"That's not my fault. I didn't ask to be born poor," Gendry replied with simple logic. "All I want is a warm bed and food."

"And now you are having." Kesi said. "Are you being tired jariri? You will have to share with Rosey tonight though, until I can be sorting a few things out."

"I don't mind. We had to sleep three or four to a bed when I lied in the pot shop. Smaller beds too. And after that I only had a thin blanket when I lived on the street," he said. "I like sharing, long as I like the person I'm sharing with. It's warmer."

"You are not having to worry about being warm now." Kesi said. She stood and went to one of her chests where she had a few shirts. "Here, I am knowing this is being too big for you, but I am needing to wash what you have."

Gendry obediently took off his own clothes and put on the clean shirt. It fell halfway down his legs and the sleeves hang over his hands but it was a finer garment than any he'd ever owned. "It feels soft," he said in wonderment. "Where did it come from? The king?" He was quite sure nobody else could have such fine clothing.

Kesi chuckled, and rolled up the sleeves.
"Why would I be keeping the Kings clothes in my room?" She asked. "Is belonging to me."
She went to the bed and lifted the cover so that he could crawl up into it.
"We will be getting you something proper when I can."

He looked at her with big eyes but climbed into the bed anyway. "Thank you," he said, very sleepily.
It wasn't long before he was asleep.

Kesi tucked the bedding around him, and rechecked Rosey before deciding to find someone to help her, after all she needed a bed and having two orphans in it did make it harder to sleep in.
She made sure the two were definitely asleep before leaving the room and locking the door behind her.

Kesi returned to her rooms, where she set about clearing out the tiny room, hoping that it would be big enough for the two of them.
She settled down in her chair afterwards, after of course checking on them both.

Both children were still asleep, cuddled together in the bed. Gendry seemed well enough despite his small stature and malnutrition but Rosey's breathing was laboured. Kesi knew there was no guarantee of the girl's survival, even with medicine, warmth and good food. Yet both had a little more colour in their cheeks than she recalled from the streets.

Kesi went to Rosey and woke her so that she could give her some more of the warming mix that she had made, knowing that it was good to let the girl sleep but also knew she had to keep waking her too.
"Is all good." She said softly, to make sure that Gendry continued to sleep.

Rosey woke but seemed groggy and she coughed a fair bit before she could swallow the potion. She stammered out thanks before sinking back into the bed.
Gendry stirred but did not wake.

Kesi stroked her hair back from her face, and let her sleep.
She went back to her own chair and sat where she could think of the day that she had had and how she came out of it with two children.
She didnt sleep at all that night.

It was a long night. Rosey woke several times, coughing, and sometimes she woke Gendry as well. And one time it was Gendry who woke them, thrashing and yelling as he suffered a nightmare that made him wake with tears on his cheeks though he was unable to explain it, perhaps through intense fear. But as Gendry drifted off to sleep, Rosey whispered, between coughing fits, that they had experienced terrible cruelties at the hands of a former employer, which had prompted them to flee onto the streets. Kesi realised that Gendry was too traumatised to speak of his experiences and perhaps it would be better to help him forget.

Kesi made Rosey drink again just before the sun had truly risen. She left them again, this time to find them both suitable clothes.

Kesi returned from her trip to the White Tower via the kitchens where she got some soft rolls for the children.
She unlocked the door and entered, hoping that they were still sleeping and not noticed her absence.

After collecting the clothes that she had made for the children, Kesi returned to her rooms.
They had both been wearing her shirts for the last few days, which she found incredably cute but was hardly practical.

Gendry looked at the clothes with suspicious eyes because he'd never worn anything clean before. Rosey, however, was enchanted, and though she was still weak and couldn't get out of bed for long, she stroked the fabrics in wonder.
Gendry was looking much better after only a few days, but he looked up at Kesi in confusion. "These clothes is too fancy for us. Won' they think I stole them?"

Kesi ruffled Gendry's hair, knowing she would have to cut it before long.
"Why would they be thinking that?" She asked. "I told you that you are with me now jariri, nobody will be thinking that you are stealing unless you do, and I am knowing that you will not be because I will be finding out."

"Oh." But he was not convinced. "Won't I look like some lord dressed like that?"
His question was so ridiculous Rosey started to laugh, but it was broken off by a fit of coughing. Afterwards, she said weakly "Don't be silly. Them;'s servant clothes, is all. Lords has bright colours and things."
Gendry looked from his friend to his patroness. "Oh. What do I have to do when I wear them clothes?"

Kesi smiled, and went to the bed to make Rosey drink some more.
"You will both be having to do jobs." She said, "I have asked for you to be finding a job in the kitchens when you are being well enough Rosey. You will be learning some things first though. And Gendry you will be helping me, you have little fingers that can be getting things that I am struggling with. I will be teaching you a little."

Rosey drank when she was told to do so and went quiet, simply nodding to save herself from coughing. But Gendry was livelier. "What kind of things? I never learned no things before."

"What would you be liking to learn?" Kesi asked with a smile. "I was thinking that I can be teaching you both to read and be writing, maybe even be teaching you both my language."

This suggestion was met with some suspicion from both of them. "What's wrong with the Common Tongue?" Gendry asked. "Why'd I need to learn to write? Aint talking good enough?"

"Talking is good enough at times." Kesi answered. "And nothing is being wrong with common tongue else I would not have learnt it. Are you not wanting to speak with me and make me happy?"
"I am wanting you to write because it is bettering both of you. Same as learning a new tongue. If you are being able to read and write then you can get a better job when you are being older, and I have been hearing that all true knights are needing to be able to write and read."
She had heard nothing of the sort but hoped that Gendry wouldnt realise this.
