Since much of Oldtown is a smoldering ruin, the army camp has been maintained outside the walls in much the same place it was during the battle, a short distance west of the patch of land where Azuria's corpse still lay and where the Dragonbane had died. Despite the clear irritation of the royals, people had begun to refer to it as 'Hector's Stand', and there was little anyone could do to prevent the name from colloquially catching fire. The army camp was well-ordered, though the sick-tents took up nearly a full third of the entire camp. Nearly fifteen hundred royal soldiers had been killed, with twice as many still alive but wounded in some capacity or another. Not quite a fifth of the royal army was dead, but less than half of the original 8,600 men were still fighting-ready.
The horses were picketed on the south side of the camp, on the opposite side from the dragon field which was a large empty field the north.

Maekar strode through the camp, making rounds and inspecting everything, until he had seen everything. He then sought out a captain of one of the unwounded companies. "You, soldier," he said, striding up to him. He was till bandaged, at the left hand and across his right eye, but he wore his armor save for the plates that would go on his left arm and the helm, and Vigiliance hung in its sheath on his left hip.
"You are to gather a detail of men to prepare the pyres for the dead dragons," he said authoritatively. He handed the man a small folded note with his seal stamped onto it. "Comandeer some want timber you need, my seal will get it for you. There are two," he added, somewhat stating the obvious; one would never be too redundant when giving orders, just in case.
"Azuria, and Nenyan, he said, pointing to them respectively. "Build a scaffolding of wood over each, and then surround each corpse with lighter wood and brush.; Nenyan is yet small enough to be raised, but Azuria will have to have to lie on the ground. They will be given to the fire, as fits a dragon in death. Make sure I am notified when everything has been prepared, am I clear?" he asked finally.

A young boy searches the camp and picks up a large object which he straps to his back. Then he looks for the dragon corpses. Deciding that Azuria is the biggest of the dead dragons, he starts hacking at her scales.

Maekar sees this, and draws Vigilance as he approaches the boy, pointing the sword at him, "What the fuck do you think you're doing?"

The boy yelped and backed again. Maekar thinks he has seen the boy squiring for someone but he can't remember who.
"Please! No. I got made to do it. Will kill me if I don't."

"Are you a squire? For whom?" Maekar asked suspiciously, lowering the sword slightly but not entirely. "Who ordered you to desecrate a dragon's corpse?"

"She did. I'm Ser Duncan's squire," he said. "Ser Duncan Florent. I was, anyway. Please, she'll kill me if I don't get them."

"These dragons are the property of his grace the King, even in death; if you wish to scavenge from the dead, take from our enemies," he snapped, sheathing his sword. "Piss off, or I'll beat you black and blue before sending you back to Ser Duncan."

The boy is nervous but it seems that Maekar's infirmities have made him see a little less threatening for now. The boy bows and scurries away.
"Sorry, ser," he says as he goes.

Maekar watched the boy depart with a frown. He ordered a detail of guards to protect each of the dragons' corpses from looters while their pyres were being constructed, and then sent a man off to inform Prince Aemon that a lad who squired for Ser Duncan Florent had been seen stealing scales off of Azuria's corpse, if he cared to inquire further.

When the Pyres were completed, Maekar ordered them lit. There was no ceremony for the dead dragons, but he did remain, standing vigil over both corpses as they burned. It took a long time, far longer than it would have taken to burn a human, even one of comparable size to a dragon, like do their fiery nature and innate resistance to heat.
When it was finished, however, and only charred skeletons remained of the two great beasts, Maekar ordered the bones to be collected and bundled, and delivered to his pavilion all save for the skulls; those were to be packed carefully and returned to King's Landing, as was customary with deceased dragons.

The day after the dragons' cremation, Elseyris ventured out from her tent, and headed towards the central area of the camp, hoping to find someone to appraise her of what had transpired over the 3 days she had been recuperating. The only visitors she had received were a field maester and Daenya, neither of whom had told her much. She knew that there were likely to be pyres built for hers and Aemon's dragons now, and wanted to find out about their progress. She soon spotted Maekar, and approached with a respectful nod;
"Ser, can you spare a moment?"

"Lady Elseyris," Maekar said respectfully. His arm was still in a sling, and the stump where his left hand once had been was heavily bandaged, but most of the bandages over his face had come off, and only a single strip of linen bound the pad that covered his empty right eye socket.
"What can I do for you this evening," he asked.

"I was wondering if you could tell me what preparations have been made for Nenyan & Azuria. I am rather behind on camp matters, I was unconscious for longer than I had expected," she said, with some embarrassment, feeling quite pathetic and having not pushed herself out sooner.
"I expected that pyres would likely be built. Are they ready? I would like to see my dragon off, so to speak. Azuria too, really, since she was his mother."

"The pyres were lit yesterday evening, my lady," Maekar replied quietly. "The Dragons' bodies were given to the flames, as is our custom, though their bones I ordered packed for transport back to King's Landing." Elsey knew that it was customary for the skulls of dead dragons to be kept in the Red Keep.

Elsey's eyes flared angrily, though she stopped herself from raising her voice, instead sounding cold and annoyed;
"Why did no-one send word to me? Surely that would have been common courtesy!"

"You were unconscious in the sick-tents, as I recall," Maekar replied evenly, not reacting to her outburst of emotion. "There was also a question of time. My men had to chase off a number of looters attempting to desecrate the dragons' corpses, likely seeking to make a few coins selling scavenged scales or teeth. I decided it was proper to light the pyres when they were completed, rather than waiting and leaving the bodies open to scavengers for mere courtesy," he replied. His tone was not angry or cruel, but neither was it in any way warm or empathic.

She folded her arms;
"It would not have taken long to send someone for me. I would have gone to the pyres immediately, regardless of my state. If the damned maester hadn't kept taking each time I woke up as a reason to further sedate me, I wouldn't have even needed fetching, I'd have been helping to build the bloody pyres. I doubt Prince Aemon was left uninformed," she growled, more angry with the situation than anyone in particular.
She let out an exasperated, sigh, looking at the ground, then back up to Maekar, her face a little softer, and sad;
"Look, I'm sorry, I understand why you did that, but... well... would you not be angry to be excluded from the funeral of someone so dear to you?"

"Prince Aemon was also injured and in the sick-tents, and he was rather outraged when I informed him that a boy had been driven away while trying to steal scales of Azuria's corpse," Maekar replied. "I did not imagine he would raise objection to lighting the pyres as soon as they were ready, to prevent such from happening again."
His expression softened as he met her two eyes with his one. "Nenyan died in battle, with honor, which is all that the King asks of any of us. He recieved the honor he was due in death, an honor that was denied Meraxes, whose bones we were forced to leave to be scavenged by the Dornish," he added, and Elsey remembered that Maekar too knew the loss of his dragon being killed.

"I said I understood, Maekar. I am not arguing with you. What is done is done, and, as you say, better that than having them scavenged. It's just..."
Her face was flushed with shame at allowing herself to become emotional, especially in front of someone who had been through more and worse. Her look was one of earnest, and poorly suppressed distress;
"... You know what this is like, this feeling. How long does it go on?"
She expected he would know she was speaking of loss, of grief.

"Forever," Maekar murmured in a small voice. "Eventually it becomes a part of you, one you barely even notice anymore, but it is always there. Every man, or woman, has a different bond with their dragon. Some have been known to go mad after having such a bond broken, while others merely move on," he added gently.

Elseyris pondered Maekar's words gravely for several moments, in silence.
"Well, I do not think I have gone mad, so I suppose that is worth something," she said, with a dry smile that did not reach her sad eyes.
She gazed passively into the distance for a few moments, then looked back at him;
"I am sorry about your wounds. I saw what happened. Your bravery is inspiring."
Her voice was flat, but sincere.

"I did my duty, such as any man would do," Maekar replied quietly, though Else could see his remaining hand move up to his eye, fingers tracing the outline of the bandages. It seemed to be an unconscious motion, as if he was unaware he was doing it.
"I am sorry, that a greater effort was not made to wake you."

"It is alright, really. I should not have been brusque with you, it is I who ought to be sorry, and I am. All of this is, well, new to me. I have not been as good a soldier as I should have, I am ashamed to admit."
She glanced down awkwardly, shuffling her feet a little.
"No matter. Is there anything I can do to make myself useful, now that I am here?"

Maekar shook his head. "We have matters well in hand, until the Prince returns from the Arbor. With luck, he will be able to talk Redwyne into bending the knee, where the Queen failed to force him to his knees. Then the war will be well and truly over. There is much work to be done, but keeping the men busy is good for them. If you are still spoiling for a task, when your wounds have healed, I am sure we can find something," he replied with a small smile. It occured to Elsey that this was the most time Maekar had ever spent speaking to anyone in her family.
