Maekar comes to visit Vira in the middle of the night, two days after seizing his crown. He does his best to conceal the fact that the King is visiting a prisoner in her chambers, wearing a heavy black cloak and ordering Ser Jon Gaunt to remain outside the King's chambers as if he was still inside. Ideally, he'll be able to see Vira without the entire castle talking about it.

Maekar enters her chambers, and when the guardsmen in the antechamber realize who he is they snap to attention, though he waves them aside and proceeds into Vira's darkened room.

Vira had been dozing lightly, but came alert at the sound of footsteps. Her guards were posted outside during the night instead of in her antechamber. "Who is there?" Vira asked, striking a match to light a candle. She was wearing a white cotton bedgown, her dark hair tumbling loose down her back.

"It is I, love," Maekar said, drawing back his hood and moving to sit on the bed beside her. He took her hand gently; it had been nearly three weeks since they had even spoken or seen each other, let alone touched. "I am sorry."

Vira felt her heart leap as Maekar's face flickered in the candle light. Though it had not even been a full month since they had last seen each other, so much had happened since then at Vira felt relief and love wash over her at the sight of him. "Maekar!" she whispered in delight, and she threw herself into his arms, kissing him. "I have missed you so much."

He cradled her tightly in his lap, his arms wrapped around her body as he returned her kiss. "I cannot release you from here, not until I can make Ser Symon admit to being complicit in Delinaal's plot with the witch," he replied softly. "The other three escaped, but Buckler was caught before he made it to the docks. They have him in the cells but so far he has resisted confessing to the crime. Once he breaks, I'll have him confess publicly," Maekar said, brushing his fingers gently across the trading bruise on Vira's cheek. "Then I will be able to order your release, and you can do what you like with him, as repayment for this."

Vira nestled close in his lap as he spoke. Her eyes glinted. "I knew you wouldn't let all of them escape! I will certainly make him pay for this." She covered Maekar's hand with her own. "If my birds were not so occupied hunting that bastard Delinaal and his witch and all the rest, I would send them to hunt for Ser Moryn, my dear. Let us wait until my birds return with news and then I will send them hunting again."
She smiled and rested her head on his shoulder, curling up in his lap. "I heard that Cyrax bit Amethyst's head clean off, and that bitch Rhaella fell to her death," she murmured. "It made me so happy. I wish I could have seen the sight when you took the Iron Throne."

"He did, and she did," Maekar replied, leaning his cheek against her head as she lay in the curve of his shoulder. He told her about his meetings with Lords Stark, Lannister, Tully, and Redwyne, as well as his meeting with Lady Lannister.
"I think she was somewhat taken with me, to tell it truly," he said with a chuckle, shifting his arms around Vira so that he could lay his palm against her swollen belly. "You should know, love, that if you birth a daughter she must be betrothed to Lord Baratheon's heir, though it will be ten years before she will go to Storm's End to become a bride."

Vira listened thoughtfully as he told her about his meetings with the lords, and the formidable Tysha Lannister. They would discuss those meeting later and how Maekar should handle them. There was a more exciting thought on her mind for now.
"If I have a daughter and she must be Borros' good-daughter, then I will accept that gladly," Vira replied, kissing Maekar deeply, sliding her tongue into his mouth. "Just now I am more excited about becoming a bride myself." In her happiness, Vira envisioned herself as Maekar's queen, a wedding that would happen as soon as she was set free.

Maekar returned her kiss with passion, but drew back after a moment, recognizing her expression when she mentioned her own wedding. "Ser Axell will disavow your marriage, I am sure, unconsummated as it was," he replied slowly.
"But when you marry again it cannot be to me. You do realize that, do you not, love?" he asked.

Vira was disquieted by these words. Hadn't he told her, when they were in Bronzegate together, that he would make her one of his wives? What had taken hold of him now? Vira decided that he was stressed out by his precarious position and that she would not press the matter for the time being. Besides, it would be a lot more fun to persuade him.
"I don't realize that at all," she said, kissing him teasingly. "Ever since we began plotting this, I have imagined taking my king in my mouth while he sits the Iron Throne, in the dead of the night when the throne room is deserted. It's the only place fit for a queen to go down on her knees."

Vira could feel him stirring beneath her, from her curled up position on his lap, though is arms wrapped around her were rigid and she could see that his expression was disquieted. He had never heard anything that enflamed his blood on more than what she had just proposed but when she referred to herself as his queen, he knew that this conversation would soon head in an unpleasant direction. "I do not think I should be able to sit still under your ministrations, and if I moved in the wrong way I would likely impale myself on the throne," he replied with a weak laugh.
He cupped Vira's chin in gentle fingers and drew apart from her for a moment, meeting her eyes carefully. "I cannot marry you, my love. I cannot make you my Queen, as much as my heart longs for it to be so," he said. "You know why it cannot be, love," he added, though his voice cracked slightly at the end.

For a moment she was shocked, and felt a sense of betrayal as he looked into her eyes. This is why you always protected yourself against trusting a man, all her old instincts told her, but Vira forced those old, suspicious feelings down. She could not help but see the love in his eyes, and as she began to listen to her reason rather than her heart, she understood why. Maekar needed his political marriage to Visenya, if they had any hope of winning the lords paramount to their side instead of Aegon and Rhaena's. How offended would the Starks, Tyrells, Lannisters and Baratheons of the world be if they were told to bend the knee to a peasant? And they'll call you a whore. A peasant whore, who may have killed Maegor. She had to accept it.
"I - I understand," she said quietly, forcing herself to take Maekar's hand and squeeze it. "Yes, I do really understand. Our position is so precarious, once false move is all Aegon needs from you. And that would be marriage to me." She sighed, twining her fingers with his. "If a political marriage to Visenya is what we need, then it is what we need."

"We had our chance to fly from Westeros together, but we chose another path. Kings have a responsibility to make a marriage that betters their Kingdom; I could even do far better than Visenya, but the Andals are somewhat hypocritical when it comes to putting aside wives. I would disavow my marriage to Visenya to wed a woman that brought be a dowry and an army, but I suspect it would go over well, even if I did wait until the child was born," Maekar said dryly.
He took Vira's hand carefully, and slid his fingers in between hers. "I no longer have the luxury of choosing with my heart. You are still the blood of the dragon, and when your marriage to Ser Axell is broken, it was my thought to offer your hand to Lord Stark, once the child has been born. He has a young son, but I mean to make him the Hand of the King, and the Lady of Winterfell is not so far from a Queen if you think about it."

"Stark?" she said in dismay. "That is so very far away, Maekar. All the way up in the north. I had hoped I could - we could - see each other...even if we could not be married."

"The Hand will live in the capital, to perform his duties," Maekar said in a low voice that caught in his throat. "I could not dishonor my own Hand by sleeping with his wife. We would not… be able to continue, though we certainly would see each other. Lord Stark is a good man, and I need his support if I am to win this throne; I cannot risk that by giving him horns here of all places. Everyone at court would know in a fortnight, no matter how discrete we were."

"I see." She pulled away from him, and began to pace the room. It's just duty, she kept telling herself, but her heart ached. You KNOW he doesn't love Visenya, she thought.
"I cannot pretend this doesn't pain me," she said softly. "But so long as I know I have your heart, I can bear with it...for now."

Maekar did not move from his seat on her bed, and he held out his hand to her. He wanted to offer to fly from Westeros with her at that very moment, but having worn the crown he knew he could not give it up; it was far too late for them to simply flee together. "You will always have my heart, and though I may not be able to have you, I will see that neither you nor our child want for anything ever again," he said steadily. He seemed calm, almost inscrutable, but Vira could see small cracks in the facade of his king's mask, and knew that Maekar was in as much pain as she was.

Seeing his face brought a fresh wave of pain. Vira took his hand, and kissed it.
"Before I met you, all I wanted was power," she said, fighting back her tears. She fought to keep her voice steady. "Ambition was all that I had. That, and a pretty face. If someone had told me then that I would one day get a dragon, a king's bastard in my belly, two noble husbands with the latter being one if the greatest lords if the realm, and then become wife of the Hand of the King, I would have leaped at the chance. If someone had warned me I would have to give up my true live for it, I would have laughed at them and retorted that I don't need true love."
Vira cupped his cheek with a trembling hand as she stood over him, where he sat on the bed. "But now I almost wish we had just flown away together. It would've been so perfect, just you and me and our baby."

"It is too late for that now," Maekar replied, pulling her toward him and kissing her belly gently. "Far too late. You will be happy with your husband; Aegerys will afford you more freedom than most wives could dream of, and perhaps the children you bear him may one day inherit Wintefell itself. I will see that our child is landed, and that he or she marries well," he said kissing her again. "You have my word that it will be so."

"Oh, don't speak of Winterfell," she begged, gently lowering herself into his lap and kissing him once more. "Be with me tonight. Let us have each other to ourselves, before your stupid crown pulls us apart."

Maekar sat there in silence for a long time, just holding her in his arms. "I cannot stay long. Dawn is not far off, and I will be missed if I do not return soon; until I draw a confession from the Kingsguard, I cannot be seen visiting you, my love," he said.

He could not be refusing her, could he? It was an unthinkable thought. "The spend the last hours before dawn in my bed," she whispered, kissing him and gently pushing him down onto the featherbed.

"Stop," Maekar said, taking her hands in his as she pushed him backward. He was fighting with his own urges, and Vira could tell that he wanted her after so many weeks apart; his body was sending messages contrary to the words coming out of his mouth. "We cannot. My love, Stop!" he said firmly, as she ignored his protests.
"You and I are accused, if not outright, of regicide," he hissed. "I cannot be seen or heard in your bed, and if I cannot find a way to extricate you from this accusation, we will both of us die screaming in the Black Cells. Of that you can be sure, and I have no intention of allowing that to happen."
Maekar stared at her, forcing Vira to meet his gaze, and she saw a change in his eye. He was the same man who had laid languidly with her in the Kingswood, laughing and fucking without a care; the same man who had given her his heart and soul, and yet... something was different.

Vira's confusion and slight anger at being refused, despite feeling how hard he was beneath her, melted away as he spoke. She could not deny the wisdom in his words, as much as she hated it. Vira never felt as safe and secure as she did in Maekar's arms, and she wanted to be with him now more than ever, after all that had happened. But he was right. And she could not believe he had been the one to keep a clear head and remember this, instead of her. It was disquieting to remember how very dangerous their situation was, and hearing him say it chilled her. He had truly grown up, she realized. The crown had already changed him. And she admired him for it as much as it made her feel as if duty and politics were once again pulling him farther and farther away from her.
"You're right," she said softly and reluctantly, touching his cheek. "I will not jeopardize us further, my sweetling. But I shall miss you tonight. Will duty always lay between us now?"
