He grinned widely at her. "I'd never do anything to mar your beauty, my lady. It will be the merest trickle I promise. Don't worry, I won't make you deliver the final blow if one is needed. I'm not as cruel as that."

"It had better be!" She eyed the backs of the riders before them. "How much riding does it take to run down one little deer? I can't even see it!"

"They have a lot of stamina," Ser Jaime remarked.
Up ahead, they saw the dogs veer off in a new direction in pursuit of their quarry.
"The aim is to wear it down, my lady. Then kill it."

"Thats cruel, don't you think? Riding and riding only to kill something frightened with no chance of fighting back at the end." She was beginning to sour on the hunt. Still, she turned her horse with the rest, or rather, let the mare follow. She realky wasn't a very skilled rider.

"It's no different to how a wolf brings down its own prey," Ser Jaime remarked. "They hunt deer, why shouldn't we? Venison tastes good."
Ahead, Visenya could now see a flash of brown that had to be the deer.

"I know little of wolves, but I suppose even dragons like to play with their food first. I can't help disliking it though." She was silent until she saw a white tail bounding way ahead. "Look! I see it!" The excitement returned a bit with the glimpse of the creature. "We're almost upon it!"

Lord Reyne and his companions hurtled after the deer as the dogs bayed around them, Ser Jaime drew closer to Visenya.
"You don't have to look if you'd rather not. I shan't take it amiss. A gentle heart can never be anything but a virtue if it belongs to a lady."

She reined in her mount some when Ser Jaime brought his closer. "I'd certainly rather not." She thought it was kind of him to draw her away, though if he could see her heart, he would know it was anything but gentle. "Shall we hang back and let the others go ahead to kill it?"

"Yes, let's do that. Nobody will mind, I'm sure. You might even escape the blooding." He winked. "Though will you think it forward of me if I ask a kiss in return for your escape?"

She laughed. "I think it is very bold of you, though I might consent if I can escape the blooding." She grinned at him. "I might."

"It's only a kiss, nothing more." But his eyes roamed over her face and down to her chest indicating that kissing was not all he truly wanted. "In te tales, its always the bold men who wins the fair maid's hand and heart."

"Oh, so you wish to win my hand and my heart?" She laughed and rolled her eyes. "Maybe a kiss wouldn't be so bad, if you are indeed so honourable."

"I cannot refuse such an offer."
Their horses had slowed to a walk. Now he reached out to grab her bridle as he made the horses stop altogether. Then he leaned over and kissed her gently on the lips, though slowly, to see how she responded.

As the other riders rode past and into the distance, Visenya was shocked to have the young knight lean toward her and to feel his lips meet hers. She was simultaneously thrilled and repulsed by his boldness. Still, she found herself kissing him back for what seemed an interminably long time. She pulled away at last. "We...we should rejoin the others."

"Aye. I suppose we should." He smiled at her though he seemed reluctant. "You look like the Maiden herself, my lady. I'd not want to despoil that, even if you wanted me to. Not today." He winked. "But you know, if we go back, you'll have to submit to the blooding."

Visenya raised an eyebrow. "You grow bolder by the moment, ser. I find I'm not afraid of a little blood. You will find that no maid is." She nudged her horse with her knees and hurried off after the others.

"Perhaps you are bolder than I thought you," Ser Jaime called as he urged his horse to keep pace with hers. "You are well named, then."
After a short while they heard the chatter of the hunters.

She laughed. "I was named for a warrior queen, Ser Jaime. I always thought it suited me."
She reined in, getting the hang of horsemanship at least a little, when they came upon the other hunters.

"I should like to see you become a warrior," Ser Jaime observed.
Ahead they saw the hunks of bloody meat being butchered and wrapped while the dogs gorged themselves on offal. Another of the huntsmen was busy handling the pelt.

"Perhaps I already am," she said absently, watching the deer become parts. "They waste no time, do they? I wonder if there will be a feast."

"Perhaps there will be. Even if not, we'll have venison for sure. It's done quickly to stop flies being attracted. Come, my lady, shall we get your ordeal over?"
He dismounted.

"Very well then." She slid down the side of her mare, somewhat less gracefully, and arranged her divided skirts once she had dismounted. She followed Westerling ever nearer to the carcass, smelling the scent of warm blood rising from the corpse.

Most of the other hunters are male, except for Taena, who smiles at her in welcome. Victory lies curled up nearby with something unmentionable and bloody clutched in her jaws.
Lord Reyne steps forward. "Lady Visenya, I hear this is your first hunt. Has Ser Jaime told you about our custom?"

Visenya nodded to Taena, smiling at her in return. She turned her eyes on Reyne. "Yes, he told me. I'm to have the blood of the kill on my face." She glanced back at Jaime. "A barbaric tradition, but I must play the game by the rules, mustn't I?"

"Yes, my lady. You must." He reached his hand into the bits of the carcass that hadn't been butchered yet, until they came out bloody, and wiped both her cheeks with his fingers. She felt the wetness on her skin.
Ser Jaime, grinning, said "You look a proper warrior now, my lady."
