Kesi wanted to weep herself at the sight of them. She let the child have the coins with no protest.
"People are saying slave trade is bad for slaves, but least they are being fed and warmed." She said, to Brusco. "This is not being allowed."

"King will not listen to foreign sorceress," he answered. "The septons help but the king does not like the Seven Gods of Westeros."

"I am knowing this." Kesi said. "I am not being stupid. Just..." She trailed off and shrugged.

"It is the way of Westeros," Brusco told her. "You cannot save these children."

"Maybe Westeros way is this time being wrong." Kesi said, rejoining him, the first real time that she had said bad about her adopted country.

"Not for us to say," Brusco said. "Find some lord who agrees with you. Someone the king trusts."

"Most people that King is trusting is not fan on me." She said, with a half smile. She glanced back and stopped walking.
"Oh." She said, seeing a boy that looked the same age as her son had been when he had died. Kesi twisted her bracelet again, just staring at the child.

The boy was smaller and dirtier than the others, with tear tracks across his face. She saw several bruises across his face and the boy's hand bore some nasty scars.

Kesi stopped twisting the bracelet and moved towards the boy.
She knelt when she reached him so as not to scare him away.

He looked up at her.
"No. No hurt."
His eyes were big and white and frightened as he backed away

Kesi's eyes filled with tears.
"Is being alright." She said, putting her hand on her leg with her palm towards him. "Will you let me be looking?"
Her voice was very soft and she made no other movement.

"No look," he said, faint but firm. "No like strange woman. Leave alone. Want food."
He backed away from her.

Kesi kept her eyes on the boy.
"Brusco, please, be finding something little?" She asked her guard. "My name is being Kesi." She told the child.

Brusco nodded and headed off but not without a warning murmur about cutpurses and beggars.
The small boy crossed his arms across his skinny torso. "Name be Gendry."

Kesi managed a small smile, seeming just for the child. "I am thinking that you could grow to be bigger then me... Bigger then even Brusco."

She saw the barest hint of a smile but then his face was sad again. "Don't know. Might never get bigger. Children die here a lot. Hanged or stabbed or starved, most like."

Kesi moved so that her legs didnt go dead as she knelt.
"Children are dying in many places for many things." She said. "In a city near where I am from they are given to their Gods. I am not thinking that I could ever be doing that." She wrinkled up her nose.
"Your hand is looking like it is hurting. Will you let me look? I am being good with hurts."

"If you want."
He showed her his and, which was covered in blisters that looked like they came from a burn. But it would take time to heal up.

Something passed over Kesi's face.
"How are you doing this?" she asked, she searched in her bag for some water that she knew she had in there, to clean the burn.

Gendry looked at his hand. "Went to pot shop for a bowl o' brown. Some boy shoved me 'gainst the pot. Said was going to toss me in to add some fresh meat to the next batch o' brown."

Kesi found her water and held it out.
"Pour it over, to clean." She said. "That is not being nice. I am being glad that you are not adding meat to pot."
The boy reminded her of her son, with the big blue eyes.
"Fire is hurting lots, I know."

He nodded and clumsily poured water over his injured hand. "Hurts a lot," he agreed. "It's everyone for hisself here."

"Is like that up in Keep too." Kesi said with a small smile, with the air of confiding something important. "It will hurt less in time. There is not anything I can do for you here, all that will help is at my room"
