, and this is a lonely place for me," Jeyne murmured. "I loved your father, of course I did. I would not have agreed to leave my home if not for love. Many marriages begin without love, of course, but Kings Landing was hardly the best place for a Dornishwoman to be. So I would not have gone, otherwise."

"Do you think you might marry again, ever? I would not be upset if you did. You've been a widow three years, and we children aren't really children anymore. Not even Elseyris, though it's easy to forget from time to time." She sighed. "I wish she were still a child. Sometimes I wish I were."

"You would all be safer if you were still children," Jeyne agreed, gently stroking the brush through Visenya's hair. "I would like to marry, but it will not be easy to find someone suitable, let alone someone I might actually care for. It could be worse, though. The king desires me. I'm lucky he hasn't forced his attentions on me."

"Does he? Might it not be easier to just go to his bed?" She asked seriously.

Jeyne gasped in horror, the brush snagging painfully on Visenya's hair in the process. "No! Don't be ridiculous. I don't want him touching me, let alone inside me. I would rather he forget I even exist."

She agreed with her mother, but was it not sometimes useful to be a woman and to allow a man to use you? If he wanted her badly enough, she could use that to her advantage. But Jeyne was not Visenya. "I agree with you there. I cannot imagine any woman wanting the King. Not even his wife. But I so,entires thing that the influence one could get from going to bed with a man would be useful."

"With the right man, yes That will not work with a man who sees nothing but revulsion and hatred on my face. The man who slew my own dear husband. For the right man, I would consider it. But not the king. Never the king," Jeyne vowed.

She nodded solemnly, well, nodded as best she could with her mothers hands in her hair.
"How about that Braavosi I have seen around of late?" She winked at her mother's reflection in the mirror.

"Oh, I have only just met him. And he is not from these lands. I am not sure I wish to go and live in Braavos. But I hope he and I might become friends," Jeyne murmured. "I know so little about him, though."
