Maekar is in the Red Keep's yard, not training, but standing on the battlements of the gatehouse, looking out into the city.

Visenya had wandered up and down what seemed like the entirety of the Red Keep searching for another Targaryen. She had gotten it in her head to visit Silverwing. Just as she was beginning to get entirely discouraged, she found herself in the yard and facing the back of a semi-familiar figure. It was Maekar. She hesitated, not sure if she should even venture to ask one of the King's Inquisitors for a favor. In the end, she decided that Maekar was not Trajan, and went ahead.
"Ah, pardon me, Ser Maekar," she murmured, sidling up to him.

The Knight Inquisitor had been staring out over the city, though as she approached he turned to face her, a small smile touching the corner of his mouth. He was simply dressed in black, and over his ruined eye he wore a patch of the same color, with a tiny red dragon embroidered in the center. Vigiliance hung at his hip, and though his left arm was no longer in a sling, the white of bandages could still be seen at the end of his sleeve.
"Good morning, Lady Visenya," he said in a softer voice than she would have expected. "Can I help you with something today?"

She was surprised by the gentle tone of his voice, and his kind words. Maybe she had had no reason to be afraid after all. "I was wondering..." her words died in her throat as she realised that his hand was gone, and his eye as well. It seemed even the most terrifying of men could be prey in war. She cleared her throat, and quickly ceased her staring at his missing parts. "Sorry, I was wondering if you would be so kind as to escort me to the Dragonpit this afternoon? I wouldn't bother you, only you're the first one I've seen all morning," she said apologetically.

"It would not bother me at all, Lady Visenya," he replied courteously, remembering the rules about Aenar's children and their dragons. "I ought to see to Cyrax anyway; I do not often leave him in the dragon pit and he is unaccustomed to being confined. His wounds are not fully healed, however, so I have not let him roam free such as he would prefer."
He led the way down into the courtyard gestured for a pair of Goldcloaks to follow them, before pausing at the gates of the Red Keep, and offering her his right arm.

She took his arm, grateful it was not the maimed one, and wondered at his kindness. He was still the King's man, through and through, of that she had no doubt, but perhaps not so frightful as she had previously thought. She found herself eyeing him sidelong. He had a softness to him, she decided.
"What happened to him in Oldtown, Ser, if I may be so bold to ask? I regret to hear of my siblings' dragons' deaths, and of Azuria's."

Walking alongside him on his right side, it occurred to Visenya that she was in his blind spot. "The Faith and the Citadel had all sorts of queer weapons they used against us. There was a massive harpoon on a chain at the top of the Hightower, which they used to spear dragons in the sky and pull then down into range of their ballistae. They also had a substance, Prince Aegon told me it was made of whale oil though how I do not know, but it exploded likeā¦" he struggled to find the right words. "I have never seen its like before, truly. Cyrax took two of their exploding bolts to the back, and a piece of shrapnel pierced my helm's visor."
"He has recovered well enough to fly, we flew here, though slowly and in stages. I cannot imagine he was pleased to find confinement at the end of the journey," he added with a frown.

Visenya shuddered and pulled herself closer to Maekar's side before quickly remembering with whom she walked arm in arm. "Poor thing," she murmured, and he was not sure if she meant him or the dragon. "So Cyrax will recover fully, then, that is good. I suppose after 80 years at war, the Faith was well prepared to face dragons. I pray we never go to war again. Ever."

"It is always there, in the background. Even when it seems as though things are at peace, somewhere, somebody is at war, even within the realm. Landed knights and petty lords war against each other over mills and market-towns, and their liege lords war against each other for the fealty of the lesser lords," Maekar replied, and it almost sounded like he was sad about that fact. He didn't react when she drew closer to him, and when they reached the bottom of Aegon's Hill he led her toward the Iron Gate and up onto the city walls.
"I have no desire to pass through Flea Bottom today, and this ought to be faster, with a better view besides," he said, when they reached the top of the wall. He couldn't actually see the view as they walked north along the wall. To their left, Flea Bottom stretched out like an ugly sore on the city, while on the right, outside the walls, the sea crashed against cliffs and the Rosby Road ran northward into light woods.
"I imagine you are not often able to see your dragon, Lady Visenya?" he asked carefully.

"Oh." She had never thought of that. She hardly thought of anything that did not concern herself or others in the Red Keep. The castle, small as it was in the larger scheme of things, was her entire world. There was nothing she could think of to say that would not make her seem entirely ignorant (which she certainly was, though she did not wish to let the entire world know of her shortcomings, few as they were).
"I would not be sorry to miss it either, Ser," she said, glad for the change in subject. "It is such a wretched place, full of wretched people. I know they can't help it, but it is unpleasant all the same." She looked away from the blighted area of the city that was Flea Bottom and toward the sea. That was beautiful, in all its fury. And even better; it was clean.
"Unfortunately not. Poor Silverwing, she is so often kept confined and chained. She deserves a chance to stretch her wings. More than she is given, certainly."

"That is unfortunate," Maekar replied. "Dragons were not made to be so confined; I have never liked the Dragonpit. Even I feel confined when I am inside it."
He paused for a moment, and Visenya got the impression he was choosing his words carefully. "Your brother and sister both acted with valor and courage during the battle at Oldtown, despite losing their dragons. Perhaps his grace the King will give you greater access to yours, now that the war is ended," he added.

"It is not so bad, I suppose, not to me anyway. But then, I have spent the past three years thus; confined." She spoke simply and matter-of-factually. She looked up at him, disappointed to be greeted only by his grim-looking eyepatch. "I doubt he would, though it would be kind of him to do so. Unfortunately, great as our King is, I do not think it is in his nature to be kind."

"It does not seem to be so," Maekar murmured quietly. He did not envy Aenar's children, suffering for their father's treachery, though he still did not particularly trust them himself. He could, however, imagine himself in Visenya's place, so confined, and he did not think he would find the situation tolerable at all. They reached the Dragon Gate an descended to ground level. When they entered the Dragonpit itself, several of the men on duty outside scowled at the King's bastard but said nothing.
"I do not think they like me much," he said with a small chuckle. "Cyrax is not particularly pleasant to those who are not me. Perhaps your Silverwing would deign to meet a stranger? Unless you would rather spend your time with her alone, that is," he added politely.

Of course they didn't like him. They were probably terrified of him, as she had been. The black cloak of Inquisitor combined with his reputation and now his frightening eyepatch... "You could come, if you liked. Silverwing will leave you alone, most likely. If you're lucky, she might even let you rub her nose, though you might need to bring her a treat for that."

Maekar chuckled slightly, at the image of treating a dragon as one might treat a dog. "Well I am afraid I brought no rabbits with me," he replied lightly, taking a guess at what one might give a dragon as a treat. "Perhaps another day, I shall come better prepared," he added, with a small smile.

She giggled. "I suppose you might think its silly, but I always like to bring her something, since I hardly get to come down here. I didn't get anything today but usually I bring some sort of offal from the kitchens. If I wrap it well enough, it doesn't leak."
After a while of walking down the torchlit corridors of the Pit, they came to the cave of Silverwing. Visenya entered first, calling out to her dragon to emerge from the depths of the cave. "I'm here. I don't think we'll go flying today, but I've come to see you." The large white dragon was easy to see even in the gloom of the Pit. She came to the fore and bent her head so Visenya could touch her. "Maekar, you can come now. Isn't she beautiful?" Visenya had always been of the opinion that her own dragon was among the most beautiful of the beasts, with all the grace of a creature many times smaller.

"Indeed she is, my lady," Maekar replied, stepping forward in a few smooth steps, standing with his back straight and without fear. He had always been a great admirer of House Targaryen's dragons, their ferocious strength mixed with a subtle grace was indeed beautiful in a way and though Maekar would never find himself articulating such a thought, it was still there. He met the dragon's gaze for several long moments, before he looked to Visenya and smiled. "You must be very brave, to have traveled to Dragonstone to tame her. How old were you?" he asked.

"Oh, I was but nine." She blushed and did not mention that in fact Silverwing was the one who had tamed her, in a way. "I had an egg when I was small, just as my sister and brother, but it never hatched, poor thing." She stroked the dragon's nose idly, remembering.

"Very brave indeed," he replied. "I was but sixteen when I bonded Meraxes, and I was quite terrified."

"Meraxes must have been terrifying, though. Such a legendary creature, and to have been able to tame her!"
"But, I am misleading you, I am afraid. I did not venture to Dragonstone to tame a dragon. I had merely wandered somewhere I shouldn't have, some territory of some dragon that probably would have burned me alive had Silverwing not come at the last second to chase it off. Can you imagine the look on my father's face when I showed up on dragonback?" She giggled, remembering.

The only expression that Maekar could picture on her father's face was the greusome visage he'd worn after crashing to the ground aback Vermithor, three years prior. He smiled nonetheless, however, and replied with a chuckle. "I imagine he was quite surprised, and proud as well. Who could not be so, after seeing a nine year old girl disappear and then return on dragonback."

"My mother was horrified. She never quite got used to the dragons, though I am sure that is part of what caused her to fall in love with my father."
"Now tell me, Ser, what has caused you to be so kind and accommodating this afternoon? I always thought you were the strong silent type."

"Am I not always?" Maekar asked, with mock effrontery, before losing his composure and chuckling. "I was taught to be kind to women, despite what actions their father may have taken. Though my own father often commands me to take actions that areā¦ unkind, it is not something that I relish," he replied seriously.

"I quite appreciate that sentiment, though I am sure your good father would disagree." Visenya patted Silverwing on the nose again before the dragon realized there would be no flying and lost interest in the people. "Why do you keep the job, then, if you dislike it so?"

"Despite the taint of your father, your name is still Targaryen. It is different for a bastard; all I have, is due to the King. But for his will, I would have nothing," Maekar replied. "It is my duty to serve, I can do nothing else."
"Would you like to fly, Lady Visenya? I will accompany you, if you do," he added with a small smile.
