"Yes. Perhaps you had better elope, if you find the right man," Taena suggested. "If you choose well, His Grace can have no cause to object. But who can know the mind of a king? Not me."
She thought a moment.
"No doubt the young lords will come sniffing around the princesses soon enough. Make sure they see you too."

"There is no way for them to avoid seeing me," Visenya said, the full measure of her former haughtiness returned to her voice. "Aemy should be harpooned if she happened by Ib, Daenya is a strange child, but a child just the same...it seemes my only competition is Rhaena, who seems to prefer a masculine role to a feminine one. Hardly any competition at all!" she sneered.

Taena's smile was forced and didn't reach her eyes. "But they are the king's daughters. That is enough to give anyone pause. Please be careful what you say, there are whisperers everywhere and I don't want you to get into trouble."

"You are right, and right again. You are perceptive, and I forget myself." Her back was still ramrod straight, and her face said that even the kings daughters were below Visenya Targaren. "Please forgive me, Taena dear."

"there's nothing to forgive. Just be careful. I'd like us to be friends," Taena said.

"I will be. I would also like to be friends. One can never have too many." She held out her hand to touch Taena's fingertips as they rode side by side beneath the gates to the stableyard of the Red Keep.

"I agree." Taena smiled over at Visenya. "I have always hoped for more friends."

"Good, then that is another thing we two have in common." She grinned as she dismounted. Stablehands came from nowhere to strip the tack from her horse and lead the creature off to its stall. "I'll go wash my face. Will you sit near me at the feast, Taena?"

"Of course I will," Taena promised. She dismounted. "That's what friends are for."

Visenya grinned. "Of course. I will see you at the feast then." With that last, she turned and left, pleased to have befriended hear cousin, even if she were only a bastard.
