"You aren't missing anything, avoiding him. Just as I suppose I am missing little having never spoken to your sister." Visenya shot Taena a cheeky grin. "I'm thankful I haven't earned such a by name, either."

"So am I. Grandmother says that Adara is not the brightest spoon in the drawer," Taena said with a laugh. "She's not worth your time, truly. All she does is drink and sleep with lots of men. That sounds slightly boring to me. And probably not very healthy either. You and I can be more discerning."

"Drinking is fun, men are fun, but everything in moderation or it becomes commonplace and tiresome," agreed Visenya, tucking a strand of blond hair behind her ear. "Tell me, what is your favorite thing to do to pass the time?"

They rode through the city gates.
"You'll think me deadly dull, I fear, but I love archery," Taena confided. "I love the feel of the longbow, the way the arrows fly through the air. I even enjoy making my own arrows. Have you ever tried it?"

"I've shot a crossbow once or twice, and thrown a dagger or twice, but I confess my aim is not the best and I prefer tasks that leave me decidedly less sweaty. I can see the use of knowing one's way about a weapon, though. Perhaps I will watch you sometime and you can show me what is what."
"Myself, I have naught to do but read the same novels and rearrange my jewelry and cosmetics in their chests. Oh, and flatter every tiresome courtier that looks in my direction. I am sure that is much more boring than a bit of archery."

"It would be to me, but I'm sure it suits you well enough. Although, perhaps you could get some new books one day?" Taena suggested. "Are you dreadfully bored, Visenya? We shall have to see about finding a way for you to do some new things if you don't have enough to do. I would be happy to show you the longbow, if you like. I ave never used a crossbow."

"No," she said with a small smile. "I exaggerate. It isn't so bad as all that, especially when the court is full and no one is away on campaign or anything. Still, I would be glad to attempt the longbow. That is, if you promise not to laugh at my failure. A crossbow you just crank and aim, but a longbow seems to require more skill than I posess."

"Oh, it's just practice," Taena said. "You could easily learn, if you want. If you can shoot a crossbow with some accuracy, why shouldn't you manage a longbow too?" She smiled as they rode through the city streets. "And please, I would never laugh at you."

They rode past admiring and envious small folk on their way up the hill to the Red Keep, but Visenya kept her eyes forward or on her companion. She was having too good a time to concern herself with those people. "Some accuracy is a very liberal description, Taena. I am utterly useless at most physical endeavors."

"You're riding a horse pretty well," Taena remarked. "You didn't disgrace yourself by falling off. But truly, you don't know until you try. We can always find a secluded place to try it, if you'd prefer. One of the smaller courtyards."

"You were riding ahead! I could have fallen and sworn Ser Jaime to secrecy and you would never have known," she teased. "No, I'm not worried about being laughed at. I'm sure some measure of clumsiness is considered acceptable in a young lady of leisure."

"Really? I thought highborn ladies were meant to be all grace and elegance," Taena teased. "Do you not aspire to those things, Visenya?"

"I have more than my share of grace and elegance when it is called for, but can you not imagine a handsome young lordling standing close and showing you the proper way to draw your longbow?" She winked at her cousin. "I am sure he would find it a great pleasure to be able to so instruct a lady."

"Oh yes. I don't know any young men who would be suited to the task, though. Would that I could, then I could ask him to help you. It won't be the same if I try." Taena laughed. "Perhaps Ser Jaime might be worth asking?"
The Red Keep loomed ahead, dominating the view.

"He very well might. I am sure he would acquiesce even if he had no talent in the bow. He seems the type. Is that why you're so eager to pass him on?"

Taena giggled. "Not at all. But he is no good for me, because I cannot marry him, and it's some time ago that we were lovers. But lots of men who like hunting enjoy taking their bows out to shoot game and I seem to recall Ser Jaime mentioning it a time or two."

"I will have to ask him, then."
"So you have no interest in men other than to marry? Never as, well, sport? There is a wide chasm between being the Whore of Blackhaven and enjoying a man in your bed." Visenya spoke as a woman of experience when in truth she was almost a maid.

"Oh, yes, that's very true," Taena agreed. "Ser Jaime is not the only man I've had in my bed, but I would like to have a husband one day. If I can find one willing to take on a bastard. I don't want to move from lover to lover every few weeks. That sounds...unsatisfying. I'd love to have someone who cares about me and perhaps even my own household, if I'm lucky. I thought most women want that. Don't you?"

"I do," she admitted. "There is something about ones love being returned..." She sighed heavily. "Yes, everyone does. I am sure someone will fall deeply in love with you one day soon, Taena. They won't be able to help themselves, bastard or not. You're very pretty, and good to talk to. Isn't that what is important?" She knew it wasn't.
"Maybe it will be a rich merchant from Some free city of Essos who cares not for our silly titles."

"Oh, mayhaps. I would so love to live in a marble manse and eat sweets all day long." But then Taena laughed. "I jest, though. I would get bored with a lazy lifestyle. But love...yes, I want that. But I know you will marry before I do. You have the magic name."

She looked away, feeling rather sorry for Taena. Even as a daughter of the great traitor, she was still a targaryen. It was indeed the magic name. "You never know. The King must consent to my marriage and he is not fond of my branch of the family. He May say no out of spite."

"He might. Or worse, compel you to marry you dislike." Taena pulled a face. "We must all do as the king says, Visenya. Are you not frightened of being force into an unwanted marriage?"

"Yes, I am. I fear that the King will take great offense to the marriage I most deeply wish to make." She shrugged. "If there is one thing I have learned, things are what they are unless you have the influence and the patience to change it."

"And we do not. Grandmother might be persuaded to intervene on my behalf, though. What of Lord Darklyn? He has been a friend to your family, I know. Would you aid you in such a matter?"

"I have no idea." She could not help but think she would be forced to comply with whatever the King wished. "I shall have to arrange things as much as I can on my own before anyone involves the King." Even that, she thought, would not be enough.
