The guards looked at her in confusion. They had never seen this woman before. Thy whispered together before one asked "King Maekar? So it's true, and the bastard is king, then? But what happened to Prince Aegon, who was heir? Is he dead?"

"Lord Tyrell isn't in the audience chamber at this time of day, m'lady," the guard replied. One of the others started to ask what was wrong with a man being a bastard, but quickly shut up under the cold stare of his superior.

"As you wish. I'll send one of the lads to escort you, and have another fetch Lord Tyrell," the senior guard replied. He eyed the dragon rather warily. "Does your beast require anything?"

The audience chamber looked rather sad and empty when Vira arrived. There was nobody present and the furnishings were old and minimal. Even the high seat of House Gardener, where the Lord of Highgarden still sat, looked careworn and in need of a good polish. Her companion said "I met Ser Maekar once, I think, though he'd not remember me. It is the same Ser Maekar that's king now, ain't it?"

The man looked at her in horror. "M'lady, you can't sit there! That's Lord Tyrell's seat! He'll not be best pleased. Look, we've cushioned chairs you could use. I could put one on the dais for you?"

The guard looked somewhat worried but he went to fetch the lemon water as she wished. Lord Tyrell arrives presently, looking rather troubled and sick at heart. "Lady...Vira, I believe?" He looks at her in surprise, particularly because she is sitting in his chair.

Lord Tyrell looks every bit as tired and worn as his castle but his tone is stern. "My lady, I am rather puzzled. Highgarden has made no promises in regard of House Blackwood. You are a stranger to me. I owe you nothing beyond the courtesy I would show all visitors. As for King Maegor, I had heard that he was dead.. Maekar I know, but he has a trueborn brother, Aegon Targaryen, who was destined to sit the Iron Throne in his father's place."

Lord Tyrell sighed. "King Maegor made no particular proclamations regarding his heir in his own lifetime, my lady, as you surely know. And you must also be aware that, regardless of my obligations to the crown, I owe no fealty to yourself. I know also that King Maegor had only two trueborn sisters, and their names were Queen Rhaella and Princess Arenya." His expression hardened. "I have heard tell of no Princess Vira. That leads me to conclude that you are bastard born. Maekar must know that a vow of fealty sworn to his bastard aunt is meaningless. A lord swears only to his king, and in person."

"And yet, how do I know that you are truly working for King Maekar?" Lord Tyrell replied. "Have you proof, my lady? Have you even proof that he was King Maegor's chosen heir? I am sorry. but I know little of you, and that concerns me. It is certainly true that Maegor loved his firstborn well, but I have not heard that Aegon was disinherited. And i am afraid that I received the letter from Kings Landing only a few days ago. With the realm so recently free from war, I have not been able to leave Highgarden as yett."

Lord Tyrell looked over the letters for a long time before he stood and faced her. "Perhaps King Maekar is willing to allow you to act as his proxy. I, however, am not willing to swear an oath to a bastard. I will swear fealty to him in person, or not at all. " He paused a moment to take a breath. "If King Maekar truly desires my loyalty, he will recall that there is another who would claim his throne, and yet I have received no assurances that he will protect Highgarden and the Reach should Aegon offer us harm."

Lord Tyrell frowned. He misliked being reminded how fealty worked by an upjumped peasant. "He does not, and yet it took many years before the Reach was free. We are still rebuilding the homes we have lost, and sowing crops for the future. Oaths of fealty aside, I simply cannot commit men to King Maekar's cause. I need all the men I have to protect my own lands."

"From anyone, especially with war coming. I just cannot spare men to fight right now. House Tyrell, Highgarden and the Reach are all that matter to me, right now," Lord Tyrell admitted. "I must protect my own lands and people."

Lord Tyrell frowned. "My lady, I have not refused. I have simply said that I do not believe in swearing fealty to anyone beside the king himself. Furthermore. I cannot be spared to attend the court in Kings Landing at present. My first duty is to my own people, as I have stated. I am sorry that you disagree."

Lord Tyrell stood. "My lady, I have told you that I cannot be spared to attend the court. I must rebuild my own lands. I have nothing to offer King Maekar while my fortunes remain so dire. If you will not accept that, I would be obliged if you would leave."
