Background:
Valyria was born in 77 to Adara Dondarrion, a bastard of unknown parenthood, though there were always suspicions that her father was King Maegor II. Nevertheless, she stayed with her mother at the court of King's Landing as a child, though once war broke out was taken to Blackhaven for safety. It was there that she grew up, in the Dornish marches, with a mother she turned away from the moment she was old enough to understand her.
Valyria not so much hated her mother as look down on her for her constant dallying with whomever crossed her path. She was rarely a motherly presence, so it fell to Septas and the Maester of Blackhaven to bring up the young girl and it was no surprise she wanted to be the complete opposite of her mother. At an early age she learned how to ride and would often ride out into the wilderness around the Boneway, accompanied by a party of guards of course. When she could, she joined the scouts and foragers employed at Blackhaven to go hunting with them. She learned how to track, conceal her own movements and generally remain hidden in an open environment. At age ten she was allowed to visit Mistwood, where her experiences in the wild branched out to forest related activities.
She learned how to shoot a bow and quickly showed some skill with the weapon, shooting at practice targets daily and joining the hunt whenever she could. As a bastard she wasn't really looked down on for joining the more manly activities and at this time it wasn't obvious yet that she would grow up to be a beauty. It was in Mistwood that Valyria first came into contact with battle, when the band of hunters she was with stumbled upon a group of bandits. Still a child, Valyria was forced to hide while the hunters descended down on the bandits and were subsequently slaughtered. Trapped alone in the Rainwood, Valyria decided to act; she tracked the bandits to their hideout before making her way back to safety at Mistwood, informing the lord there of the bandit's lair. She was soon heralded as somewhat of a hero for this act and when she returned to Blackhaven she was in possession of a finely made yew bow.
It was upon that return to Blackhaven that Valyria heard of an awful ambush that had happened in the marches, a dragon burning down countless soldiers as well as Lord Baratheon himself. The young girl was furious at such unfairness and swore (to everyone at Blackhaven's amusement) that she would make herself an enemy of all dornishmen and dragons. She started to beg for martial training and was denied, and at age twelve ran away for the first time, making it as far as the boarder of Wyl before being tracked down. Her insistence and escapades became more fervent until eventually the master of arms acquiesced and allowed Valyria to gain training at arms.
Showing up the first day in the yard, Valyria immediately insisted that she would not use a sword but a spear instead. When asked why, she said that she wanted to fight the dornish with their own weapons. Amused, the master at arms began her training, teaching the young girl everything she needed to know about combat with a spear. The first thing was making her run carrying rocks; swimming followed and climbing, as well as monthly treks to other castles. Every morning she would get up to pursue physical activities and it wasn't until evening that she would return to the castle, eating a quick meal before falling asleep, often before reaching her bed. Next she was instructed how to dance in a dornish fashion, something Valyria hated more than most other things. The master at arms however insisted it was necessary; if she wished to know how the dornish fought then she would need to know how they moved. Valyria agreed and took to her dancing lessons with grace, though she found some of the moves far too reminiscent of the sordid life her mother lived. Only when Valyria began to show promise in all of these activities was she allowed to learn how to handle a spear.
And learn she did, swiftly picking up the grace and swift movement that was necessary to wield such a weapon. She already had precision from her training with the bow and it soon became obvious that Valyria would be highly competent with a spear. Perhaps it was her skill, or perhaps it was the fact that she was slowly growing into a beautiful young woman, but the yard of Blackhaven was often full of admirers when she practiced. Guards would shout encouragement and servants their admiration, and it was only the harsh barking of the master of arms that could disperse them.
Valyria was sixteen when she was first allowed to be part of a scouting party that ventured into Dorne. They rode south-west of Blackhaven, making their way towards Vulture's Roost. For a few days they remained undetected, but late on the fourth day a dornish scouting party noticed them. The leader of the Stormlanders immediately ordered a retreat back to Blackhaven but found himself contested by Valyria. She told them that they would not be able to escape from the men riding sandsteeds, but also convinced him that Stormlanders do not run from dornish snakes. And so they quickly turned, mounts hurtling towards their oncoming enemy.
Valyria took down one man with her bow, before leveling her spear at another and gutting him in his saddle. The fight swiftly moved to foot and her harsh training paid off. When the fight was over the Stormland party had only lost two men, while Valyria herself had slain six dornishmen. The party returned to Blackhaven to cheers and soon Valyria was allowed to go on more scouting and ambush raids into the marches, proving her worth every time. Sometimes she would be part of a group that scouted out locations or hunted down dornishmen. More often she went out by herself to track down and kill small parties of the dreaded enemy, poison a dornish well or just to see how far into Dorne she could get without being detected. The lands surrounding Hellholt was the answer to that.
It was at only nineteen years of age when Valyria made a real name for herself in the Stormlands. She had been scouting along the Prince's Pass and was heading for Nightsong when a dornish ambush was sprung on her. Valyria's mount was feathered with arrows and she took a shaft in the back before her enemies descended on her. Her life flashed before her eyes but somehow she managed to grab her spear, fighting with a fury that she hadn't known before. When the fight was over, Valyria lay in the pass with a wound to her back, leg, shoulder and head, a circle of dead Dornishmen around her. She was found by Caron men and brought to safety at Nightsong, where she was confined to a bed for a month. Soon however she was back in the marches, more wary and careful now, having lost the dangerous fearlessness she had had before.
In the last two years Valyria has spent most of her time in the marches, though she has also ventured to several Stormland and Reach castles such as Nightsong, Crow's Nest, Griffin's Roost, Wyl, Yronwood, Horn Hill and Uplands to impart her knowledge of tracking and fighting on those willing to listen. She has gained notoriety of sorts, known for her ability to remain undetected in the wild and her skill with the spear. Every year since the age of sixteen she has walked what she calls the Snake, a trek that goes along the marches from Sun House to Bronzegate. As for personal relationships, Valyria has friends among the smallfolk throughout the marches and nearby areas as well as being close to a few of the Stormland knights. She has been with a few men over the years, though has never lain with anyone outside of a romantic context. Nevertheless, she is loathe to become romantically involved too quickly through fear of becoming like her mother.
And yet despite her enmity towards them, Valyria harbours the blood of dragons, the heritage of Valyria and the ability to tame and ride a dragon, should she ever wish to.
Personality:
Valyria can be both firey and calm, depending on the situation, and to those she knows she is kind and forthcoming. She is unfamiliar with court life, having spent most of her time in the wild, and so may appear a little stand-offish in noble company.
In a fight Valyria is fast and professional, her relative shortness giving her a lower center of gravity, making her more balanced and quicker than her opponents. She aims to end a fight as quickly as she can, not letting her opponent get the upper hand.
Appearance:
It is not a lie that Valyria inherited good looks from her mother. She has black hair and teasing purple eyes, her face pristinely beautiful when kept clean from sand and dirt of the road. She has full lips and her skin is slightly tanned from the constant sun. A little plump as a child, Valyria's physique is slim and athletic with some natural curves, and she stands at about 5'5". Those who accompany her like to ride behind her, for a better view.
When on the road, Valyria wears riding leathers and breeches, her well-oiled black chainmail always ready to be donned for battle. Rarely can she be seen in a dress, though when she does wear one for important occasions she looks as graceful as any lady.
